Hmm… when I open an Apple II disk image in Disk Jockey, it shows the folders and system files, but not any of the HyperCard stacks or the HyperCard IIGS application.

There goes my attempt at examining a IIGS stack using Hex Fiend to see if it's the same as a Mac stack.

If there's an iPhone or iPad app in the app store that is not selected for using on M1+ Macs, is there a way to run it on the Mac anyway?

Weird, I thought Combine's Cancellable would guarantee that when a Cancellable is freed, it implicitly triggers cancel().

But I can't find that mentioned anywhere in the (sparse) documentation (https://developer.apple.com/documentation/combine/cancellable).

Anyone remember where that's documented? Or am I hallucinating?

Update: Yup, #5 trending hashtag right now, lots of people have this.

TIL that the screwdrivers are named after Henry F. Phillips and are therefore spelled with two Ls and one P.

The Dutch electronics company is spelled Philips, with one L and one P.

You're telling me that not only did Apple decided to run this stupid "crushing it" commercial, they ripped off an old LG ad ???

I take it the “run macOS on an iPad” situation is still “should technically be possible, some people managed it, but a truckload of work to make work in practice”? Or is there something like the jailbreak installers of old that make it risky but straightforward?

Short reminder that someone’s GitHub profile does not say anything about their past successes or how much work they get done (there is such a thing as a private account and a work account, too):

TIL that the Swiss canton of Jura was only established in 1979.

I'm young enough that I do not remember a time before the current 26-canton Switzerland.

(Think of a canton as a "state” in a larger country, like Montana or whatever)

I don’t suppose anyone has reverse-engineered the old 90ies Apple DocViewer file format? I know someone decoded THINK Reference, but I'm kinda hoping that DocViewer will be better than PDF for extracting structured info from Inside Macintosh.

Sadly there's an MS Word display app called “DocViewer”, so web search is kinda difficult.

Hey, is there any way to add a range check to a SwiftUI TextField?

I have an

struct MyView: View {
@ State var intValue: UInt16

var body: some View {
TextField("UInt16”, value: $intValue, format: .number)
}
}

and if I enter “-1” or “65537” into the text field, it calls fatalError() trying to convert the user-entered text into a UInt16, and I'd rather it just beep than crash the app on invalid user input.

@dave That "run the visuals for your show" tagline in Waiting for Review 4x12 is great!

One of my pet peeves is when devs just post "I just released Frobozz 2.0" on socials and I may be on the road and have to decide then and there whether to make the effort to note this down.

If they just added a tagline like this to any mention of their product, I'd immediately know whether it's US tax software I don't need, or DJing software I could use for the next party. I'd never miss a good one.

Why do modern devices refuse to even start up when plugged into power until you’ve charged them to like, 20% ?

Can't you just trust that I won't pull the power cable and let me start using it?

Fun Fact: “donation" is a specific legal term that is protected in many countries. Many people colloquially call any amount of money that you get without having to do something specific in return a “donation”. If you do that in public (e.g. on web sites or broadcast video like Twitch or YouTube) you get in trouble in most countries, because you must be an accredited charitable organization to be allowed to ask for donations.

You may, however, solicit tips in many places.

I wonder if the kind of people who complain about people looking too much at their phones would complain less if it was more visible what you're doing. Smart phones have basically compressed a whole bunch of big gestures telling everyone what's up into pulling out and using one's phone for 30 seconds.

  • Pulling out a map
  • Pulling out a travel guide/dictionary
  • Openly or covertly glancing at your watch
  • Pre-counting some amount of money
  • Pulling out your tickets and keeping them in hand

Idly wondering on the walk home:

What are the best Linux laptops these days? All hardware supported, great battery time (~10 hrs), 14” 1080p, great trackpad, USB-C Power delivery support?

And is there a machine like that with a gaming GPU that’ll run current games at normal or better (for dual-booting Windows, I know WINE/Proton exists, it’s not enough for me).
