We're not just building Tapestry, we're also building a mobile app for @daringfireball.

I'm going to miss the tap to zoom in Safari. Not.

Listening to Mac Power Users and @macsparky brought up a great idea: does anyone know of a gallery of panoramic photos of Disney World that I can load into the Vision Pro?

stegrainer,
@stegrainer@mastodon.social avatar

@caseyliss @macsparky I am 100% going to be taking some next time we go. Wish I’d taken more before now.

Even though I probably won’t see them in the Vision Pro for a long time.

stegrainer,

@caseyliss Not sure you know what you’re signing up for if you want me to come over anytime I want to look at Disney photos. ;)

@gedeonm Never a fun feeling, but you’re pretty great and the things you’ve made are great! And you seem like a genuinely decent person. So there’s that.

Has anyone created a hamburger menu with class="cheezburger” and needed to write a CSS selector for an ancestor element with :has(.cheezburger) yet?

stegrainer,
@stegrainer@mastodon.social avatar

@brandon I used ‘:has(.hugz)’ for an Easter egg on a project.

Terms of Service; Didn’t Read is a brilliant idea that should be incorporated directly into actual terms of service for software. In fact, every legal document should have a TL;DR that simplifies it down. But that will never happen because lawyers are incentivized to make such things as obtuse as possible.

Over the weekend, I pondered a bit about how the Vision Pro could enable more accessible perspectives of the world:

Dipping my toe into The Discourse…

Nothing dictates that receiving a Webmention means you’re bound to display its source content on your website.

You could…

• forward the Webmention to your email,
• build a private notifications dashboard (with or without a moderation queue),
• add a link to the source page to your website without including its content,
• do something wild like set up an auto responder to the original author thanking them for the like/boost/reply,
• etc. etc. etc.

stegrainer,
@stegrainer@mastodon.social avatar

@jgarber That takes the concept further and further into nerd-only territory.

I like the concept of the IndieWeb but so much of it is fiddly and requires dev experience that it’s hard to imagine someone who just wants to write and share their own content ever succeeding in implementing it well.

“Going beyond that, could we use software to color adjust and show the world as those with color blindness see? As people with other visual impairments see?”

That thought occurred to me as well. AVP has potential to be a powerful accessibility tool.

The problem with watching monster-of-the-week-type crime dramas over a decade after they aired is that often the guest actors in some episodes are now really famous (e.g. David Harbour popping up in Elementary) and you know instantly they’re the murderer because they can actually act

stegrainer,
@stegrainer@mastodon.social avatar

@sophie Haha we’ve been rewatching Castle and I’ve definitely noticed this, although they do a fairly good job of either having multiple well-recognizable people in one episode or having it be someone else entirely.

stegrainer,

@kissane 1000 times yes. I know it’s sometimes necessary or at least in both parties best interests, but I cringe at impacting someone else’s time and energy without good reason.

I don’t even like posting responses or comments most of the time. (I delete probably 70% of my draft replies without ever sending one.)

Nearly 30 minutes from the New York Times on how to cook a fried egg. 30 minutes.

stegrainer,

@gedeonm I could believe that amount of effort/time for perfect hard-boiled eggs (especially if you factor in removing the shell). I feel like that is my white whale in the kitchen.

Fried? Easy.

“Can you lie down on your back and watch a movie on the ceiling like Tim Cook and have the back of your head be comfortable?

“Sure. I watched 20 minutes of Moana while staring up at the blue sky and clouds above Joshua Tree and it was so tranquil and comfortable that my wife thought I was asleep.”

https://sixcolors.com/post/2024/02/answering-a-few-early-vision-pro-questions/

bro you were at joshua tree with your life partner and this is what you do

you’re lucky she didn’t leave your ass in the desert

stegrainer,
@stegrainer@mastodon.social avatar

@jgarber I'm fairly certain that he was referring to one of the virtual environments within Vision Pro:

https://appleinsider.com/articles/23/12/11/more-apple-vision-pro-environments-surface-to-show-where-you-can-virtually-be

Joshua Tree is supposedly one of them.

My guess is he was laying on the floor in his house but the movie was playing in the sky of a Joshua Tree virtual environment.

For most of my professional life I’ve been perplexed by the whole venture capital scene in Tech. I’ve never really understood it… so like banks/hedge fund guys give you money and you get all excited cause you can build your thing but… now you’re on a major hook. They’re looking over your shoulder constantly expecting results and influencing your direction. If you don’t deliver then… you lose your house? You go into bankruptcy? Seems SUPER stressful. I just don’t get it.

stegrainer,
@stegrainer@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm 100% agreed. I left a startup that I was excited about at first because they started seeking VC (after explicitly saying they wouldn’t during the hiring process).

They’re now making something completely different from what I was originally hired to explore making, all because the investors want a return.

stegrainer,
@stegrainer@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm Worse, it encourages unnecessary growth (to justify all that incoming money) when a much smaller team can make a decent product.
