Flatpak users: expect a minor update within a few hours. Just performing some maintenance with our Flatpak, updating libraries this time.

@tenacity Somehow I didn't find an answer to this, so I have this question: Do you track and port new features and fixes from Audacity? I saw the Audacity new release announcement about lossless pitch change and couldn't find out if Tenacity ported that feature.

tenacity,
@tenacity@fosstodon.org avatar

@kamikazow Sometimes we track upstream. For example, 1.4 will track upstream's realtime effects. It really depends on what users want.

tenacity,
@tenacity@fosstodon.org avatar

@kamikazow it is in a way, but we're limited in resources and it's a little difficult because of how far we're diverging away from Audacity.

Take realtime effects for example. See https://codeberg.org/tenacityteam/tenacity/issues/330 and you'll see how many upstream PRs have to be implemented (there might be more needed later). Forget anything from 3.5 too.

Heads up for nightly users: if you've been experiencing issues with trying to save projects or get an error about automatic backup failing, update to the latest nightly now. We fixed an issue where writing to a project fails and creating new tracks and other operations fails because auto save failed.

Hey @tenacity - is there a mac-version?

tenacity,
@tenacity@fosstodon.org avatar

@trancefish We don't have a Mac version we release ourselves, but Tenacity is available in MacPorts: https://ports.macports.org/port/tenacity/

@eugenialoli@mastodon.social avatar

WTF? Is on the store ? Apparently it was running in the bg AS IF it was an invincible extension so SystemMonitor/htop would NOT see it as a process. But (also from flatpak store) saw it as it is: an app running on startup! Killing it killed Gnome session! It was also spiking wifi, and was leaking the Gnome gjs service from 4MB RAM to 120MB. Uninstalling fixed the prob

Third party flatpak/snaps should be vetted.

tenacity,
@tenacity@fosstodon.org avatar

@eugenialoli That behavior sounds very suspicious. We'll check it out whenever we can.

Tenacity does NOT, or should not, use ANY networking. To have Internet usage in general is extremely suspicious.

Also, the Tenacity Flatpak is official. We maintain it ourselves.

tenacity,
@tenacity@fosstodon.org avatar

@eugenialoli To further add, Tenacity itself doesn't interact with gjs, so maybe it's some component inside the Flatpak.

tenacity,
@tenacity@fosstodon.org avatar

@eugenialoli @sonny No worries!

When did you notice any of these symptoms? Did you notice them when you first installed Tenacity or after a period of usage?

tenacity,
@tenacity@fosstodon.org avatar

@eugenialoli @sonny Tenacity has no reason to run in the background either. It shouldn't have background permissions either, but we'll investigate accordingly.

Here are some statistics that boggle our mind (and may boggle yours)!

As of 2024-04-07 4:13 PM PDT, Tenacity 1.3.3 has been downloaded from Codeberg:

  • 30,911 times (Windows x86_64)
  • 2,133 times (Windows x86)
  • 4,793 (Linux x86_64 AppImage)

Along with that, our FFmpeg library distribution has been downloaded:

  • 6,911 times (Windows x86_64)
  • 1,786 times (Windows x86)

Wow! 🤯

tenacity,
@tenacity@fosstodon.org avatar

We have to give you guys thanks for such numbers. While it might not be an accurate indicator of the number of users, it's still mind boggling to see how many times Tenacity has been downloaded. You guys are awesome! 😄

Hey everyone! We're back with a proposal: changing track duplication behavior. This is how it would work:

  • There would be a new Duplicate Entire Track option under the track controls

  • Ctrl/Cmd + D would now duplicate an entire track if no audio is selected but a track is. Its current behavior when audio is selected will be retained.

Would you like this new behavior?

tenacity,
@tenacity@fosstodon.org avatar

@spaetz The current behavior, when pressing Ctr/Cmd + D, requires that audio be selected. Only the selected audio is duplicated.

As for the option in the track control, none exists currently.

Hey everyone! We're back again to report on some things.

