Idiotic use of capacitive switches in the kitchen, part 2:

If you have an oven with capacitive switches above the door, and you bake a moist food on a cold day, the steam will condense on the controls and randomly trigger them.

I am a firm believer that capacitive controls should be banned in kitchens on safety grounds. This is not the first time they've fucked up in my household by a long chalk.

you gotta look at the flooding in the Esk Valley and assuming it's all gonna happen where you live too -- maybe not flooding, but climate change smashing your home, family, everything

but hey, keep using that AWS, keep buying things made with coal like steel, and keep burning petrol.

we know there are good reasons you personally can't stop, but at least sharpen the guillotines and stop worshipping billionaires.

Anyone know why so many of the YouTube ads for kiwi companies have the same kind of "oh were so quirky and weird haha" vibe?

I assume they are all using the same marketing company. Or maybe that it's just currently in vogue to pretend corporations are your weird friend?

What are these "ads" of which you speake?

I'd love to create my own platform for the fediverse!

But I'm thinking it would end up looking like a console email client.

And nobody wants that ... do they?

@yojimbo
Well, there's the console interface and bash script approach ...

Well, the -triggered Paiute rat trap works.
I'll just get my scraper.

vik,
@vik@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

@phil_stevens I did the maths, because I'm humane even with rats. The rat has 0.005s to contemplate becoming a novelty beermat. I'll do a non-gory video on the trap at some point.

vik,
@vik@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

@phil_stevens Re-checked my maths (had a /2 rather than *2):20ms, but still damn fast. I'm using a 300x400mm piece of thick MDF (it's indoors) backed up by 5kg of lead scraps in a bag, which doesn't bounce. It drops 0.3m. You want a stout flat surface under and over. Preferably something easy to clean...

Bought myself an air compressor, a framing nailer, nails and a set of basic airtools, to help with building the internal framing for my shed.

Was still $300 less than a single battery-powered framing nailer, and apparently you still can't beat an air nailer for reliable power!

I'm starting to be amazed at how much you can zoom in on web pages on a laptop and still read all the actual content. Currently RadioNZ, NZ Herald, and Reuters are at 130%, The BBC stands at 140%, Al Jazeera at 150%, and the grand prize is held by Spaceflight Now with 160% zoom.
(Mastodon is at 110%)

I wonder if Air NZ would make a commitment to purchase a million litres of sustainable aircraft fuel?

Couple of caveats: It's partly based on animal fat, so not vegan. Also, that's only about 50 long-distance tankloads.

Wonderful exposure of Western bias in my Quirkey chord keyboard code comes to light when I found out Bhutan has an official keyboard layout for their (30 char) Dzonkha script, and a somewhat different view of punctuation. So my code is now a wee bit more configurable in the keyboard lookup table department 🥴

I just bought a flavoured hummus from the supermarket that turned out to be 7% sugar by weight. There really ought to be a warning label on products that are more than about 3% sugar.

It turns out that hydrogen isn't a benign gas when it comes to global warming. When it leaks (for which estimates vary from 0.1-10%) in manufacture, shipping, and use, it prevents methane from breaking down and increases low-level ozone, both significantly increasing the greenhouse effect.

vik,
@vik@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

@jonathanharker
Which is interesting as in the troposphere ozone production increases more or less linearly with hydrogen production. Bad news at both ends. https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1067144/atmospheric-implications-of-increased-hydrogen-use.pdf
