@macrumors I wouldn’t recommend the base 8GB model unless you’re intending to just do web browsing (without lot of tabs), email, word processing, basic photo editing. Your needs will likely outgrow the base model within 2 years.

For Apple laptops, I think minimum spec should be 16GB RAM + 512GB Storage. This helps keep your laptop useful for ~5 years (if you don’t want/need to upgrade for more performance) for an average user who isn’t doing a lot of video editing or software development.

I’ve got a great product idea for Apple. It’s a market that can bring in recurring revenue through consumables. One that has a variety of existing poor products with bad user interfaces, buggy software, and privacy issues.

Printers.

The MacBook Air's famous wedge-shape design is no more, replaced by the square-sided M3 model. Long live the sloped MacBook Air.

@appleinsider Apple needs to bring back the 12” MacBook with an M3 chip. This would be the ultimate ultra-portable laptop!

Bonus points if they also added a touchscreen!

What level of fine would actually make a difference to Apple? $2bn clearly isn't enough, and the same people who presided over and caused this are still in charge. It needs to be a career-ending fine, to root out the bad actors and force a real change in behavior

In other Apple news, it seems like they're actively adopting the term 'AI' this year, having ignored it previously. The seal now broken, I imagine 'AI’ will be used heavily in iOS 18’s marketing

@macrumors Finally MacBook Air supports 2 external displays but you have to use it in clamshell mode for that. I guess that’s progress but it still feels like BS because all Wintel laptops can easily do 2 external displays while allowing the laptop screen to be used at the same time. This display limitation still feels like Apple is trying to force an upsell to MacBook Pro for no good reason other than profit mongering.

Pundit opinion of iPad is in a nosedive, in a year where even ports of Final Cut and Logic couldn’t save it.

iPad is scoring lower than the Mac did in 2016 with the butterfly keyboard debacle, and iPad doesn't even have a debacle to blame.

It's gonna take a lot more than an OLED screen and a spec bump to make me feel about iPad like I used to; I have no clue where iPad is going anymore, and neither has Apple.

@stroughtonsmith There’s nothing Pro about an iPad Pro!

I was excited when Apple announced iPadOS until I realised it was basically just iOS renamed. The iPad hardware (especially with M series chips) is great, but the operating system is hot garbage for my use case… I just can’t justify spending so much money on a crippled computer platform.

macOS rules - give me a touch-screen MacBook Air!

@jamesthomson At the end of the day the joke’s on us if we all continue to pay for these services as they enshitify them with ads and lower their value for money while raising the prices. The only clear message we can send these greedy corporations is to stop buying their products!

Problem for most of us though is that we’re addicted to their content and they know it!

In a world where nobody really cares about running Windows anymore, consumer virtualization solutions like VMWare are going the way of the dinosaur. I imagine VMWare Fusion's sales dropped off a cliff when the Mac moved to Apple Silicon

https://www.theregister.com/2024/02/13/broadcom_ends_free_esxi_vsphere/

vanitalo,
@vanitalo@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith VMWare no longer cares about the consumer market, they’re busy trying to squeeze every dollar they can out of their enterprise customers.

Parallels Desktop runs Windows 11 ARM 64 on Apple Silicon better than most native hardware (at least for productivity software). I only need Windows for running some proprietary Windows only development software for work, otherwise I wouldn’t bother with Windows at all.

When Apple remembers to make new iPads again (any day now.), one thing I'd really like to see is an end to the baby apps. I don't want a stripped-down, half-assed 'iPad experience’ for anything. It's been fourteen years and I'm so over it. Give me real desktop-class apps across iPadOS and visionOS, feature for feature, that can scale all the way up to power a 5K External Display or spatial computing workstation.

A reorderable toolbar doesn't make for a 'desktop-class app’.

vanitalo,
@vanitalo@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith I agree, but I won’t be holding my breath. When Apple started putting M series chips in iPad Pro, they should have added desktop class capabilities to the OS and the apps. I hope visionOS doesn’t suffer the same stagnated fate.

Users of the Apple Vision Pro can see the display of their Mac from within the headset, after you have connected the two. Here’s how to virtually supersize your MacBook Pro or desktop Mac’s screen.

@appleinsider It sounds like this feature will need a lot of enhancement before it will be useful for people who have workflows that incorporate multi-monitor Mac use.

As it will only virtualise the main Mac display in a multi external display setup, what happens to anything that was displayed on other external displays? Does it consolidate all app windows to the main display when connected to  Vision Pro?

I’m not as pessimistic about EyeSight (and Personas) on Apple Vision Pro as many seem to be. Just think about other features that started rough but gradually became great: Portrait Mode, Live Photos, even FaceTime itself. Just because this tech isn't perfect on day one, I don't think it should be immediately discarded.

vanitalo,
@vanitalo@mastodon.social avatar

@michaelsteeber I’d like them to continue to improve it, but I’d also like an alternative SKU that doesn’t have it as it would make the headset lighter and cost less.

I keep seeing it floated that 'if you have a million users, and you don't have a way to make money, what are you even doing?’, which is incredibly toxic. Screw everybody who provides free software/tools, I guess?

I guarantee you every single one of you relies on software that has more than a million users and makes $0, somewhere in your tech stack.

Having a single app like that in your portfolio, even if you have robust paid apps, could be enough to bankrupt you under Apple's CTF proposal

vanitalo,
@vanitalo@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber @thomholwerda @stroughtonsmith If the EC does that they can expect a lot of complaints from EU citizens & companies. Apple may have complied with the DMA on paper, but effectively their new terms just force the status quo for 99% of developers. Only the wealthiest 1% would take on the risk of the new terms (the CTF) and Apple will make billions off them. This is a “Kobayashi Maru” for consumers and indie developers. EC may have been naive, but Apple is taking advantage.

I very much hope Apple does build some input accessories or accessory specs for visionOS. I want to see an Apple Marker I can draw on Freeform with, a scroll/zoom/click 'puck’ I can use in public instead of hand gestures, and proper hand controllers for gaming
