You can really tell how insecure someone is based on how they introduce themselves. I was in a meeting today. Someone had to introduce themselves as 'My name is Dr. xxx. I was a former Xxx employee. I was the first in Australia and maybe the world to do xxx. (No she wasnt. i checked.) . I have three degrees including a Masters of Law. I have worked for the UN, World Bank. I have published xxx. i am currently doing another Certificate at the moment. People in my country want me to run for president"

I was cringeing the whole time she was talking. it's like second hand embarrassment in a way. Cause how narcissistic can you be to enumerate all those things when 1. its not a job interview. 2. its a team meeting of another team which we were just invited to listen.

She also later said that she didn't do a PhD just to clean and cook. She's not 'domesticated'. Fine, sure, women shouldn't be expected to do that. But the way she phrased it as an individual privilege is cringe. So cringe

@bohemianchic on company meetings where a bunch of people from different departments start working together, I've seen people mentioning how long they have been at the company.

I don't see how that matters for the conversation, it feels like a "look how senior I am".

What password manager do you all recommend for a family plan? I want to get my parents on a shared plan in case we need to share passwords, but they're not particularly technical. I currently use BitWarden, but I'm not sure if another would be a better fit, or have better integration with Windows/Android/macOS/iOS.

sergi,
@sergi@floss.social avatar

@davidism I have no particular experience with family plans, but I've used Bitwarden on Linux, Windows, MacOS and Android with no issues.

On a Desktop OS it might be easier for them to use the browser extension than the actual app, if they mostly use webapps and don't need to use passwords outside of the browser.

@downey thanks for sharing this resource!

About trying if it works, for this specific case, well, it's not worth my time. I found was I was looking for using other sources. But adding your link to my bookmarks for next time! I have been using Pocket before as a way to circumvent paywalls, but this one is less convoluted.

Looking for advice. I want to set up one or two indoor cameras to check up on my while I'm away from home for a few days. Are IP cameras what I should be looking into, or a different type of tech?

Setting up a Raspberry Pi or similar with a webcam and custom made server seems overkill, there must be something else on the market for that?

I don't want to pay a subscription or have my privacy invaded.

@Crell @vintprox @bobmagicii @syntaxseed with proper caching headers, many of these requests should have minimum impact on the server. And for data heavy endpoints, well, you would be hitting anyway a JSON endpoint (or maybe more than one).

Hey fediverse, do you have a recommendation for a or that:

  • Tells the time ๐Ÿ™ƒ
  • Measures heart rate.
  • Counts steps.
  • Allows storing the above to get a historical of data.
  • Has alarms as vibrations.
  • Reminds you of calendar events (which need to sync my online calendar).
  • Waterproof enough for swimming.
    Optional:
  • NFC payment.
  • ECG
  • Respond to phone calls.

I had a Sense that was doing all the above, but they keep bricking shortly after one year of having them

Uh, I'm quite disappointed about this future deprecation: https://blog.miguelgrinberg.com/post/it-s-time-for-a-change-datetime-utcnow-is-now-deprecated

It will break some stuff in a few years when it becomes effective.

sergi,
@sergi@floss.social avatar

@diazona more than disappointed I should say surprised. We are talking about deprecating a very used API of the standard library. That's a big deal.

Also, as the linked article says, there are popular use cases like web apps that work perfectly well with naive datetimes because everything in the system is UTC based.

If you have a personal website: what platform, CMS, SSG, tech stack, or service are you using for it? Would you pick it again? How much technical expertise did it require to set up and make it your own? And do you have to do a lot of maintenance?

sergi,

@matthiasott for my personal website, which very rarely changes, raw HTML and CSS, all handcrafted. The time it would have taken me to learn some new tool would have been longer than just writing it. Also, it was a good exercise to refresh some fundamentals.

I'm currently setting up a blog, and I'm trying Zola for that. So far I'm very happy with the experience, building my own templates was a breeze!

Here's my #gaming #handheld collection!

The purple Game Boy Color was my first ever game system, followed by the purple #GBA and then the blue SP. The original DMG needs some repairs and replacement parts, it was a garage sale pickup years ago.

I use the #SteamDeck a lot nowadays, but I still try to make time for the #retro #handhelds. The mini #emulation handhelds can be a nice change of pace as well! Do you still like old school handhelds? Let me know!

@rootcompute what are you faves for the PSP? I recovered mine a few months ago, and after playing Patapon 1/2 and Lumines I am looking for more "must play" before shelving it again.
