Hello, folks. I'm throwing this request out into the universe in the hopes that it can be responded to this week.

I picked up a freelancer/contract gig and I'm looking for an attorney who practices in British Columbia who can look over the contract for me. I'm willing to pay for up to one hour of someone's time to do this sometime during the next week or so. Are you the person I'm looking for? Boosts/reposts appreciated.

We did our best, and even though @devonblack did not win the nomination for the NDP candidacy for Saanich-Gulf Islands, we have learned a lot and will be ready for the challenges ahead.

On the plus side, I did get to meet Sascha Christensen, former candidate for #SD61 school board, who was pleased that I recognized him from the MTG Canadian Highlander community. I'd love to see more MTG folks need to get involved in local politics like that. #BCNDP

Okay, I've faffed about enough on Masto. If I ignore this tab, I might actually get some work done today. See y'all later.

Discord just announced a change to their Terms of Service, which restarts the clock on when you can opt out of binding arbitration. All you gotta do is read the "Opt-out" paragraph of Section 16 & send an email to arbitration-opt-out@discord.com from the email address you use to log in which states something as simple as this:

I am confirming that as of the date of this email, I am choosing to opt out of binding arbitration to settle disputes with Discord.

Boosts pls.

I am both intrigued and frustrated by today's reading recommendation by Dr. Susanne Thiessen via the IPAC newsletter. As a newcomer to Canada and also to the / discipline, I'd like to know more about specific instances where people have worked "in a good way" with Indigenous (First Nations, Metis, and/or Inuit) communities and compare them to times where they have not and what people can do to repair those relationships.

Wow, I'm really not having a good day today, am I? The belated reading recommendation today comes from Native News Online Kaili Berg's piece about the first-ever U.S.-produced Indigenous Fashion Week which will happen in May 2024 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

https://nativenewsonline.net/arts-entertainment/the-southwestern-association-for-indian-arts-announces-designer-line-up-for-indigenous-fashion-week

I am hopeful that with more Indigenous fashion designers getting more recognition and publicity in the world of high fashion, Indigenous designs from non-Indigenous designers will be come less of a "thing".

One benefit of being on this city council call this late at night: I get to see more toots from people in places like Australia and Japan as they're being posted rather than asynchronously when I wake up in the morning Pacific time.

Additionally, from the department of Organizations Which Forgot to Proofread Their Copy Before Publishing Their Website comes this screencap from a pop culture convention which is setting up shop in this April 2024. It's spun off of an existing convention called Northern Fan Con out of Prince George, BC, which is 16+ hours away by vehicle.

The fact that there seems to be no women on the non-profit society's Board of Directors is also troubling.

Today's late reading recommendation comes to you from a nap and the Patreon newsletter for SF/F author Cecilia Tan. In describing a recent talk she gave, she points to this essay she wrote in 2017 which proves most definitively that it is impossible to take politics out of the science fiction/fantasy genre. And I sincerely hope I don't spoil the essay as a whole by posting an enabled image of the closing paragraph in its entirety:

Going from the macro to the micro/personal, almost everything in this thread from @grimalkina rings true for people like me who have been in therapy for years, working to undo unproductive and/or ineffective habits that have led to self-sabotaging behaviour. A little change like setting an alarm to remind oneself to take their medicine at the same time every morning can go a long way towards improving one's overall health.

Just attended a bystander intervention training where the facilitators said that if you see someone practicing anti-Asian hatred in a forum or YouTube comments or on social media or wherever, it's best to intervene only when you know either one or both people in the situation well enough. 1/

Listening to the penultimate episode of the 20th year anniversary retrospective of @LoadingReadyRun, and I am forever appreciative of how much they actively want to entertain for and work with people who aren't absolute shitehawks.

I hate it when I have bad dreams because they seem really silly when I recall them in the morning, but while I'm in the middle of them, the situation is the worst thing in the world. Like last night.

I dreamed that I was with a mixed group of friends from the different areas of my life. Some of my immediate family members were there, too. We were in a queue for a ride at Disneyland, but the queue went on forever, and we kept holding up the line because we were so engrossed with talking. 1/

Finally finished this new post for my blog that I'd had waiting since either August or November, but hadn't had a chance to publish it due to finishing up my capstone project. If you're into the idea of gamifying how users learn about cybersecurity, you might want to check this out:

Despite the late start to the day due to investigating the filling that fell out of my mouth last week at the dentist's office, I feel productive. Before I start applying for jobs, I needed to clean up the website for my research project so I did that, and then I also noodled a bit more on an unrelated blog post for my site as well.

Now, it's time to eat and then either play video games or watch something with the hubs. If he's even off of work yet....

This morning's read is from IndigiNews again, talking about the land defenders who are attempting to halt the process of the TMX oil pipeline through lands which are considered sacred to the Secwépemc people.

If you're able, consider donating to help the authors and activists mentioned in this article complete the documentary about the efforts?

Hubs and I finally put up our Xmas tree it only took around 30 min. I will gleefully cite this post next year when he grumbles about doing it. I'm also really looking forward to getting a UVic-themed ornament when the bookstore opens up again.

I'm so glad that I have so much to celebrate for this winter holiday season.

Not controversial opinion: Executives who are headhunted to specifically turn a business around should be required to refund the company whatever signing bonuses they got if they resign before key measures are achieved; that money should be given to the employees in that executive's division as an apology for having their work lives disrupted by the ineffectual executive.

I love this news story from IndigiNews about a couple who met at a powwow, got to know each other, and then got married. Just as I imagine Indigenous folks met, got to know each other, and got married before colonization came to Turtle Island. https://indiginews.com/features/married-at-the-powwow-dancers-tie-the-knot-at-snpinktn-event-where-they-first-met
