Mom's settlement cheque arrived. A whole $5.86 - after $2 processing fee 😏

"The website says the lawsuit occurred after the personal information, including health card numbers, of 8.6 million customers was stolen.

Payments are much smaller than what was originally promised on the settlement approval notice, which was compensation of $50 to $150."

@msquebanh Yeah, that's just how class action lawsuits work. There was one time where we were supposed to get free Sunkist canned tuna and wound up getting a free coupon for specific tuna products that we ended up not liking at all.

If I had more funds, I'd get my blood work done at home to avoid going into the clinic. I have increased anxiety every time there's another appointment there. I'm usually the only one masked when I go. The clinic I am sent to is in a medical building's basement. Air ventilation is poor & hasn't been updated for years. I feel safer at my dentist's office than at blood clinic, xray clinic & any local hospitals.

Really wish govt invested in air quality mandates & brought back mask mandates too.

trishalynn,
@trishalynn@mastodon.sandwich.net avatar

@msquebanh I'm so sorry that access isn't great for you out there. And yeah, I'm also not happy that very few people mask these days, especially while waiting for bloodwork. When I went to see my nephrologist last week, I told them that I was glad they had theirs up still, and they mentioned that it's mostly for their immunocompromised patients.

Are there any #medical #scientists or #researchers or #neurologists doing any current studies on human #brain & #memory retention - specifically on maximum capacities of human brain memory storage & if there's a limit to how much we can store in our brains?

Like, if we build up many new memories, do we reach a point where some past memories are removed from our memory storage or is there no maximum limits to human memory storage?

These are things I wonder about & don't know enough about.

    @Robotron Thank you for the ear-worm and the flashback to the 1980s.

    I gotta say for me @thetransmitter is really knocking it out of the park as a very rare kind of publication that genuinely exposes non-experts to expert thinking in a highly complex area of science -- without flattening it for SEO or diluting it into dishwater blogposts (and believe me....I know what that looks, feels and smells like). I hope they flourish 💞

    @grimalkina @thetransmitter That sounded real interesting to me, so I signed up for their newsletter for self-learners. I totally appreciate that they have such a range of periodically updated newsletters with different topics and I may actually steal that idea to illustrate a concept for a presentation I'm giving at an MLA's office tomorrow.

    If I installed new server software that served websites 500% faster but also crashed sometimes, your first question would be "how frequent are the crashes?" and if I shrugged you'd back away slowly and start looking for my replacement.

    But with LLMs & hallucinations that's just normal operating conditions and you're a luddite if you ask too much about it.

    @trishalynn@mastodon.sandwich.net avatar

    @dalias @linc I agree with Rich's analysis. My spouse is a tech lead for an SRE team, and he is the most frustrated when the servers or network throw up infrequent errors. They make it that much more difficult to set up alerting on their dashboards.

    Now I will detail what I meant by "malpractice." This morning, sent out an using Mailjet, a third-party provider, asking for donations. Although the email has an one-click header (by Mailjet), in the email body, the actual unsubscribe link (by Mailjet) is obscured using black text on black background; instead, the instance admin says to delete your account to unsubscribe. This is extremely deceptive and I consider this a severe breach of trust.

    The same footer, but with everything highlighted. Additional text can be seen: "This e-mail has been sent to im@austinhuang.me, click here to unsubscribe. 11419 125 Street NW T5M0N1 Edmonton CA"

    You know what is the bane of my existence? The final paragraph or two of an essay. I sucked at conclusions when I was in middle school and secondary school and I suck at them still. I have ONE 👏🏼 SINGLE 👏🏼 PARAGRAPH 👏🏼 to write for my Master's paper. And I can't find it in me to do it. Help me, , you're my only hope. Post links to humanities/sociology papers whose final paragraphs rocked your world? Boosts appreciated.

    Will Ro buy a house eventually just to house all of his weird tech ideas and his own personal server farm?

    The finale of my birthday week presents is viewing a production of Pepe, a play about the life of José Rizal, a Filipino hero I never studied in high school, despite there being a day dedicated to the Spanish-American war. At least the teacher didn't shy away from media that depicted exactly how racist some of the U.S. politicians were at the time.

I'd like to make a donation to one of them in honour of my birthday and the stupid fucking protests happening across Canada, but I only have the budget to do one of them. Best thing I've read this morning is from a book I am quoting in the for my Master's project. It's from an author in the United States, and the context is that this is from an interview she did with a secondary school senior (at the time of the writing) about her experiences in one of the classes she liked the least, English. 1/

    Also, a while back, one of my co-follows and I were talking about the differences between "long-termism" and the Seven Generations Principle. I was just recommended this article from a former professor that I think is a good primer on what it is and why we need embed it more into discourse in the Western world:

    Okay, so here's something I never figured was a detriment to writing my paper: I type so fast (last clocked at 120 words per minute) that sometimes my word processor can't keep up and it freezes in the middle of a word.

    This is not an attempt to flex my typing fingers-er, muscles, btw. It's a legit complaint because it's interrupting the flow of my writing to have to pause every now and then to let Word sort itself out.

    : There will never be the perfect time for me to incorporate my physical therapy exercises into my day because I am not prioritizing it enough. Yet, this is also something I need to do for my health.

    But I also want to finish my frickin' Masters project so that I can finally begin the second phase of my professional career-life, and exercise tires me out too much.

    (No advice, just sympathy, please.)

    Taking a break from working on my research project to attend the nerdiest and priciest concert ever by at UBC in Vancouver. It's just me at this one, and hubs is at our hotel 1 hour south of me. Plus ferry and food? Yeah, considering they're from Australia, of course I was gonna attend this one.

    And I don't even normally enjoy classical music! Last classical concert I attended was actually an opera, in like 1995 or something.

Just as a quick update for y'all and everyone else, I'm trying to limit my social media these days to just browsing a little in the morning so that I can really get down to analyzing the findings for my research project (read more about it here: https://renken-sebastian.ca/speaking-across-barriers-2022).

    It's a longshot, but I thought I'd ask:

    Is there anyone else who has the Le Creuset French Onion Soup bowls and knows how to make sure that when you use the dishwasher, water doesn't get into the handle from the little hole at the bottom? That hole has to be there for a reason, so I don't want to cover it up. But even drip drying it in several orientations doesn't seem to work either. Help?
