it might not be apparent from the posts here, but was a blast of inspiring presentations and lively conversations! thank you, Uta, Ben and the whole @InfoPlusConf team for making us feel so welcome in Edinburgh!

not sure if i am getting too old for live-posting or if it was the jam-packed program (probably both), but there was a lot of good things to take in: from workshops and presentations to the exhibition and socials…

@nrchtct

Interesting summary, thank you Marian!

What do you mean by "formerly excluded people" in your first point?

seblammers,

@nrchtct

Thanks for elaborating. That's a great trend. Makes me smile and love this community even more :)

Inter version 4.0 → https://rsms.me/inter/

After two years of work on a new version of Inter, I'm so proud that it's finally released. (It's been in beta for the past year)

The changes are vast. Most notably there are six additional "Display" designs for large delicious type

@rsms

Thank you for allllllllll the effort!

Inter was always a milestone and it continues to be :)

Only now I realize that I can’t repost something and add a comment here. Why? It seems so limiting! Did I miss something?

seblammers,
@seblammers@vis.social avatar

Edit: I came back to this post to change something...

@ebertini

I'm not a mastodon expert. But I think you can just edit a post. That comes close to reposting, right? And you can put a comment on top of it like "update: I added this comment".

seblammers,
@seblammers@vis.social avatar

@ebertini aaaaah, sorry! Yeah, no. I miss that too here.

Looking forward to visiting Edinburgh next week for the @InfoPlusConf and seeing everyone in attendance.

I created this advanced flowchart to help anyone feeling a little bit shy or overwhelmed if they're attending alone or attending a data vis event for the first time.

Week 45, 2023: Top album languages found on @wikidata right now.

For the complete list, see https://w.wiki/6TNS

📊 🎶🎵 @querywikidata

seblammers,
@seblammers@vis.social avatar

@moebeus

I'm curious, what's the context here? What is an "album"? Is this referring to music with spoken/sung language? Is this reflecting the current popular music? Based on what? Where do musicians need to publish their work in order to be reflected in this count of languages?

seblammers,
@seblammers@vis.social avatar

@moebeus

Ah, that's an impressive chart! I would have never guessed that distribution.

seblammers,
@seblammers@vis.social avatar

@moebeus

Thank you very much for the background info!

And thank you for contributing to this. I have to do some more exploration of the Wikidata world, which is very new to me. :)

seblammers,
@seblammers@vis.social avatar

@moebeus

If I may, some naive follow-up questions:

What is the relation between Wikidata and Wikipedia?
Is it accurate to say that Wikidata powers part of Wikipedia? If so, who decides when to pull in data from Wikidata? Is it up to the authors of Wikipedia entries to decide if an entry is enriched with Wikidata?

seblammers,
@seblammers@vis.social avatar

@moebeus

This sounds very intriguing! I'd love to learn more about the structure and the scope of Wikidata. What would you recommend for that?

It sure sounds like a great source for some meaningful data visualizations.

If you have more specific ideas about topics for charts, I'd love to chat :)

seblammers,
@seblammers@vis.social avatar

@moebeus

Thanks for these pointers. I started looking through the tutorial, which seems to be very beginner friendly indeed :)

seblammers,
@seblammers@vis.social avatar

@moebeus

Sounds good! I'll reach out once I managed to work through the tutorial and play a bit with some queries.

After 6 months I’ve just realised my (full, undistorted) sense of smell has seemingly returned to something like normal working order. Off to smell some chocolate, coffee, onions and bacon to enjoy them again!

seblammers,
@seblammers@vis.social avatar

@andykirk

Wow, that's literally life changing.

Enjoy the smells. And the food. And the drinks :)

seblammers,
@seblammers@vis.social avatar

@andykirk

Well, I'm glad to hear that it was only temporary. I can only imagine that it must be quite the downgrade of life quality if you can not smell and taste properly.

Ok, Jane (@janeadams) was persuasive enough to convince me to hang out here more. It seems like a peaceful place! I hope I can contribute something interesting. I will also be promoting my newsletter and academic stuff if people don’t mind. If anyone wants to give me some advice on how to contribute I’d be listening. I hope I can bring some fun!

Yay, great to have you here Enrico! I think you will enrich this space with a lot of great input, thoughts and questions :)

Loving the (Rhetorical Data Visualization) approach that you have been thinking/talking about!

NEW POST: Season 4 Episode 6 of 'Explore Explain', a 📺 🎧 series of long-form data visualisation conversations.

https://visualisingdata.com/2023/11/explore-explain-s4-e6-chimdi-nwosu/

In this episode I chat with Chimdi Nwosu about two of his wonderful Tableau visualisations: ‘Incarcerated in America‘ (published August 2021) and ‘Press Freedom Index‘ (published May 2023).

seblammers,
@seblammers@vis.social avatar

@andykirk

This episode was a real pleasure to listen to. A great conversation between two great dataviz practitioners.

I was very happy to listen to this BEFORE I had seen the actual data visualizations that are being discussed. I just love to imagine them by the verbal descriptions and then go on to actually check them out.

Many thanks to Andy and to Chimdi!

Thanks for being an awesome podcast / interview host and asking questions that make your guests say "good question!" more than I can keep count of.

The EU Data Visualisation Guide was published last month

https://data.europa.eu/apps/data-visualisation-guide/

I wrote all the content for it, and I built the interactive publication in @sveltejs. It has 7 chapters and contains a ton of examples. You can search it for a topic, or use it as a guided course and browse from page to page. It basically condenses all I learned about data visualization in the past decade

seblammers,
@seblammers@vis.social avatar

@maarten

Wow, this sounds like a really big project with lots of effort put in from you. It looks very comprehensive from my first look around.

Why are you not credited on the site itself? Should be worth attributing it to the author and developer.

I have very ambivalent feelings about data visualization awards. But having said that... It feels good when your work wins an #InformationIsBeautiful gold, and is is voted the Most Beautiful overall!

See the entry here https://www.informationisbeautifulawards.com/showcase/6530-atlas-of-sustainable-development-goals-2023 or go directly to the Sustainable Development Goals Atlas https://datatopics.worldbank.org/sdgatlas

Congrats to the whole team, and especially to the dataviz team, with @JanWillemTulp @dominikus and @al_ice_t

More stippling practice with directional lights.

seblammers,
@seblammers@vis.social avatar

@mikebrondbjerg

Nice! I really like this style. I think the white ink on black paper is a big factor too.

It's funny how good our brains are at constructing shapes from incomplete data.

Like here, where most of the spheres only exist in my mind, while in paper it's merely a bunch of dots artistically arranged to create the impression of the view of a sphere.

Would love to see this neighborhood map for other cities (and to see it change over time!) https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2023/upshot/extremely-detailed-nyc-neighborhood-map.html

seblammers,
@seblammers@vis.social avatar

@mstringer

I thought the same thing after seeing this map :)

But I guess it's taking quite some time and actual participation by the residents to gather the necessary data. Makes the NY map even more impressive.
