ok look I know this is really stupid and pedantic, but come on, we’ve had 26 years to learn this

It's Wi-Fi

not Wifi or WiFi or wifi or wi fi

Wi-Fi. Hyphenated. Both words capitalized.

thank you for coming to my ted talk

(while you're here, “log in" is two words when being used as a verb… your login button or link should not say "login”, because the action they take is to "log in”)

Almost got scammed selling some stuff online. 🤙

Had a person send me their number as an interested buyer and told me to text them. I did (first mistake), and we arranged a meetup time. Then they asked if, for their safety, they could send me a six digit code (some of you already know where this is going) that I could repeat back to them to verify myself.

I said, "absolutely!" And sure enough, I got a Google Voice verification number. lol

If you're not familiar with the scam, shady people will take your phone number and try to create a Google Voice account with it. If you provide them with the 6-digit code that Google sends you, they can "verify" that they are you, and then basically use your phone number to run scams, commit fraud, etc. It's nasty business.

I called them out, blocked them, then reported them to the marketplace website and to the FTC--though, almost certainly, they were using the phone number of another poor soul to carry this out.

I used to work as a social engineer, running phishing campaigns (ethically, with consent lol), against Fortune 1000 companies to assess their level of vulnerability. Luckily for me, I was super familiar with this, but most of the people I told about it have said, "Oh, I probably would have fallen for that...", and even I set myself up for it.

So that is why I'm posting this. Please be aware of sketchy shit like this. If someone is asking you for a verification code over SMS or email, tread with EXTREME caution. Also, it's usually pretty shady if a stranger you're already chatting with wants to move to a new platform. Not always, but if someone emails or messages you on Facebook to ask you to text them, that's a little weird. I'd had legitimate buyers/sellers do that, so it's not unheard of, but it should put you on guard.

If you buy/sell/trade online frequently, it's a good idea to use a dedicated MySudo number, VOIP number, and/or a burner phone for that.

Stay safe out there, kids.

@vanitalo@mastodon.social avatar

@JustinDerrick @ADHDefy Now there are deep fake AI scammers who record people’s voices when they answer scam calls so that they can then synthesise your voice and call other people you know using your voice to try and scam them. So it’s not recommended to engage with scammers at all anymore, don’t answer calls from contacts you don’t know or hang up immediately as soon as it starts to feel like a scam call. My voicemail message is spoken by Siri 😎

Being honest with myself, I'm not going to be building anything for visionOS until/unless I have a headset of my own, and the chance of me buying the €4000+ first-generation device is near-zero. I'm already burned out on visionOS just thinking about it over the past few months; at this point I don't plan on revisiting the SDK until after launch. I don't think anybody will miss my apps not being there for the first year or two, and that probably goes for most indie devs too

vanitalo,
@vanitalo@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith @chockenberry Yep, I would have preferred visonOS to be a closer fork of macOS… I think that would have had greater potential. I fear that visonPro will constantly hit the same walls that iPad has, and that will make the product less useful for me. 😔

This new lower-cost Apple Pencil is very much aimed at students and schools, not artists. Though I don't envy any teacher who has to recharge 30 styluses via USB-C every week

I interpret this as Apple opening up a space for an 'Apple Pencil Pro’, as this new USB-C model is very much lesser than the 5 year old Apple Pencil (2nd generation)

iPad feature I'd love: deep sleep. I find whenever I go a few days or a week between using an iPad, it's often dead or almost dead. An auto-deep sleep mode after 24 hours of non-use would be awesome, even if it took 5 seconds or so to wake back up

@appleinsider I really wish lawmakers weren’t so technically inept! 🤦‍♂️

I doubt the average Australian citizen who uses Apple Pay wants this. It’s more likely the big banks lobbying to stick the🔪 into Apple because they opposed Apple Pay in favour of their own bogus solutions for age’s, even though their own customers were demanding access to Apple Pay and didn’t want to use the Banks native and inferior options.

Question! Is there a Mastodon app that lets you pre-write a few messages in a chain, and then post them all at once? I’m so used to doing that on Twitter for bigger ideas, and I don’t want to have to rapidly reply to my own message to then type the second part. Or, is that like philosophically not good on here?

vanitalo,
@vanitalo@mastodon.social avatar

@cabel @conlan @outadoc Most Mastodon apps I’ve used do have a show more function for posts that are longer than 500 characters, some allow finer configuration. I’ve seen instances that allow 1000 characters and a few that allow even more.

I think around 1000 chars is the sweet spot, would be nice if Mastodon would officially increase the default limit.

Threaded long posts work, but they’re clunky and often 500 characters is just a tad too restrictive to get out a well formed post.

vanitalo,
@vanitalo@mastodon.social avatar

@matthewcassinelli @ryanashcraft Apple just doesn’t seem to put enough resources and care into continual improvement of Shortcuts in general. The shortcuts editor is an absolute sh!tshow to use when trying to edit long complicated shortcuts & you need to move things around to refactor it. This stuff has so much potential, but Apple just doesn’t seem to care enough about it. 😔

My biggest gripe with widgets atm is when they sometimes don’t refresh after I update something in their linked apps.

@9to5Mac What’s the difference between Private Access and Limited Access?

When selecting Limited Access in settings it asks to select the photos, but I’m wondering if it’s possible to not select any in settings and then select different photos each time from the picker when in an app.

It doesn’t appear possible to manually set Private Access in settings, this seems like something iOS 17 does for some apps only. 🤷‍♂️
