Four years ago today, the CDC advised all Americans to wear masks in public to avoid spreading covid.

Trump immediately announced he would refuse to wear one, needlessly turning masking into a divisive partisan issue and contributing to countless avoidable deaths.

steven,
@steven@zeroes.ca avatar

@rbreich And then public health gave up and agreed with Trump, instead of trying to keep people safe anyways...

@revk @mansr @coreyspowell I have to ask, are you guys riffing on today's XKCD on purpose, or is it an accident?

Because if it's on purpose, these are some very funny posts.

@Ptisan @mansr @revk @coreyspowell Those emoji were photographed in the southern hemisphere.

steven,

@revk @Ptisan @mansr @coreyspowell Wait, no isn't that true? I thought the moon appeared upside down in the southern hemisphere?

Oh, but that Unicode codepoint clearly says Waning Gibbous Moon Symbol. So Australians just need a different font.

somebody really needs to make a keyboard-layout-editor.com-to-PCB service.

like, even if you can't automate it! you should be able to upload a keyboard layout and pay 50$ or something and get back some PCB design files and a BOM

steven,
@steven@zeroes.ca avatar

@foone Legitimately, if there was a semi-standardized BOM for the microcontroller parts, it would be pretty trivial for amateurs to do the rest.

In a "post your layout to Reddit and a weirdo will probably do it for you" sort of way.

In theory, if I was building a web app and wanted to avoid storing any potentially identifiable information, could I hash a username and store that?

Like, I don't know your username or your password, but you're still able to log in because the information you give me matches a hash?

steven,
@steven@zeroes.ca avatar

@Paxxi @dalias Basically it's a multiple choice survey. I want people to be able to come back later to answer more questions, while maintaining a constant identity to do correlations and avoid duplication.

The actual survey answers can be public. They're harmless. The only risk is them getting linked to a real identity.

I think assigning the username myself might be the best choice. That way it's impossible for a user to use their real name or email address.

That being said... couldn't I prevent somebody from testing if a hashed username is in the list by just hashing the username and password as a single string?

I should do the whole sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y thing, huh?

steven,
@steven@zeroes.ca avatar

I don't think I've actually seen the commands written like that.

Is it a bad idea to do it like that?

steven,
@steven@zeroes.ca avatar

@croissant Okay, so pushing things a little bit further I tried a:

ssh steven@server.local "sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y"

and wow is that sending me a lot of warning messages I've never seen before.

Did you know there's no Unicode code point for a space that matches the width of an emoji?

Unicode has a bunch of space characters, but the size of emoji characters is defined differently so that even the full-width space character " " will cause inconsistent alignment in different fonts.

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/66496671/is-there-a-blank-unicode-character-matching-emoji-width

steven,

This is why accounts like @EmojiMeadow always use full grids of emojis.

You can align emoji like this:

🌿🦌🧅🌾😂
🧵🍅😭🏀⚠️
😛🍑🐐🦹🎀
🌿🦌🧅🌾😂
🧵🍅😭🏀⚠️

But not like this:

🌿 🦌 🧅
🌾 😂
🧵🍅😭🏀⚠️
😛🍑🐐🦹
🎀 🌿

Even through both characters are notionally "squares".

Biggest disappointment with :mastodon: 4.2 webUI thus far: can't hide link previews. At the very least, the card should be blurred (https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/29431), but I'd still like the option back to not show it at all.

steven,
@steven@zeroes.ca avatar

@trendless Ah, yeah. Fair. I would love to see a really compact, elegant, text-first front end.

My biggest gripe is how much vertical space gets wasted, that could be saved with just a small amount of extra logic and design.

steven, to random
@steven@zeroes.ca avatar

So much this.

People are way more terrified of white masks than black masks.

The downside being a lot of people pointlessly dying, as a result of not wanting to wear white.

The upside being that I can put on a white mask and get much more personal space in the grocery store.

Threads choosing to only federate posts out and only federate likes in is absolutely hilarious.

steven,

If you don't know, technically-speaking, likes; replies; and boosts are all basically the same thing.

Threads is receiving all of these posts, and then choosing to throw out boosts and replies.

It's still wild to me that BC's official medical position on masks is that they're not legally required.

I get that the point is to tell people to not wear masks, so that they get sick and die.

But, like... even if that's your position - it's still not actually health advice?

https://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/careers/managers-supervisors/covid-19/mask_personal_choice_85x11.pdf

steven,
@steven@zeroes.ca avatar

If you look at the BCCDC website, the most prominent text is telling you not to ever criticize people for not wearing a mask.

  1. That is not medical advice.

  2. You are telling me that the feelings of people who want to kill me are more important than my own health and safety. That is psychotic.

Well this is fun.

If you add custom CSS so that:

@-moz-document domain(zeroes.ca) {
.column[aria-label="Home"] { width: 600px !important; }
}

You get the column width of the simple Mastodon interface, while still getting the multiple column view of the advanced interface.

https://superuser.com/questions/318912/how-can-i-override-the-css-of-a-site-in-firefox-with-usercontent-css

steven,
@steven@zeroes.ca avatar

Using the same instructions, you can hide link previews on Mastodon with:

@-moz-document domain(zeroes.ca) {
.status-card { display: none !important; }
}

steven,
@steven@zeroes.ca avatar

Actually, making all images on Mastodon shorter, such that:

@-moz-document domain(zeroes.ca) {
.media-gallery { max-height: 300px !important; }
}
