I'm currently reading through/editing a novel and am annoyed to discover Google Docs lack any proper way to continue where you last left off. So, I have to remember where I was, which is always iffy. At least the book has chapter headers and a TOC I can quickly use to bump around, but still...

@vitriolix There's an idea I hadn't thought of. It might be a decent solution. Ironically, there's a 'bookmark' function in GDocs that is only useful for sending links that automatcially return to the spot where you placed it. There's no way I can see to just zip to a bookmark within the doc. It's bizarre.

March 6th: What five things do you need to become a writer?

  1. Engage in the act of putting words down on some form of paper, be it virtual or otherwise.
  2. Persistence
  3. The ability to accept rejection and failure (especially if you're trying to get your stuff out into the world).
  4. Ideas
  5. Discipline to continue putting words down in order to finish the project

Complete this phrase: I write because...

I like to put words to (virtual) paper. I like to tell stories and work things out by writing them down. I enjoy writing, although I don't enjoy the constant self-doubt about the results. I've always been writing about something throughout my life, whether it's stories, novels, or articles and reviews. I hope to continue to do so.

My current side project is trying to set up on my with a pretty massive set of ROMs and it's turning into a real chore since there's no easy way to get the ROMs onto the Steam Deck. It involves using an external harddrive, dealing with a specific directory structure, and manually copying the ROMs from the drive to the Deck. It's a whole thing. I really hope it works right once all that is done.

@julianwki No, I hadn't considered an option like that. I'm not sure I'm an advanced enough user for that kind of thing, but I'll look it up.

Finished the audio book for the Internet Con by @pluralistic . It's a fascinating and actually kind of scary book about the evils of big tech and the current state of the Internet and well worth a read (or listen, as the case may be).

@gamingonlinux I've seen that damn 1 Crit Failure a surprising amount in my travels in the game.

Seeing folks from Insomniac, Blizzard, and Obsidian attack Baldur's Gate 3 for the way they released the game REALLY makes me want to buy it out of principle.

Why are they picking on this game and didn't do so with the likes of a game like Elden Ring?

I'm grumpy about this, lol.

sentientsponge,
@sentientsponge@mastodon.social avatar

@britt This sort of developer complaining sounds a lot like saying you're bitter you can't make a game as good as BG3, which should almost certainly be GotY by a wide margin. It's a hell of an accomplishment on so many levels. I hope it pays off.

Three games that I somehow missed out on.

Still can't believe I didn't have Shovel Knight on Switch!
They were super cheap as well.

This past weekend, my mind has been on STG games, so I just had to get Dariusburst.

Shovel Knight was just €21:

And Hotshot Racing only €17

@OutofPrintArchive All three are excellent choices. I love Darius in particular, but Hotshot Racing was really underappreciated as a superb arcade racer.

@Skepticat Ouch. This post hurt to read. Or maybe that was just my arthritis acting up.

Some of the late great Lance Reddick's best work, a staggeringly great core performance from the amazing @ashly_burch and a world that feels complex and deep and humane and also has you fight giant robotic animals. SUPER pleased about this.

@AlasdairStuart Easily one of my favorite series in gaming. I'm playing through the Burning Shores DLC now and loving the world yet again.
