opened the kitchen window tonight. the screen has some holes, but I didn't have the light on, so I didn't worry about bugs getting in.

next thing i know there's a massive June Bug in the living room, FLAGRANTLY VIOLATING THE SOCIAL CONTRACT THAT'S RIGHT THERE IN ITS NAME.

I suspect I could listen/work to this for hours. “Is that you or are you you?” by Chris Zabriskie. From a video game, apparently (the last time I was a gamer that meant stacks of quarters). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ed8N141l9FQ

I can’t recommend being woken suddenly in the wee hours of the morning by your shower curtain collapsing.

Because then you don’t get back to sleep. 🤦‍♂️

this whole OpenAI/Scarlett Johansson thing really boils down to… a man who thought he could take what he wanted from a woman even after she clearly said no.

I’ve had a favourite author for more than 20 years. I really didn’t like their second-last book — after loving everything else they’d ever written.

I’ve never reviewed or even named that book publicly (nor will I now). And I unhesitatingly bought their next book (which I still haven’t read).

a friend — whom I’ve known 30 years — recently pulled me (back) into WhatsApp. She has a Mac & an iPad, but video chat with her granddaughter happens on WhatsApp; there are no Meta-is-evil arguments more powerful than that.

It immediately requested full access to my contacts, which I denied, explicitly to be uploaded to Meta’s servers.

Apple should disallow this. People have the right to share their own info with Meta (et al) — they do NOT have the right to share other people’s.

Someone pointed out on a podcast recently that in the metric system, there are units — metres, grams, litres, etc. — and that all multi-unit prefixes are Greek (deca, kilo, mega) while all sub-unit prefixes (deci, centi, milli) are Latin. (Yes, since 1935 there have been exceptions… still.)

I’ve been using the metric system since I was 6 and never noticed this.

How much did Apple pay some designer to find all of the most hideous possible options for Playlist artwork in Apple Music? This sampling barely scratches the surface of how truly awful they all are. Staggering achievement, really.

a) to hell with Adobe
b) I love how instead of yanking old media/apps I’ve paid for, Apple has, in contrast, upgraded old movies from SD > HD, and SDR > HDR — at no cost. Including titles that were digital downloads that came as codes redeemed from DVDs (in other words, not even purchased from Apple).

There are good and bad ways to treat customers. https://shakedown.social/@AAronL1968/112430436484912924

Relented and signed up for Amazon Prime for a 1-month trial. Opened Prime Video app on Apple TV, chose something “included with Prime” to watch (because Prime Video seems mostly to exist to upsell you on channels/partners for more money), then got hit with unskippable ads — 3 of them.

Deleted the app. Cancelled the trial. Despite 357 warnings, I’m delighted to be losing out on my “Prime benefits”. 🙄

It’s amazing how little I want to pay to watch ads.

I’ve really tried to get into Doctor Who. It’s never stuck. Even Jodie Whittaker and David Tennant — bags of charm, both of them — couldn’t pull me in. Matt Smith seemed fun, too. Ncuti Gatwa was good in his small role in Masters of the Air, and he more than held his own alongside Tennant, but I think I’m resigned to the fact that the Doctor just isn’t my bag. It’s the stories. They just aren’t aimed at me.

The latest Robert J Sawyer novel — The Downloaded — was, uh, downloaded to my Kindle today. Easily my favourite SF writer. You might know him as the writer behind the novel that 2009 TV series Flashforward (Joseph Fiennes, Sonya Walger) was based on. Check it out at: https://sfwriter.com.
