Big news: I’m happy to share that yesterday I started a new job at Microsoft where I'll be working on web components for Fluent UI.

I've had a long relationship with Microsoft – from Paravel helping to build the first responsive version of their homepage in 2012 to the whole 5 year "" stunt that Rey Bango coordinated for ShopTalk – and this feels like a nice new chapter in that story arc.

What I’d like from today’s Apple iPad event:

  • Camera on the long side of the iPad (where it belongs)
  • Longer battery life
  • Faster processor (duh)
  • To not have Sherlocked 🙏
stegrainer,
@stegrainer@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm @jonhicks I was curious about that too. Listening to Jason Snell and Myke Hurley talk about it in the latest episode of Upgrade, it sounded like the nano texture was probably best if you’re specifically using the device in bright light, but not as great if you care about picture quality in general.

video/mp4

stegrainer,
@stegrainer@mastodon.social avatar

@jonhicks @gedeonm Haha yeah that was the question I asked that they answer later in the episode, but essentially it's a different treatment to the glass than the monitors. (As I understand it, the monitors have microscopic holes in them or something to make the matte effect, where the iPad screens are a glass treatment instead.)

stegrainer,
@stegrainer@mastodon.social avatar

@jonhicks @gedeonm I don't think the nanotexture glass on the iPad will add any feeling of paper-like texture, but I haven't tried them to say that for certain.

Have you tried the Paper-like screen covers?

If you've ever found yourself missing the "good old days" of the , what is it that you miss? (Interpret "it" broadly: specific websites? types of activities? feelings? etc.) And approximately when were those good old days?

No wrong answers — I'm working on an article and wanted to get some outside thoughts.

stegrainer,
@stegrainer@mastodon.social avatar

@molly0xfff @matthiasott Unexpected communities of people connected without large companies involved. Goofy esoteric experiments. Creating ephemeral things without worrying about how they might be used by some nefarious third party.

The feeling that just by putting something up on the web, it was now a part of a larger conscious collective instead of just another junk mail flyer drifting down an already overstuffed gutter.

Does anyone remember an old DOS (I think) game that was black background with white stars and you had to get from the left to the right by pressing spacebar to go up and down and avoid the stars? Each level added more stars. You were a spaceship I think and it would draw your path as you went.

It was basically flappy bird but space.

Anyone know the name of it?

The double-brood emergence of cicadas are here and they’re so loud some people are calling the authorities. Their sound is sort of surreal, kinda like something out of a sci-fi movie. Alien invaders just over the horizon. Spooky.

A designer possess citizenship in a discipline. So too does a front-end engineer.

A design engineer possess dual citizenship.

But a website maker? They are an exile. They "respect no borders and enjoy no citizenship”

It is in the latter I increasingly find myself.

Mastodon : If you haven’t yet, log into your account on the web & set up a few featured hashtags.

Featured hashtags let visitors to your profile quickly know what interests you & are different than just putting tags in your main bio decription. When tapped they search specifically on your timeline to reveal the topics you are interested in and post often about.

They display in clients like @ivory & are a way to quickly access posts for easy threading too. 👍

lol these corporate security tools are so ridiculous

apparently my computer is not “safe” because i don't have a password manager installed

i don't have a third-party one installed because i use the one built in to macOS

but they don't count that one as being "installed" because it comes with the OS and they can't track whether it's used

so to comply, i have to install a third-party password manager

in other words: the macOS one is too safe because they can't track it so it doesn't count

stegrainer,
@stegrainer@mastodon.social avatar

@jimniels Meanwhile I couldn’t download updates for my password manager at my last gig because the Mac App Store wasn’t secure, and I wasn’t allowed to install or update software from there.

The hurdles I'm jumping through to get Declan to be able to play on a Minecraft server that I'm hosting, using his Switch, are truly asinine.

This is user-hostile from top to bottom, inside and out.

And all this started because he put HOURS into building something locally on his switch that just ✨disappeared ✨.

stegrainer,
@stegrainer@mastodon.social avatar

@caseyliss Yeeeeeah, the Switch version of Minecraft is a clustercuss. It was even worse when they had two different versions simultaneously for awhile.

Might be time to move to the computer version … at least there you can back up locally made files or more easily join servers (should you choose that route instead).

I hope that Apple had someone (or even several someones) filming yesterday's solar eclipse in one (or more) places along the path of totality.

Being able to experience and then relive that moment in an immersive experience would be amazing. Having it as one of their default immersive environments even more so.

One built not to crack a lame joke, but to help your visitors get back on track. Because that’s what a good 404 page should do.
