Today's dinosaur: a pair of sandhill cranes screaming at a hawk that had the audacity to land on the lawn 100s of meters away.

Cranes, you're bigger and buffer than the hawk...

SCRATCH THAT they have a baby
I repeat
They have a baby!!

Scream away, cranes! Keep your colt safe!

4/8/24

Today's dinosaur report: the sandhill crane family did some early morning yelling, which may or may not be related to the following:

  • A wild turkey (?) wandered nearby and possibly took a dust bath before hopping a fence and heading into our neighbour's yard

  • A hawk sat on the far side of the pond and very patiently plucked something vaguely gray and fluffy. Could not tell if that was fur or feathers.

A dark stocky bird that might be a wild turkey perches on a fence separating a pond from a lawn.

On the the far side of a pond, a hawk stands in the grass surrounded by greyish fluff.

4/9/24 Dinosaur report - I didn't see much of the sandhill crane family until the afternoon, although the solo turkey did show up in the morning and wander past our house.

But! I did have an exciting non-dinosaur sighting! I'll tag it as "sensitive" for anyone who doesn't like snakes or bad photography.

4/10 Dinosaur Report: Maybe the wild turkey and the sandhill cranes have reached an agreement of some kind? The turkey spent some time foraging in the field, then switched off with the crane family.

4/11 Dinosaur Report: More early morning keening from the cranes. I couldn't see them but their cries were very loud. It was a relief to see the baby safe and sound.

There are strong winds and thunderstorms forecast all day. The cranes seemed to be taking shelter under the trees.

A photo of a family of sandhill cranes taken through my office window. One crane is standing straight while the other bends down to look for food. In the foreground, my office clutter can be seen... A round plush cow is sitting between the PC screen and tower.
A close-up of the sandhill crane colt and its parents on the lawn. The grass is so tall and the young sandhill crane is so small that it is almost hidden when it sits in the grass.

4/15 Dinosaur Report - I slept in this morning and didn't get good photos, but the sandhill crane colt is visibly bigger and getting leggier by the day.

Photos by my husband, who didn't sleep in and has a better camera than me.

Listening to this ... Have a listen to it if you have breasts ... Hugs ... I had my first mammogram last year, it was a pleasant adventure ... I was treated nicely, it didn't hurt, it was just like getting squeezed for a few seconds ... The nurse told me it is about 10% that find it unbearable ...

@melissabeartrix I have dense breast tissue and not especially bountiful breasts, so mammograms are always painful for me. But I recognize that they're an important step in my healthcare, so I still get them done.

A while back, I had an epiphany when I realized that the Korean yujacha that my friend was recommending was almost certainly the same as the Japanese yuzu honey drink that my grandma used to prepare for us. I spotted some of this concoction at the Asian supermarket, where it was labelled Citron tea, and I thought: Aha, so "citron" is English for "yuzu".

Today, my reality has been shattered by the new knowledge that although 柚子 is Japanese for "yuzu", it's Chinese for "pomelo". Furthermore...

twotone,
@twotone@wandering.shop avatar

(cont'd)

Yuzu/yuja is actually distinct from citron (マルブッシュカン marubusshukan or 枸櫞 kuen in Japanese) AND pomelo (ブンタン buntan or ザボン zabon in Japanese).

I know citrus fruits have a complicated family tree, but still!

Normally I'm thrilled any day that I learn a new thing, but this is a bit overwhelming.

The Great Pottery Throwdown is so good. I think I like it better than the GBBO. It is cozy while also being quietly, fiercely, progressive

twotone,
@twotone@wandering.shop avatar

@janellecshane It's inspirational. It both makes me want to try my hand at pottery AND become the kind of person who can be moved to tears by beauty. And it helps me feel like I'm learning, too, which GBBO hasn't done in years.

Twice in the past few months, I have received something identified to me as a "friendship bracelet" that did not look like the friendship bracelets I was familiar with. I'm wondering if it's a generational thing or a regional thing or what, and to that end I'd like to do an unscientific poll.

