: what's your video game, anime or manga hot take? Like an actually scorching hot take that you actually believe and would cause controversy.

*As an example of the kinds of takes i mean, on the radio they did sports hot takes and 3 that came up were:

  • any NBA player over 6'7" could become a professional soccer goalie with only a month of training
  • an educated sports fan could do about as well as any professional GM at drafting 1st round picks over a 10 year span just by following general scouting rankings
  • a decently fit person could rush for 1 yard in the NFL with a good enough O line

@tobleh@sakurajima.moe avatar

@ami_angelwings I have three, depending on the kind of circle of anime fans that I happen to find myself in at a certain point in time.

  • Oshi no Ko is not that impressive of a show; it can't stop itself from just saying what is about to happen instead of just showing it just in case the viewer can't see what's directly in front of them, Hoshino Ai isn't really that endearing of a character so what happens to her doesn't really hit that much, Aqua isn't that respectable of a character either, and the show has a "sense" of "humor" that flops more than it hits.
  • Demon Slayer is boring. I tried watching it twice, and both times didn't really feel compelled at all to continue watching it with the furthest I got being episode 7; nothing that the show tries to say in those episodes seems interesting to me, with the only somewhat interesting thing being the fight scenes. From what I've heard about later episodes, any sort of message that the show tries to give is stuff that could be told in a much better way by much better or more interesting shows.
  • Phantom World is actually good. I do concede that the fanservice can be a lot, and can be too much for some people; but it must also be recognized that KyoAni has done LOTS of fanservice before and after Phantom World's airing, with some shows arguably even having worse fanservice - i.e. Dragon Maid (which, for the sake of clarity, I do like as a show overall). The show's attempts at being "meta" isn't clever by any means, but it more than makes up for it by being SUPER creative with its concepts for different phantoms that the characters have to fight, along with providing some really great personality, character development, and humor.

I'll mention it right at the start - I enjoyed my time watching "Musaigen no Phantom World". I enjoyed Phantom World despite it being considered one of, if not the worst work KyoAni has made in their modern catalog to the point of being considered "unwatchable technicolour vomit" by some anitubers out there.

Obviously, Phantom World does have its "quirks", to put it nicely. From the fanservice - which can (understandably) be too much for some people; to its not-so-subtle and not-so-clever attempts at being "meta" through referencing various tropes; a show that gets very episodic; a main story arc that that isn't remarkable; and a scenario that doesn't seem too special - A typical affair of students with special powers coming together to fight against rogue "phantoms", special creatures from human imagination that became reality and now live alongside humans, along with a mysterious organization responsible for those phantoms becoming reality. However, despite that, this show genuinely is enjoyable - not in an ironic "so bad it's good" way, but genuinely enjoyable.

The production and animation is the standard from KyoAni - that is to say it is VERY well done, with comedic scenes not being afraid to show off personality, and action scenes being engaging and exciting. The scenario of phantoms being based off human imagination leads to lot of creative phantoms in the show - going from disused electricity poles, to the figment of children's imagination, phantoms from childhood that come back to exact revenge, to phantoms born out of frustration or futility, and more! Phantom World comes up with very unique and interesting scenarios that made for very fun and enjoyable episodes - the episodic nature of the show really excels in this regard! I didn't mind dealing with the "Phantom of the Week" format when most of the phantoms in the show had a lot of charm and personality.

Furthermore, the show also provides gives a nice showcase of its main characters - showing off both Mai's toughness and softness, Reina's dynamic with her rich parents, Koito's introvertness, and Kurumi's connections with her favourite toy bear Albrecht; Phantom World does a nice job making this showcase nice and intriguing.

Phantom World is not Kyoto Animation's greatest work - that's a hard place to reach. However, it's charming enough where I think Phantom World is a good, enjoyable show - quirks and all.

Why can't this be automated? Like, do the behind the scenes hand off that is done when I click copy the url, then find it from my logged-in instance, and finally display the post so I can respond from my home instance - but without the copy, paste, search.

tobleh,
@tobleh@sakurajima.moe avatar

@oceaniceternity @Frances_Larina For what it's worth, there is a browser extension here that does this automation, at least with other Mastodon servers - it's available on for both Chromium-based browsers and on Firefox.

There is the caveat that the extension isn't actively maintained right now, but it works with most servers I've come across.

Furthermore - on newer instances (if you don't use the extension I mentioned, or if it skips a beat and doesn't automatically boost or favourite on your page), that pop up is slightly different. As shown in the screenshot I attached, you can just type in your account, and it'll send you back on your home instance to let you perform the action.

As for strategies as to getting stuff from Japan - from what I've heard proxy services like Buyee can store stuff that you buy from Japanese websites at their warehouse; so you can buy stuff for cheap from good deals on Mercari or Yahoo Auctions, have them stockpile at their warehouse, and wait until you have a sufficient amount of stuff where the cost of shipping is worth sending everything over to you.

tobleh,
@tobleh@sakurajima.moe avatar

@ami_angelwings The modern standard for the computer keyboard layout on a desktop traces its roots to the "IBM Enhanced Keyboard", otherwise known as the IBM Model M - one of, if not the most famous keyboards of all time, mechanical or otherwise.

Also, despite the common definition of "mechanical keyboard" in some circles excluding anything that uses membranes (to exclude the common rubber dome office/laptop keyboard), along with the Model M's reputation as being one of the most famous mechanical keyboards out there; the Model M itself uses membrane contacts as part of its operation - as shown in https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bucklingspring-animation-300ms.gif, the flapper flips down as the spring buckles to push together two membrane contacts together to complete the circuit and type a key.

An animated diagram of a buckling spring key switch, as part of IBM's original patent filing. As force is applied upon the key, a spring compresses more until it buckles. The buckling of the spring causes a flipper to slap down, causing a key press.

