What should I add to my '90s website?

So I'm currently toying around with NeoCities, and decided to trial it by building your classic mid '90s Geocities/Tripod/Angelfire pastiche website.

Some of the most important elements are already in place.

Tile background? Large font? Heading in bright pink with a shadow? Unusual colour choices? Random cat gifs? Under construction gif? Check! Check! Check!

In the true spirit of the '90s DIY web, some more pages (including the links page) are coming soon.

(I'm thinking of adding a page dedicated to either Britney or a nu-metal band.)

You can see the page so far here: https://that90ssite.neocities.org/

There are a few things that I want to add to make it complete, and I'm looking for suggestions.

The first, is to embed a midi file that plays automatically. Any suggestions on the best way of doing this?

Second, it's just not going to be complete without a guestbook.

Third, any webring suggestions?

Fourth, what's the best way of adding a java chat room in 2024?

Finally, anything else that really needs to be a part of a great '90s website?

UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! I've added more annoying GIFs, a guestbook, a links page, and a cyber cat hangout.

UPDATE 2: And added even more gifs, an amazing Amiga demo, and a ton of links.

@ajsadauskas @asklemmy (Trying to remember my own GeoCities site from back then), Many had a “best viewed on Netscape” icon

I think mine had mostly my own song lyrics, with a different background for each page, with a menu page and forward/back links on each lyrics page.

Were frames 90s? Friend of mine used frames to make his site look like a console from Star Trek TNG

Interesting, the alcohol content in the hard cider served at La Crêperie de Paris at Epcot is only 3%. Going to brew up a batch of some kind of hard cider here today, probably, and all the recipes seem to be double that. #alcohol #brewing #homebrew

@ai6yr

I know I’m going on and on, but one thing about sweetening the cider is that unless you know that all the yeast are gone, adding sugar will restart fermentation. If you want sweet, you may need to add potassium metabisulfite to prevent refermentation.

@ai6yr

(I was a homebrewer for many years. Compared to brewing cider is pretty straightforward)

@ai6yr

At this point you have a dry cider you can keg or bottle in sanitized vessels. If desired, you can transfer off the yeast and flavor by adding hops or herbs or other things. I did lavender once and it was amazing!

@scrummy@jawns.club avatar

@ai6yr I realize it’s not the right season, but here’s what I did:

Sanitize equipment. (Not sterilized. A weak bleach solution works, but there are commercial products as well)

Buy cold pasteurized cider (a fall thing normally)

Put in fermentation vessel, add yeast and wait a week or so for fermentation to complete.

@ai6yr

Additional sugars (like honey) will increase the alcohol content, and may add flavor depending on the sugar.

If you want fizzy add sugar at bottling or kegging.

I’ve never had an explosion. Just make sure all the equipment is clean and sanitized.

Second Saturday spin. “The Photo Album” by Death Cab for Cutie. So far I’m two tracks in and it’s classic chill Death Cab. First time I had heard of the band was when they appeared on The Colbert Report around the time “Narrow Stairs” came out.

Replacing the 40+ year old needle on my turntable. I think the old one had issues!

Chuck Mangione “Children of Sanchez”

Another from the parental stash. I’m very familiar with “Feels So Good,” which was played a lot when I grew up. This one I don’t really remember, but I’m digging the Latin jazz vibes.

A blast from 1982, Pac Man Fever. This is one of the first records I asked my parents to buy when I was a kid.

Lots of video game sounds on the tracks. Featuring Pac Man, Frogger, Centipede, Donkey Kong and more.

Genesis “Invisible Touch” I had bought this on cassette back in 1987 and proceeded to play it so much I wore the tape out.

Interestingly, the hand on the album cover is textured by the black ink. Never knew that!

Paul Simon “Graceland”. From my parents collection. I remember my dad putting this on for dinner and my mom complaining that this was not dinner music! 😂

When I was in high school the marching band also did a version of this during football games.

A 60s recording of Rossini’s overtures performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. A lot of these were used in cartoons.

Just the William Tell Overture had 3 familiar sections!

Ray Charles, “Ray Charles Invites You to Listen”. Another from the parents collection. This record is full of slow jazz ballads and some pop covers in a very crooner style. Very much the kind of music my mom loved.

Chicago IX Greatest Hits from 1975. I originally had a copy of this recorded on cassette back in the 80s from a friend of mine.

As I’ve been going through my parents records from the 70s this is not one of them, but I’d like to think that it’d fit in with their tastes.