First, the bracelets.

Two bracelets made by stringing beads on a stretchy nylon cord. One has big chunky beads and the word WOTEF on it. The other one has smaller pink and blue beads and the word Mud Mermaid.

@twotone@wandering.shop avatar

For folks who identify as Gen X or older:
Please look at the images above. Which would you refer to as a "friendship bracelet"?

If you know these bracelets by any other names, let me know in the comments!
And please boost for visibility!

Look,

I sew, knit, crochet, macrame and kumihimo. I understand those things.

Still, I look at Quilts and Spun yarn, and freehand Embroidery, and Amigurumi - and my brain screams 'WHAT MAGIC IS THIS!?'

What yarn / thread-craft makes your brain go 'boing' despite knowing how the fundamentals work ?

[Yes I know Amigurumi is knitting / crotchet but it's also structural sculpting which is different to flat piece or loom knitting]

twotone,
@twotone@wandering.shop avatar

@Faintdreams definitely spinning for me.

What the heck? You just take this fluffy cloud stuff and convert it into yarn I can knit with? What are you, some kind of Rumplestiltskin?

Jan. 6 musings from an ancient tiki.

People with personality disorders have a gravity to them. It keeps everybody spinning around them. Extreme example, but my dad went to his deathbed insisting I was the reason we were estranged, and not that mom was just plain nuts.

It's harrowing to observe Tr*mp capture a good portion of my countrymen in his death spiral. So many fellow citizens would rather their country fall into fascism than admit dude is stark staring bonkers.

twotone,
@twotone@wandering.shop avatar

@tikistitch everything since The Former Guy became president has been a demoralizing display of how some people are completely detached from reality, and other people are willing to let a dangerous person be in charge as long as they think they can profit or benefit in some way.

Maybe that's the way that it's always been, but I feel like it's never been so flagrant and obvious as in the past 8 (?!) years. And January 6 has only made this clearer.

Last night, I tried out my new sleep mask with Bluetooth ear phones. I found some white noise (and pink noise, and brown noise) playlists on Spotify and decided to give the brown noise one a try, since that allegedly helps with tinnitus as well as sleep issues.

Unfortunately, I didn't think about the fact that Spotify is ad-supported, so every few hours my soothing "howling Antarctic winds" noises were interrupted by ads for podcasts.

Tonight, I'm going to try a real white noise app by TMSoft.

We went out for lovely Xmas dinner last night in a restaurant overlooking the bay. There was an adorable baby at the table next to us, plus a cute little girl. When the family was getting ready to leave, the girl buzzed very close to the lit candle on our table, and we were both, "Oh no, be careful!" The dad chuckled and told us she was fascinated by the candles - since everybody had a lit candle, she assumed it was everybody's birthday! And I LIKE HER WAY OF THINKING.

I’m often sad I don’t have more friends. Yes, I hate people, but I never said I was consistent.

This evening, we sat in the lobby, drinking wine alongside two young, attractive couples. They ignored us, which was fine. One girl exclaimed that she’d NEVER been on a TRAIN before, OMG! Then the discussion turned to a friend who had SO MANY PRODUCTS.

She planned to visit Monserrat, where we’d just been.

But she kept calling it Mon-sir-RAY.

And that’s why I don’t have more friends.

twotone,
@twotone@wandering.shop avatar

@tikistitch I grew up a voracious reader with English as a Foreign Language parents, so I've spent SO much time thinking "wait, what did that person say? Are they wrong, or have I been pronouncing that wrong all my life? Surely nobody would ever be that wrong THAT confidently???"

All of this is to say: there are so many different paths to "... And this is why I don't have more friends", but I'm grateful for the ones that I do have.

The Marvels was a fun movie! I laughed out loud at some parts and cried at others. Loved it, and I feel like they did a good enough job summarizing things from related movies and TV shows that you can enjoy the film even if you haven't watched the Disney+ shows...

Although it might help that I've had decades of experience reading comics where characters casually reference adventures they've had in other comic book series.
