Wow! Affinity are obviously listening to their market! I just got an email stating a 4 point pledge. Part 1 is the most important and includes this:

"If we do offer a subscription, it will only ever be as an option alongside the perpetual model, for those who prefer it. "

Hurrah!!!

Well done Affinity!

If you have 'The Great Suspender Original' Chrome extension installed - delete it. It is no longer available on the Chrome store because it hijacks the Google Results pages inserting an iframe from yellow-pages.com with your search term and inserts several, I'm assuming, paid adverts that look like organic results. Thought my SERP results were odd the last few days.

'The Great Suspender' extension (note lack of 'Original' in name) I think is ok - it is still in the Chrome store.

Quick reminder how much SERP rankings change on a daily basis. This case is a B2B site so drops at weekends make sense as the intent for certain keywords changes and spikes as unexpected events, global and local, cause keywords and topics to become popular for short amounts of time as Google tests out what it needs to promote up the rankings (*my assumption). Nothing sits still for long in

Trimming back a marjoram bush this weekend and we found this white moth.

I have identified it as a Pterophorinae - a Common Plume!

Result! New Sitebulb version now available including something I talked to them about quite a while back.

"New Feature: HTML Templates

While crawling, Sitebulb will identify the different HTML templates used across the website, grouping like pages together."

From: https://sitebulb.com/release-notes/?utm_source=app&utm_medium=dashboard

IMHO this will help understand a sites technical structure a lot quicker and flush out the awkward odd pages. Brilliant update!

Google have now stoped Sitemap ping endpoint from working as they did advise they would be doing some time ago - https://seroundtable.com/google-sitemaps-ping-endpoints-no-longer-work-36692.html

Knowing this was coming I added an update field in my #11ty front matter that my sitemap picks up as a data point when building the site so that Google and other search engines get a true lastmod date - and they like that.

Happy to those that celebrate!

Especially @zeldman who popularised it!

I really really dislike leaf blowers.

We have a lot of trees. Oaks, beech and others. So the lawn is blanketed in leaves at this time of year.

So I got a gadget.

A hand pushed Gardenia leaf and grass collector.

It’s brilliant!

One thing I have noticed since moving my social presence mostly over to Mastodon is that the alt text I write for the images on my websites has become a lot better.

It's an alt ATTRIBUTE not an alt TAG!

I'm back on The Edge Of The Web Radio podcast again for part two. This time I talk a bit about my time at art college, how that changes my personal perspective on SEO work and other rubbish such as AI.

Enjoy.

👉 New on S&N: Disallowing Disallow

“Turns out, the Robots.txt file was preventing search engines from crawling the archives folder, which then meant that Google couldn’t then read the robots meta tags and know to noindex the pages. Damn.”

https://stuffandnonsense.co.uk/blog/disallowing-disallow

simoncox,
@simoncox@seocommunity.social avatar

@chris22smith @malarkey

There is - obvs the robots. txt but if urls are indexed you usually want them out of the index so need to let Google read the pages noindex - then turn off using robots.txt Alternatively you can remove those urls from Google using Search Console. 😀

simoncox,
@simoncox@seocommunity.social avatar

@malarkey

Additionally Google will be following links from other sites to your old pages. Even if you get them out of the index it is still going to be looking for them because of the offsite links. And your old posts are going to have a lot of links!

Someone said they would never hire fat people, explaining that overweight people could not be trusted because if they lost the most precious thing in life - their body, their health - how could you trust them not to ruin the business they were hired to do?

While I don't endorse this opinion, I have to admit that it has been on my mind for about a year now.

I mean, I've been thinking about my body and my health.

Ok, starting what should be the first of an annual tradition of posting the as the new year rolls around.

This was introduced to me via @simon, and I’m pleased to see many other healthy examples on Mastodon so far, but you’re v welcome to ad your own, under the same hashtag 👍

    Oh yes.
    I'm an 'in the way' magnet.

    When shopping at a supermarket wherever I stand trying to be out of the way of anyone else, while my wife chooses what to load up in the basket, I will inevitably be in someone's way within seconds. Once I stood next to a completely empty chiller cabinet, 15 seconds later someone came with a big trolly to fill it up.
