The more I'm thinking about it, the more I consider it.

I want to add a map for my bicycle rides, but I can't find any good PHP maps. The PHP versions of Leaflet on GitHub are no good. They don't work at all. They just gives you errors like "can't load class" or something like that.

So even if I am against it only to challenge myself, I consider using Leaflet in JS for airikr.me/biking.

Or do you have any solution in PHP that works out of the box?

Got data surfing?

Here is a video I made showing how to use the web map GISsurfer (I am dev) to split your screen and ‘surf’ data on any ArcGIS server with a public table of contents.

https://youtu.be/IW818LwkBlY

Drill down to a layer on the left side of the screen, click the layer and that data appears on the map on the right side of your screen. You might need to zoom in/out since some data only appears at certain zoom levels.

The video also shows how to make a GISsurfer link to automatically display the layers you have turned on.

For 3,000+ ArcGIS server addresses (USA) see this PDF I curate:

The GeoJPG web app version 2 is ready for use. 🥳 🎉 🍻 📣 You can view your own custom maps offline on both iOS and Android devices with NO ads, NO tracking, NO signup and NO fees.

I developed the GeoJPG web app as a public service and part of my way to ‘pay it forward’. This is not a commercial product of any nature. I am making this freely available simply because I can.

GeoJPG is not available in any app store. To install it for offline use, open the web app link, tap “Yes” and then carefully follow the instructions you will see.

Website: https://geojpg.com

Web App: https://geojpg.com/geojpg.html

Short 🧵 with version 2 screenshots. Launch data March 19 (or sooner).

Your own custom high quality offline maps for iOS and Android with NO ads, NO tracking, No signup and NO cost.

Step 1: Use GISsurfer screenshot mode to make georeferenced JPG screenshots of almost anything GISsurfer can display.

Step 2: Upload the JPGs to Google Drive.

Step 3: View the JPG maps offline with the GeoJPG ‘web app’.

Left screenshot shows Menu items available offline.
Right screenshot shows additional (blue) Menu items available when online.

Time for a 🛌

GeoJPG v2 launch on target for March 19 - maybe sooner.

Make your own custom maps, host them for free on Google Drive, view them offline and see your geolocation.

No ads. No tracking. No signup. No cost.

I am developing this as a public service and part of my way to "pay it forward". Plus I am having a blast doing this since - to the best of my knowledge - this is a new approach to offline maps.

Despite my recent absolute failure with , here we go again:

Dear toot-pals, where can I find wholesome learning materials on and/or / / in ?

I've been playing with via , which is awesome , but I struggle with simple stuff like adding a bunch of places as markers. Everything looks a bit like the owl drawing meme, either showing something too easy and useless, or something too advanced and also useless or beyond my comprehension. Maybe some other Python tools?
(I know about Marcelo's fabulous PrettyMaps but it is not exactly a viz tool)

@slackline@mastodon.social avatar

@villares I've found Leaflet to be a really easy way to work with maps in Python.

The Python package to use for this is called Folium

A useful tutorial to get you started is

@villares I have used before and it is pretty easy to have a map running with custom markers. I didn't do anything big, but for smaller maps (maybe bigger ones too), it is a great suggestion from @slackline

Decided to do something “simple” for today. Here is a map of all ferry routes ⛴️ in the 🇵🇭 that have been mapped in . Data has been extracted via (data licensed under ODbL 1.0) and rendered via .

Since the Philippines is an archipelago, ferries and boats are important means of transportation especially since the thousands of small islands are too small to host airstrips.

This may be totally lost in the posit conf noise, but I really love the package. It scratches that "looks impressive but is actually really easy" itch. I was thinking of writing up a few tips and tricks that I've learned using it over the past few years, starting with de-emphasising areas outside of a region of interest. Give it a read if you're interested! https://jack-davison.github.io/posts/2023-09-16-ILL-ShadeOut/

One of my colleagues just completed an insane web map that displays every single NOAA Airborne Gamma Snow Survey since 1981. This historical map summarizes all our efforts to measure snow water equivalent across CONUS and Alaska. It's possibly one of the coolest hidden gems in all of NOAA's science program. We convert the attenuation of naturally occurring gamma radiation into soil moisture and snow water equivalent. Map can be browsed here: https://www.nohrsc.noaa.gov/special/leaflet/2024/SWE_History/

And yet, I see companies using the images to attract attention
Can't blame them, they look pretty as the one I made in and in a few lines and minutes
