I've seen LOTS of great Hibike and Liz and the Blue Bird fan art in the lull between Liz and Chikai airing and Hibike S3 being 100% re-confirmed recently; plus I've seen stuff like Tamako Market and Hyouka consistently get more fanart - a few ecchi stuff here or there, but mostly cute SFW stuff!

Also, I second NaraMoore's suggestion to commission art whenever you have the money to do so - it's a great way to get art of you, or of a favourite character, doing whatever the artist is able to depict!

I'm kind of curious: did any cis white men on the fedi even notice the big conflict a bunch our communities on here just went through, the racist and transphobic things that spilled into people's feeds?

I ask because like, the cishet white dudes I follow on here seem to just be posting the same stuff they always do and no sense of anxiety, trauma, or concern in what they share.

It's not that I want cis white guys weighing in on this per se, it's just...I wish for all of us to have the privilege of the social media experience of the average cis white man. 😓​

(NOTE: Just to clarify, it appears a lot actually did see some of it but were only catching snippets and indirect comments, and did the right thing of not becoming that reply guy jumping into a fight they weren't a part of. Appreciate getting the perspective because it's hard to gauge what others experience on here)

@JoscelynTransient Can't give the white perspective (coming from a southeast asian heritage/background), but can give a cis guy perspective.

I did notice the conflict that happened. I didn't notice what I would see as racist/transphobic stuff spill into my feed, but I did see people feel very distressed about the entire situation, and I did hear about some of the shady things happening re: WP of .ART and TBS, and that has certainly soured my opinion of their moderation decisions/contributions a bit.

For what it's worth; I can empathize with not feeling welcome in a space - I have that feeling sometimes myself. And I feel disgust at the thought of people that I know - including people that I consider colleagues - feeling unsafe and unwelcome, or getting harassed.

On the other hand, I know that any contributions that I could personally have made wouldn't be appropriate, wouldn't be informed, and possibly not be welcome in the first place.

I mention this considering that there has been intersectorial conflict between Black people and Asian people (conflict that has been influenced by white people to prevent us from fighting them, but of which the anger is justifiable), knowing that Black people have experienced racist stuff from Asian people in the past, knowing that Asian people have experienced racist stuff from Black people in the past, etc.

I mention this ESPECIALLY considering my position as a cis guy - who, knowingly or unknowingly, has the inherent power to speak louder than and to push out trans people; from a conversation, debate, or out of "accepted society" altogether; due to being cis and a guy.

I mention this ESPECIALLY considering the possibility that the people directly affected could direct their anger towards cis men (and, might I add, RIGHTFULLY, JUSTIFIABLY, AND UNDERSTANDABLY so). As a symbol of the discrimination they experience, as a target to direct their anger towards due to not being able to directly affect bigoted institutions, or anything else that I could only imagine but never would be able to describe properly as a cis, Southeast Asian guy.

With all of those factors (and more), I thought the best course of action that I could have possibly done is to stay quiet, boost the experiences of any of my colleagues that I happened to see pop up on my feed, and listen to other people whenever I got the chance.

I'm not able to definitively say (nor should I claim) that's the right course of action to take for cis guys, but that's what I felt was the best course of action as it happened.

Gotta say, Mastodon slowly went from a bearable replacement to Twitter to a fairly competent one for me. A slow tricke of accounts to follow and new followers makes the platform feel much more alive now. I still find discovery way too slow and difficult, but I'm starting to feel at home here 🏡

@Techaltar Plus, there are upgrades happening which might make discovery a little bit easier - i.e. post searching has been added, meaning that if your instance is running a newer version of Mastodon, you can search a phrase like "iPhone" or "Android", and posts with that phrase appear 👀

@TurnrDev @alternativeto LibreOffice is free (both in cost and in being able to access/contribute/share), runs on every OS, and can work offline with local files.

And other options are available that also share those advantages that GDocs doesn't.

Are there any good "feminist" out there? It doesn't necessarily have to have overt philosophically themes (but it def can), just anime that have well-written, well-rounded leading women characters.

A lot of the anime I consume has mostly hypersexualized women characters (I don't go out of my way for that, it seems like it's just kind of a staple of the medium). For instance, I really like shonens, but they can be super fan-servicey. I'd like to shake that up.

I know there are some great Miyazaki characters, but other than that, I'm not aware of many others. are very welcome.

@fujiwara @NaraMoore From my own experiences printing stuff from Staples (which is a Canadian version of Office Max), at the very worst they don't really care all that much and just let you take the pictures; although what I usually did was order online and then pick them up when they were ready.

Hey y'all! I posted this in a conversation re: differences between instances; I just thought I'd go ahead and make it its own post from the perspective of a user - there's other technical differences for instance admins, but this is an end-user perspective.

So, different instances might have:

  • Different features (different character counts that may be higher than 500; emote reactions/favourites, different themes, markdown formatting for posts). From experience, different features from different instances have varying compatibility - i.e. Mastodon user favouriting Misskey/Firefish post shows as ❤️ reaction, Misskey user reacting to (vanilla) Mastodon posts counts on Mastodon as a favourite ⭐, Glitch-Soc Mastodon is inter-operable with both.

  • They may have a specific topic in mind. For example, hachyderm.io and tech.lgbt are tech and LGBTQ+ related; urusai.social and sakurajima.moe (my home instance 😉) has a focus on Japanese media discussion; mastodon.art is dedicated to art; kolektiva.social is political, anti-colonialist, left-wing.

  • Moderation and rules may differ. Some instances might have bigger moderation staff and/or have small userbase to moderate, and some may have different or additional rules. Some may be more strict on stuff (prohibiting AI unless tagged, no NFTs, stricter NSFW culture, etc), some may ban certain instances for whatever reason (mastodon.art is infamous - for better or for worse - for having strict defederating policies with the rationale of protecting their users). You can choose an instance you're comfortable with and makes you feel safe.

  • An extension of the previous point; the level of federation between different instances are different too, depending on what they're comfortable with handling. Instances can be completely blocked off, or they can be "silenced" and not appear on federated timelines (but can have people from different instances interact if they follow each other), have media rejected but other posts allowed through.

That's what I can think of off the top of my head when it comes to the differences between mastodon.social and other instances.

One more thing, DO NOT FORGET - this is a FEDERATED social network, that's why we call it the .

For example, if you have someone you know on mastodon.social or firefish.social or misskey.io; you WILL Be able to talk with them (unless your instance has completely blocked those instances). You may have to jump through a few hoops (putting the person's handle suffixed with @mastodon.social, or pasting a URL into the search box), or use extensions like FediAct (https://github.com/Lartsch/FediAct); but barring any restrictions or defederation, you shouldn't have any issues.

APOLOGIES FOR ANY ERRORS THAT I'VE MADE IN THIS POST! I'll give corrections when necessary!

@dameoutlaw It's something that's VERY light weight. You interact via a normal Mastodon app (like Tusky or Megalodon) or front-end (like Elk).

The biggest advantage is that if you want to make your own instance for yourself, it's VERY lightweight, so it doesn't take much to set up. There isn't really any instances for people to sign up to a GoToSocial, though.

Laid-Back Camp Season 2 finished. Just as super cute and comfy as the first season. 4.5/5! Gonna have to check out the movie soon.
