@mxtthxw
As I usually destroy a laptop in about two years, it's for the best.
Most recent buy is an 11 year old Macbook Air that's being tested as a replacement for my broken MPC.
@revk Fond memories of having to raise a change record for that. In the IBM sanctioned rollback plan we generally put some variation on 'reverse the spin of the planet so time goes backwards.'
@mxtthxw No help to you directly but our local chazzer had a load last time I went in and most had HDMI ports. As much as anything else it would be useful if you wanted a dumb TV.
@glynmoody
I was expecting semi-legal migrant worker camps by now but the party's rampant xenophobia put paid to that, and we just get good old fashioned slavery.
Storm Babet flooding 'could last for DAYS' after heavy downpours and 80mph gale force winds sparked chaos - with nine dead, trains cancelled, thousands without power and homes wrecked by floods #AureFreePress#News#UK#GlobalWarming#climatechange
@Free_Press
The Daily Mail specialises in fearmongering and extreme weather is one of its favourite sources. Climate denialism is also editorial policy so the two subjects never meet.
@glynmoody
I assume there are people tracking media messaging in countries where these 'strongman' characters emerge, and it feels like it needs to be analysed alongside campaigns in other countries. I wouldn't be surprised to see very similar patterns.
@Vibracobra23 Absolutely, there'll be riverside development in Leeds in the same state as Sheffield. If you look on the flood maps the high risk area literally starts half a km downstream from where I am and it goes through north-west Leeds, through the city centre and beyond.
I've been asked by a digital publication to do a regular column on forgotten or overlooked bits of tech and business history that changed stuff forever.
So what's your favourite weird nugget of obscure history or people in tech or business?
This is LITERALLY your chance to make me write about it 😄
@garius
The two that came to mind immediately are the chording keyboard (specifically the Microwriter AgendA, but there is History) and the CueCat as an example of repurposing proprietary systems.
Via John Gruber, who has terrible takes but also finds interesting things: https://kagi.com/ - a paid search engine. I might take it for a spin, and see if it is any good.
I normally use DuckDuckGo which is Bing reloaded, and it is good, but still an ad-based service.
