24.04 LTS is out, so it’s time for a little video review!
I looked at the desktop changes brought by GNOME 46, the Ubuntu specific changes and what’s under the hood, plus the few changes that happened in the official flavors (no 6 :( )

@MoriGM Probably not, because most Fedora changes generally only boil down to GNOME changes, compared to Ubuntu, which tends to tweak the GNOME formula a bit.

Since I already covered GNOME 46, I’m not sure it would really add anything!
There are underlying changes, of course, but there wouldn’t be enough for a full video!

7 Will go end of life in about 2 months, and this isn’t the usual EOL distribution: this time, it’s the entire distribution that is being shelved, without any upgrade path.

So I decided to take a look at why it’s a bigger deal than usual, and invited Joao Correia from TuxCare and the Enterprise Linux Podcast for an interview, to explain the issues in more detail, since they are experts about this.

I played a game yesterday with my golden boys vs my friend’s Salamanders.

That was my first win in 4 games with the Custodes (admittedly, pre-Codex), the game ended after my turn 3 and before his, as he basically had no way of scoring anymore, and I had a 24 points lead, so he conceded. That was a fun game, I lost a ton of models, he did too, a slugging match!
No weird secondaries to handle, just a good, fun game for a change!

@joshfowler Yeah, I’ll wait until we get the real points to make a judgement, but what seems annoying is the lack of replayability / flavor in the detachments.

I already got the AdMech codex to deal with, it’s insanely underpowered, but at least there is some flavor and some fluff to play with: you know you’re not going to do anything, but it’s fun! I hope it will be the same for Custodes :)

I also play Orks, so at least I’ll have that to fall back on 😂

If not, it has to become another crypto, because a world built on that kind of grift wouldn’t be worth it, IMO

People aren’t rational, they don’t do that. They’ll complain and groan and moan, but they’ll keep using the unethical nightmarish service if it’s snazzier looking and has 3% more performance.

@alexanderhay I will never understand why this is a big deal to begin with. Votann didn’t exist 3 years ago, now they’ve always been there. Necrons, Tau, they both were just dropped out of nowhere.
Big parts of the Horus Heresy were retconned as the books were written. Warhammer lore has always been unreliable and flexible.

Who cares? It’s more choice, it’s more potential fun, it doesn’t change how you play your army, or your power fantasy. Was it added gracefully? No. Is it important? No.

In this one, I try and give a few tips if your battery life on is giving you problems.
Not the usual “lower your brightness and shut down all network connections”, because that works, but it’s not really a solution :)

So, I tackle TLP (the easy way), GPU acceleration in the browser (seriously that’s a big potential drain), moving online video to H264 (not all GPUs can decode VP8 or 9) and more!

The more I play 10th edition, the more I think the game system is disappointing. I just find the « rule stacking » that is encouraged in this edition to be illegible when fighting your opponent.

Each unit has a special rule, their attached characters have special rules on top, your army and detachment add extra rules, and stratagems give even more variance.

@haui Oh yeah, there’s an app, but it’s for your army list, for the opponent, they tell you what they have at the beginning of the game, but it’s hard to figure out the combos.
For example, they’ll tell you « this unit has this weapon, and this character, they add rules X or Y », but then you have to memorize that this can be improved by their army rule, detachment rule, and potential stratagems they can use during the game. Super tricky to estimate what a unit can do!

@whynothugo Not sure, I don’t know Magic all that well these days!
The thing is, Warhammer got a major rules rewrite for 10th edition, and while it is simpler on paper, I think it didn’t progress in terms of legibility and understanding your opponent’s army (so, tons of “gotcha” moment even with good communication), and it lost a lot on the narrative side.

Feels designed for tournaments, not for fun friendly games!

@raspikabek I don’t mind the updates to the rules and books that much (I’m the prime sucker to buy a good looking book), it’s just that sometimes they reinvent things and make them un-fun :/

One page rules does look pretty cool, yeah!
