Acermendax, to random French

À quoi reconnait-on l’expertise ?

tshirtman,
@tshirtman@mas.to avatar

@StillIRise1963 a lot of people suddently found their humanity regarding refugees* last year. Really hard to guess what was it about these particular refugees. Something about driving the same cars, i heard.

(well, some refugees, that didn’t change a whole lot for the "usual" ones)

Hey people.

Do you use ±infinity in your dates and timestamps? What is your use case? What would you do instead if they weren't available?

Please boost for reach.

tshirtman,

@truls46 ok, for this case, where indeed you want to express "does not expire" (like, a permission, or something immaterial of the kind), i do think it make sense.

I spent 11 days trying to quit but was unable to do so as the headaches were just too bad. So last week, last Thursday, I went back to drinking it again. However, the pain, which I thought would go away straight away, is still present.

Any advice would be welcomed. Xxx

tshirtman,
@tshirtman@mas.to avatar

@Geri as any detox, quitting cold is hard, for immediate pain, the classics (water + paracetamol, or stronger if you need & have), then reducing more slowly, some people mix with chicory while reducing consumption.

mcc, to random
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

Apparently in Python, slice() and range() are two different types. This is something else I somehow never realized despite having first learned Python in 2001.

…why?

Why are slice() and range() different, I mean
They're both a start, a stop, and a step

tshirtman,
@tshirtman@mas.to avatar

@scubbo @mcc ahah, indeed, looks a lot like it, though about looking it up, but felt lazy, nice digging!

edit: and nice to push that good answer to +500 with my vote :D

tshirtman,
@tshirtman@mas.to avatar

@cs @mcc yeah, i realized that after, hence my edit.

tshirtman,
@tshirtman@mas.to avatar

@mcc I read sometime ago a question about why python could so quickly if a number was in a very (very, very) large range, like

(completely random example)

>>> 29873192 in range(1, int(1e29), 4)
False
>>>

This is instantaneous. Because it doesn't have to iterate it, it knows what a range is, and it can quickly determine if that number is in or not.

A slice is more general and doesn't allow such optimization.
I don't know if it's the motivation, but it seems like a good reason.

tshirtman,
@tshirtman@mas.to avatar

@cs @mcc yeah, by that i meant that range have a definition that constraint more what can be in it, while a slice can contain basically any sequence of values.

But yeah, it's not such as one could be a subclass of the other.

edit: i'm probably making a confusion, between what they are (start, stop, step) and what they allow accessing, because indeed i never directly used them as an object, so sorry if this is misleading.

tshirtman,
@tshirtman@mas.to avatar

@ChateauErin @mcc huge documents are huge, but this is indeed not a good enough reason these days, you can put it into annexes, refer to it in a footnote, etc, just make sure there is a way to find it if you want/need to know. It's all digital anyway, it's not going to hurt to have more to look up.

Hope there was not too much actual screaming, just mildly stressful disagreement. 😅

lefrancmatombe, to random French

tshirtman,
@tshirtman@mas.to avatar

tshirtman,
@tshirtman@mas.to avatar

tshirtman, (edited )
@tshirtman@mas.to avatar

tshirtman, (edited )
@tshirtman@mas.to avatar

Me: "hm, there is no curl or wget in this image, and i’m not root, what can i use to download a binary, oh there is /bin/perl, surely downloading something with that should be possible"

perl: "get.pl died at line 4"

"Thanks really useful error message.

Ah, debugging is apperently done with -d"

next
next
next
next

"get.pl died at line 4"

Geez, I wonder why i didn’t learn this language before.

tshirtman,
@tshirtman@mas.to avatar

@mjgardner thanks for wanting to help, it’s not very important, i was just venting, the main issue is that File::Fetch doesn’t return a meaningful error message, and perl is exiting because the code i used use die $ff->error in case of error, i assume the cause is that it doesn’t find a suitable http provider (since neither curl or wget is present), and the "file not found error" is only visible through $!.

tshirtman,
@tshirtman@mas.to avatar

@eythian but i guess "die" is probably to be blamed here, but it does seem like $ff->error should be more informative.

tshirtman,
@tshirtman@mas.to avatar

@bahmanm weird "no such file or directory", but that’s helpful! Thanks.

The script i wanted to download also needs curl or wget anyway, i think we’ll try to get a better environment to work than that, too constrained, or at least get root to use apt-get, some more uglyness in the CI, yay!

Or become the maintainer of yet another image.

tshirtman,
@tshirtman@mas.to avatar

@popey good suggestion, but no, not present 😅.

tshirtman,
@tshirtman@mas.to avatar

@eythian that’s not really important, the code is an example from stackoverflow with many upvotes, and seems to match the documentation for the module.

use File::Fetch;
my $url = '<https://raw.githubusercontent.com/helm/helm/main/scripts/get-helm-3>';
my $ff = File::Fetch->new(uri => $url);
my $file = $ff->fetch() or die $ff->error;

I was told i could get the error using $! fair enough (turns out it’s "no such file or directory"), but a backtrace with a dump of the actual error would seem like a better default.

tshirtman,
@tshirtman@mas.to avatar

@mjgardner having a look, that might come handy, thanks. :)