We've been working to upstream our vcpkg fork as much as possible. Today, a PR was merged that adds libid3tag, our version, to vcpkg upstream. In the next update of our fork, we can now remove our libid3tag port overlay! 🥳

tenacity,
@tenacity@fosstodon.org avatar

@citrusui that sounds like a new issue. Please report it so we can investigate.

tenacity, to random
@tenacity@fosstodon.org avatar

While we're working hard on Tenacity, we're also caring for libmad and libid3tag.

We have a 3 year old issue for integrating more patches from Perl's Audio::Scan module, version 0.62, here: https://codeberg.org/tenacityteam/libid3tag/issues/1. We looked at this issue again recently and want to proceed with this. However, we want developer feedback about what we should and should not change. Let us know what you think!

We have some exciting news: Tenacity is now officially packaged on Arch Linux in the extra repo! This package is maintained by @gromit. Now you can do sudo pacman -S tenacity and have it updated with your system.

If you are using the original AUR package, we recommend using the official package unless you want to continue testing git versions.

Hey everyone! You may have noticed our website went offline for a while and might still be down. That's because it's hosted on SourceHut Pages. As of late, SourceHut has been experiencing a massive DDoS attack which has unfortunately brought it down for quite a while. You can read more here: https://outage.sr.ht

Codeberg appears to also have the same issue, so any contributors might experience issues too. We're monitoring the situation and wish both the best in managing the situation.

Hi everyone! We recently became aware of OpenVINO AI-based effects made available for Audacity. You can look at https://github.com/intel/openvino-plugins-ai-audacity for more info. We wanted to say a few things:

  1. These effects are NOT shipped with Audacity. We don't know if they will be added later. At least the module is licensed under GPLv3, the same license Audacity uses. Some raised this concern.

  2. The modules are likely not compatible with Tenacity. They likely rely on newer Audacity internals we don't have.

(1/3)

tenacity,
@tenacity@fosstodon.org avatar

(continued 2/3)

  1. We aren't going to fork this module to make a Tenacity-compatible version. We want to focus on other things that require much more attention, such as our libmad and libid3tag forks.

We're always welcoming PRs that introduce newer Audacity internals, so any PRs backporting newer upstream work are certainly welcome. Also keep in mind that anyone's welcome to fork this module and make a Tenacity-compatible version, although we won't likely ship it with Tenacity.

tenacity,
@tenacity@fosstodon.org avatar

(continued 3/3)

We know that we haven't posted here in a while, but we figured that now is the time to say something about recent developments. We're also continuing to work on other things related in the background, so we're definitely busy!

tenacity, to random
@tenacity@fosstodon.org avatar

Here are some quick questions: do you disable built-in effects, and if so why? Would you support the decision to remove the ability to disable built-in plugins in 1.4?

tenacity, to random
@tenacity@fosstodon.org avatar

Are you a packager for an OS (e.g., Linux distro, BSD variant, etc) that packages Audacity, especially an older version? We're interested in working with you to package the latest version of Tenacity when it's out!

Packaging Tenacity should be very similar to Audacity. However, we have a new build system and almost all our dependencies have been devendored. Also see https://fosstodon.org/@tenacity/109400968706888042 for more info.

tenacity,
@tenacity@fosstodon.org avatar

@gromit @Freso @dvzrv Hello! Sorry for the late response. We've been lately with other stuff and weren't able to respond.

It turns out that the sums of each source package changed recently outside of our control. This might've been due to Codeberg's DDoS outage. A similar issue was reported here in vcpkg: https://github.com/microsoft/vcpkg/issues/36362

tenacity,
@tenacity@fosstodon.org avatar

@gromit @Freso @dvzrv Any tests that exist might be for older versions of Audacity, so they likely don't work for Tenacity. Therefore, there aren't really any tests for Tenacity right now.

tenacity,
@tenacity@fosstodon.org avatar

@gromit @Freso @dvzrv Also we apologize for not responding on IRC. Ever since the shutdown of Libera.Chat's Matrix IRC bridge, we haven't been as active on IRC.
