Its been a while since I posted a Vaporwave Pinball update so here is the latest.

TLDR:
a 2 hour game about playing LoFI pinball in weird liminal spaces, for less then 5 bucks.

I've had a good day of gamedev on Seconds of sand!

-Made a new Brick texture set
-Started a modular set I can build courses with
-Made a master shader for the ruin assets (with a depth blend so they look like they are in the sand)
-Made a vertex colour skybox shader

I've been thinking about a way to utilize photographs with procedurals to really make use of all the details photos get (inspired a lot by Ian Hubert) and so jammed some stuff out today!

First up, using photos of individual bricks in material maker to create a wall texture.
The result is ugly (only used a few bricks!) But as a concept, it's promising.

Next, I wanted to test another idea I'd had about using splatter/scatter nodes to procedurally place hand painted assets.

I used photo pea to rough paint out a single blade of grass and then spread it around, again in material maker.

Diffuse only but I think this gets you to "good enough" very quickly

Next up, I wanted to test an idea about using hand painted height maps in material maker. Whilst photo pea images aren't the right format/not depth , for another "good enough" and quick result, I was pretty happy.

What is great about this is that it's super quick to get variations. This result is just different values on X & Y and less scattering.

The real magic happened though when I decided to play around with the contours of the shape I made in photo pea. Because I'm using image effects, I can change the height map very quickly for some gnarly effects.
Again, same nodes, just a different PNG/ contours

The last test I did was another contour test - I tried a more organic ring shape and ended up with this potentially fleshy looking result.

I'm very excited to try more combinations especially for hellscreen.