Despite a title that doesn't seem intersting, a character setting that sounds like it'll just be a generic marriage with a housewife, and a misstep with an early villain that feels artificially evil; this show has the ability to hook you in with a cute romance, some amazing animation and action sequences, and ESPECIALLY with Miyo Saimori's character arc of empowerment and personal growth. By the end, you'll likely be in the same boat as a lot of other people - eagerly awaiting the release of season two.

So many of the small artists and other creators that I follow on Twitter are moving to Blue Sky and/or Threads, so it all feels hopeless for the fediverse when people are so ready to reject it.

It took me a long time to find enough accounts to keep my feed active, but unfortunately it still isn't the same experience.

I don't mind it being more quiet here, but it's sad to know that any creators that I followed on twitter who don't create a tumblr, I'll never follow them again since they're moving away from the platforms that I'm on.

When drama happens but I don't need to make a new post, because I just boost an old one

tobleh, (edited )
@tobleh@sakurajima.moe avatar

@neatchee @pixel @bluecaller

I'm someone who used to have an account on tech.lgbt (where I migrated two months ago for non-drama/meta-related reasons), a person of colour, and I do agree with Neatchee's post regarding how we should deal with problem racist instances, and that being part of one disenfranchised group doesn't grant immunity from criticism for being a bigot.

However, I have a few reasons to believe that this act of defederation by mastodon.art (.art) may be insufficient at the very least, if not dubious.

My first point is purely anecdotal, so take from it what you will. I mention being originally from tech.lgbt because of how that might influence my view on this situation - but for what it's worth, I had never had ANY issues regarding how the instance was moderated for the time I was on that instance. Never. I've never had any issues with rampant racism on the instance, I've never witnessed anything that I'd perceive as "insufficient moderation".

Secondly, one of the big issues from .art is that one of the tech.lgbt mods had criticized a blocklist project (The Bad Space, or TBS for short) over perceptions of lack of accountability, here: https://tech.lgbt/@ShadowJonathan/111040123888700458

TBS is created by a black person on the Fediverse, and they regularly get hate sent on there from other people - so the mod who made the thread had later apologized for their posts and added an addendum to their thread, due to the possibility of harassment, as shown here: https://tech.lgbt/@ShadowJonathan/111046807738287793

Thirdly, one of the other big concerns that was mentioned in the rationale from .art and their affiliates involves a user from tech.lgbt who was abusing the report function to harass other users. Initially, the tech.lgbt moderators had only reprimanded the user, but they did later suspend the user after realizing that the comments within those reports had a lot of racist language.

Furthermore, points number 2 and 3, along with the few other concerns that .art had, have already been addressed by the tech.lgbt moderators themselves, in this blog post here - a post which I should mention was published a few days BEFORE .art went ahead with their announcement to defederate tech.lgbt: https://info.tech.lgbt/2023/09/15/addressing-concerns-rage-love-simcha-lgbt.html

Again, as I've already mentioned, there is a chance that my position as a former tech.lgbt user that had no issues with the moderation there is likely a bias, there is always a possibility that I might be missing something there; and ultimately, I will be understanding of the position that urusai.social (and my home instance, for that matter) will take. However, I am taking the time to write this post because I have reason to believe that the concerns of .art are based on insufficient evidence.

EDIT TO EDIT: I originally made an edit linking to posts by the Fediblock account - but with news of the person found to have been abusive/hateful/antisemitic, I've edited out those links. Apologies for previously linking said posts.

Was I born in the Philippines? No; out of pure happenstance, I was born in Canada.

Do I know how to speak Tagalog, Filipino, or regional languages? Unfortunately, aside from a few words I've adopted from everyday life (like baon, tabo, kumot, etc.), I don't have any fluency in any of those languages - expected when all of the people that I talk to outside of the home all speak English, and my parents mostly spoke English to me as a kid; just because you are born to Filipinos doesn't mean you're gonna automatically learn their language, it takes lots of socialization in that language for that to happen. I hope that I can learn it some day.

Have I experienced ignorant people insult the Filipino way of life? Yeah, I have one example of someone claiming that the tabo (a small pail of water we use in the washroom) was extremely unhygenic after reading only one article and without understanding how people actually use the thing. Also, the tabo (as far as I understand) is kinda similar to the lota, or a manual bidet that isn't hooked up to plumbing.

I've seen people on social media reject Filipinos due to the elections of Duterte and Marcos - despite the fact that the country experienced a massive misinformation campaign about the Marcos spanning decades, and the fact that there's millions Filipinos outside of the Philippines, and millions more children of Filipino heritage who have no practical connection to the Philippines or their country.

Of course I've also seen the "usual" Asian racism, the "usual" Asian stereotypes (even if they are good, they are still stereotypes that should be avoided!), the "usual" fetishization, etc; thankfully I don't think that kind of stuff has affected me personally? But I've still seen stuff like this.

There is also the stereotype of Filipinos going into nursing. I can't help there because I am a nursing student, but I'm sure my fellow Filipinos not in that field might've been peeved from assholes making fun of them for that, and also makes governments and media less likely to care about nurses from institutional racism and misogyny.

There's probably a few other things that I haven't mentioned that I've either forgotten or haven't personally mentioned.

Why haven't I brought up the fact that I'm of Filipino heritage more openly? I don't know, maybe because I was in spaces where I didn't feel as comfortable to be open about it, maybe I was afraid to have assholes attack me directly? Or maybe I'm been predisposed or encouraged by the authority figures around me to not be open or proud about some of the things that makes me, me? Or maybe I don't feel "authentic" as a Filipino because I'm not from the Philippines or fluent in a Philippine language, and would feel guilty supposedly "co-opting" the "Filipino" experience?

Either way, it is what it is, this is who I am.
