Badger Badger was 2003, and it was the first thing I saw escape the confines of internet nerd-dom and go viral in office spaces. Dancing Baby was mid-90โ€™s, so several years earlier, but I never saw it referenced out of the community of the terminally online. Heck, the web was still in itโ€™s infancy in the mid-90โ€™s.

Sourcehut is for-profit. You pay them to host your data, to provide public access, to run mailng lists, to run CI build serversโ€ฆ youโ€™re paying for the services. But the source code is OSS; you can download and run your own services, all or just a few. The โ€œpaying them to host the software for youโ€ isnโ€™t the issue, right? Itโ€™s not that someone is charging for hosting and maintenance (and, ultimately, salaries for the people working on the software), but whether or not the software is free, and whether you can self-host.

I like your point about finding repos. I think itโ€™d behoove all of the bit players to band together to provide one big searchable repo list. Heck, even I, who hates github with a smoldering passion, have enough sense to go there first to search for software; thatโ€™s just the nature of a hegemony. The stumbling of the attempt to create a common VCS hosting API (ForgeFed) is lamentable, but getting adoption would have been a uphill battle even without the rumored in-fighting and drama.

Nate Silver is the founding, or one of the original founders, of 538 - which has, I see, been acquired by ABC News. Heโ€™s a statistician of some repute, and competent; heโ€™s pretty good at explaining and summarizing stats to non-math types. Heโ€™s gotten a lot of heat for forecasting results that were wrong, starting with the Clinton/Trump election in 2016, but if much of that is because people are terrible at understanding probability, and if you tell the average person something has an 80% chance of happening, they take it at a guarantee.

The issue is that 538 was pretty reliable at the start, but then something happened with polling and things started to go against predictions frequently enough that they sort of became just another voice - instead of a source you might use to bet on. The ABC acquisition probably didnโ€™t help.

Anyway, I digress. Nate was the statistician face behind 538. I donโ€™t know what heโ€™s doing now.

I know everybody in this community knows what you mean, but I just want to say, coming across your post in unfiltered โ€œworldโ€ mode, the phrase โ€œdesign a large solar systemโ€ totally threw my brain out of gear.

Are they talking about a sci-fi role-playing game? Is this some astronomy jargon? What the heck am I reading?

Yeah, and Iโ€™ve said this before, but you quoted the relevant part: heโ€™s not taking action against Israel because heโ€™s stands to lose more in the election than he gains. And if Trump wins the election, he will absolutely give Israel explicit support for going all-in on the genocide, including expelling from Gaza all Palestinians that they donโ€™t murder.

You could argue that maintaining a supportive posture for Israel at this juncture benefits the Palestinians. Thereโ€™s simply too much lobbying money, and still too much voting solidarity, at stake; and Bidenโ€™s bad for Palestine, but Trump is worse. We could hope that is Biden wins heโ€™ll take a firmer stance against the genocide, but Iโ€™m hoping it quietly.

Can we still presume that black votes are necessarily going to go Democrat? There have been some weird minority voting outcomes in recent years, with e.g. Hispanic communities voting red despite the strongly anti-minority and anti-immigrant planks in the Republican platform. Democrats are more liberal on LGBTQ and pro-choice, and these are likely single-issue voters driven by religious decisions. We saw the same thing to a lesser degree in black communities, less starkly contrasted because of whatโ€™s at stake for Hispanic communities.

Is the evidence this is going to benefit Democrats?

Canโ€™t tell if itโ€™s misspelled โ€œCockโ€ or misspelled โ€œGlock,โ€ or something Iโ€™ve never heard of called โ€œGlock.โ€

Are you judging by the movies, or the comic books? The movies keep him a perpetual teen; heโ€™s way more sassy and adult in the comics.

I kinda hate all spin-off superheroes. Supergirl, Superdog, Batgirl; although itโ€™s mostly _Girl versions of _Man. You never see WonderMan. WhitePanther wouldnโ€™t get much love. It just feels like wringing the olโ€™ franchise of every last drop of blood.

Sometimes it bites me. SpiderVerse is supposed to be good, but it breaks my spin-off Rule.

Heโ€™s OK if you stick to classic Superman. He wasnโ€™t a god, back then. Couldnโ€™t turn back time, out-speed The Flash, or fly into the sun and pupate for a hundred years into some ultimate being.

He became increasingly absurd over the years.

sxan,
@sxan@midwest.social avatar

The original, too? He was the epitome of the necessary sidekick, and have Batman an external voice, other than just growing at criminals.

I love the classic TV Dynamic Duo.

Nice sleuthing!

I didnโ€™t mean so much similar names, as identical characters differing only by gender/race.

Theyโ€™re almost different characters, arenโ€™t they? Iโ€™m fond of the original shows, but thatโ€™s nostalgia.

I went through a goth phase, too; I liked the Nolan reboot, and Nightwing was sufficiently angsty; now Iโ€™m just tired of it. I think it peaked in Game of Thrones - you canโ€™t get much more depressingly negative than that - but I hope it swings back around to the golden age of optimism. You see signs, in movements like Solarpunk, but weโ€™ve got a long way to go.

Dunno. How patronizing is it?

Single-issue voters are one of the biggest challenges to a functioning democracy. Planks and balance provide depth; a willingness to compromise and work to the greater good.

But thatโ€™s gone now, isnโ€™t it. And when a Palestinian advocate candidate is running for president, who supports pro-choice, affordable housing, and every other liberal plank except they object to green-colored libraries, then fuck them because I have to have my green-painted libraries!

Minnesotaโ€™s.

Minnesotaโ€™s group is approaching this a smart way, from the local up. Theyโ€™re not spending much time in the high-profile positions; theyโ€™re tackling local elections. Gets people used to the idea, and they stack higher and higher positions as theyโ€™re going. Itโ€™ll take time, but starting at the top and working down is a lot harder.

Is this how CA is approaching it?

sxan,
@sxan@midwest.social avatar

100% agree on FPTP.

sxan,
@sxan@midwest.social avatar

I knew what was going to catch an eye. Weโ€™re taking about single issue voters - would it have been better to compare 2A to genocide? Or anti-choice? Because those are real single choice issues that even better epitomize the issue, and neither is nearly as horrible as whatโ€™s going on in Gaza; Palestine is just the most recent iteration.

And in this case, the single issue voters are making an insane decision, because heโ€™s actively goading Israel on. If you think Bidenโ€™s weak-sauce response is bad, wait until Trump is in office: he will shift all military and financial support from Ukraine to Israel.

Netanyahu is ignoring Biden not just because Biden isnโ€™t taking any substantive action (โ€œstrongly-worded letters!โ€), but because heโ€™s knows Biden has every chance to lose to Trump and then he can start building the gas chambers.

People sitting this one out over Palestine are clueless dumb fucks. I hate Bidenโ€™s continued support of Israel in this - although I understand it as political expediency - but Trump is undeniably a worse option for Palestinians.

sxan,
@sxan@midwest.social avatar

Except where itโ€™s been implemented. We have had several successes at the local level in Minnesota; weโ€™re a long way from the governor, but itโ€™s always moving forward, with a win every year and - so far - no screw-ups causing a regression.

Oh. Oh, man. Thatโ€™s harsh. That ranks up there with the Concorde jokes that came out of the 2000 crash.

Itโ€™s a keeper.
