🗺️ Day 1️⃣4️⃣: 🌍

For today’s theme, here are the locations with photos of all known and extant (aka commemorative plaques) found in Europe that were created by the National Historical Commission of the (). It turns out that these are all related to our national hero José Rizal since he traveled extensively in Europe.

(I was fortunate enough to visit the 2 markers in Germany and would love to visit the rest!)

🗺️ Day 1️⃣3️⃣:

(Finally caught up!)

For today, I wanted to do something simple and whimsical.

There’s a lot of rumblings online because Taylor Swift’s wildly successful The Eras Tour is not coming to this or that country. So while I’m not a Swiftie, here’s a map (in my favorite projection) showing which 20 countries currently have tour dates. As you can expect, the usual countries are there and Africa is noticeably absent.

🗺️ Day 1️⃣2️⃣: 🌎

(Sorry for the belated post. 😝)

This is a map of the locations of the four facilities of the European Southern Observatory in northern 🇨🇱. South America’s unique geography sees it being rarely visited by tropical cyclones and the central Andes is also an effective rain shield making Chile’s Desert 🏜️ the driest hot place on Earth. This area is thus an ideal location to host telescopes due to its clear weather. ☀️

#30DayMapChallenge 🗺️ Day 1️⃣1️⃣: Retro

This post is kinda late. 😝 Anyway, I had some #JavaScript code from several years back that lets me render a faux portolan chart as an SVG image in the browser given a GeoJSON data of coastlines. So for today I tried to resurrect this idea and chose to render a map of #SaintKittsAndNevis 🇰🇳. After drawing the basic elements, I then went into #GIMP to add labels and finishing touches.

Data is of course from #OpenStreetMap (licensed under the ODbL 1.0).

🗺️ Day 🔟: 🌎

I’ve been racking my brain to come up with a map for day 10 and then I stumbled on the fact that North America has a notable number of large lakes compared to the other continents.¹ So inspired by the 100 largest islands poster² that my friend David Garcia created, I did one with the largest 15 lakes of the continent.

Data from the 1:10m Natural Earth lakes.³

Here is a stylized map of the former #Berlin #TegelAirport (#TXL), famous for its hexagonal architecture. This airport had been Berlin’s main airport until it was replaced by the new (and long overdue) Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER). Coincidentally, TXL had its last commercial flight on 8 November 2020, almost exactly 3 years ago. The site was then repurposed as the Urban Tech Republic, a tech hub and startup incubator: https://urbantechrepublic.de

Today marks the 10th anniversary of the landfall of 🌀, also known as , in the 🇵🇭. This devastating event had a lasting impact in my country and is still the deadliest typhoon in the 21st century having killed over 6300 people.

For the Philippines community in particular, the typhoon radically transformed what it means to volunteer our time, effort, and resources to map and provide freely accessible geographic data.

🗺️ Day 8️⃣: 🌍

I decided to try something new and create my very first map! The two variables I’ve mapped for 52 African countries are the 2023 scores by and the 2022 by the UN Development Programme.

Unfortunately São Tomé and Príncipe didn’t have a WPFI score while there’s no HDI for Somalia. Of course Western Sahara had no data too.

🗺️ Day 7️⃣:

Decided to do something “simple” for today. Here is a map of all ferry routes ⛴️ in the 🇵🇭 that have been mapped in . Data has been extracted via (data licensed under ODbL 1.0) and rendered via .

Since the Philippines is an archipelago, ferries and boats are important means of transportation especially since the thousands of small islands are too small to host airstrips.

This map shows where the many of the world’s centi-millionaires live in 🌏. Centi-millionaires, according to Henley & Partners, are “individuals with investable wealth of USD 100 million or more”: https://www.henleyglobal.com/publications/centi-millionaire-report-2023

The map only shows the 17 Asian cities among the top 50 cities in the world that have the most number of resident centi-millionaires. (Certainly, other such high net-worth individuals live elsewhere but not in the top 50.)

#30DayMapChallenge 🗺️ Day 5️⃣: Analog map

OK, this was way more fun than I expected! 😝

I decided to try and recreate the shapes of 12 countries using the 4 pieces of the classic T puzzle: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T_puzzle

See if you can identify which countries are which! This is a thread of 3 toots each with 4 countries.

Spoiler: Don't read other people's replies!

(Sadly, I had to omit the alt text for these photos for obvious reasons.)

Edit: Added 4 more countries! 🎉

#30DayMapChallenge 🗺️ Day 4️⃣: A bad map

Here’s a map of all 4400 #Catholic churches ✝️⛪ in the #Philippines 🇵🇭 that are currently mapped in #OpenStreetMap (licensed ODbL 1.0).

Data extracted via #OverpassTurbo and plotted using geojson.io to add some styling.

(The map is so bad that I got the “This page is slowing down Firefox. To speed up your browser, stop this page.” message. This is why you use marker clustering, or a GIS tool more suited to the job such as #QGIS or something like @felt.)

🗺️ Day 3️⃣: Polygons

Here are the world’s time zones rendered in my favorite projection. Each zone is colored based on its offset from UTC mapped to the color spectrum 🌈. If a region observes daylight saving, the color is based on the average of the summer and winter time.

This is inspired by a similar map created by Emīls Rode and Oskars Weilands for the Dymax Redux competition organized by the Buckminster Fuller Institute in 2013: https://mapsontheweb.zoom-maps.com/post/134062804597/timezones-by-emils-rode-and-oskars-weilands-one

Here we have the baselines of the 🇵🇭 and from there the maximum territorial sea 12 nautical miles (nmi) from the baselines, contiguous zone (24 nmi), and the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) (200 nmi), per . These zones are drawn ignoring neighboring countries.

Also shown is the agreed EEZ boundary with 🇮🇩, and the extended continental shelf (ECS) for the Benham Rise.

#30DayMapChallenge 🗺️ Day 1️⃣: Points

I will probably regret joining this map challenge but let’s try doing this for the first time!

https://30daymapchallenge.com/

This map visualizes the 7100 islands 🏝️ of the Philippines that were catalogued by the United States and published in Volume 5 of the 1939 Census of the Philippines.

We suspected that this was the original source for the official number of 7107 islands before 2016 when 500+ more islands were identified by NAMRIA.
