@twobiscuits@graz.social

Irish bloke living in Graz. An obsessive interest in bicycles and cycling will be apparent. Early Gen X. Sitzschaden. Begeisterter Pilates- und Physiopatient. Naturwissenschafter. Übersetzer. Radfahrlehrer. Fachtrottel in recovery. Has a fondness for software developers, but isn't one. Integrationsüberschuss. So long in Graz that all the pubs I knew at first have closed. Toots in English or German.

A welcome feeling has crept over me within the last hour, the feeling that maybe the arseholes don't get away with everything all the time. I shall savour it quietly.

On 9th May 1386 the Treaty of Windsor was signed between Portugal and England, uniting the two countries in a perpetual alliance.

It remains the oldest remaining alliance in the world.

In WW2 it would TWICE play a quiet but critical part in the allies' victory over the Axis, to the watching disbelief of Roosevelt and the Americans.

Here's how the treaty came about, was lost, almost got cancelled, then helped Britain in its darkest hour. /1 🧵 #history #histodons #portugal #uk

@garius footnote, i wonder if the fact that salazar and franco were of a clerical-fascist bent rather than an anticlerical one (mussolini, though he did come to an arrangement with the vatican, and hitler) was a factor in them staying neutral. see also: de valera, who decided at the last minute not to be a fascist, had an even more, if possible, holy catholic vision of his country, and was also neutral (with a few canny exceptions, implemented quietly).

Liebe ,

twobiscuits,

@sinnundverstand Wir hören gespannt zu! 😊

twobiscuits,

@sinnundverstand Sehr fein 😊

twobiscuits,
@twobiscuits@graz.social avatar

Die Pilates-Einzeltrainings waren fantastisch. Da hab ich gelernt, Muskeln anzusteuern, die ich noch gar nicht kannte. Und der sachlich-freundlich-zuversichtliche Umgang der Trainerin mit meinem Bewegungsapparat tut auch psychisch gut 🥰

This is the start of the Day 07 thread

I’ll post the video and data as soon as I can, but the mobile network is patchy here in the train near Verviers

But I’m 😡🤬 this morning. Because of Deutsche Bahn, and then the German police…

@carlosfroh @fedibikes_de Lohnen tut sich das prinzipiell schon. Eigene Erfahrungen habe ich nur im Friaul (Cormons-Gorizia-Palmanova-Cividale) und um Grado. Grundsätzlich sehr nett. Du denkst vermutlich südlich von Triest, da weiss ich dass es zB die Parenzana-Route gibt, kenne sie aber nicht.

I know I have some folk following me, and tourist sites are awful for finding this sort of info:

Does anyone have recommendations for places that are on a train line, are relatively quiet, have beautiful scenery (ideally some ancient woodland) and a bunch of places to walk (not necessarily Named Routes) for, say, four or five hours?

twobiscuits,
@twobiscuits@graz.social avatar

@kapellosaur you could do worse than Blair Atholl (walk up a little bit of Glen Tilt), Bridge of Allan, or for more coastal scenery there's an excellent walk from Arbroath towards Auchmithie

@crazy2bike @carlosfroh @fedibikes @fedibikes_de Jein. Kommt darauf an. Was ich im Bild sehe ist ein Endstück, das sich im Bremsarm drehen würde, und wenn das gut funktioniert (geschmiert halten), reicht ein dünnerer Seil, lt. Jan Heine https://www.renehersecycles.com/straddle-cables-done-right/

twobiscuits,

@enobacon if you can, I'd cut it to length.

twobiscuits,
@twobiscuits@graz.social avatar

@enobacon i'm the cut it already guy. I can't have exactly the right length screws for everything, I have a routine for cutting them down.
I often put that one in the other way round, but sometimes there isn't even room for a low-profile head on the inside of the dropout.

    A while ago, a fellow translator here was looking for other translators to follow. It’s been 5 months since her post, so I thought I’d ask the same thing: translators, where are you? Boost if you know any translators or professionals working in the translation industry. I’d love to meet fellow translators here so we can get discuss our routines, our joys, CPD, and everything in between.

    @Renata @translators I started it a couple of years ago at the insistence of herself (who is a lecturer in an English dept & teaches English teachers) & I have basically developed the course out of the hobbyhorses I had collected in my brain from 20 years of translating & editing stuff by German speakers. Also borrowing ideas from Joseph Williams & Gregory Colomb. >

    twobiscuits,
    @twobiscuits@graz.social avatar

    @Renata @translators My students are software developers, their English is generally quite advanced, but what they're missing is what it takes to make a coherent paragraph in English. Heading for the 4th run of the course this fall, I hope I've got it worked out now. It's been a bit chaotic & experimental so far 🤪

    twobiscuits,
    @twobiscuits@graz.social avatar

    @Renata @translators I hope to turn the basic course concept into something I can offer to company clients. What was my normal translating business is more or less comatose atm; I want to relaunch it in a much more targeted way. >

    twobiscuits,
    @twobiscuits@graz.social avatar

    @Renata @translators People usually look for a translator too late in their project cycles. Everything is done & dusted & then they want the translation quickly. I'm bound to be an expensive, complicated pain in the ass at that point. I have to get to ppl in a phase where they're not thinking about ordering a translation yet, & get into a conversation about how English texts need to be different if they're to work well. >

    twobiscuits,
    @twobiscuits@graz.social avatar

    @Renata @translators The ideal job might be if they will let me work as an English-first copywriter (with briefings in German); that's high value and actually faster for me than struggling to rescue something out of a German text that's already been signed off ... <>
