It's bedtime, so I'm just gonna leave this here for now.

The second generation μRepRap prototype now has a name: "Titch"

It's getting kinda sophisticated...

I'll just check my code.

@ElleGray Looks more like "Feed me, Seymour!" to me.

Tried getting SSH into . Use public key like a good boy - but it doesn't. Solution: set a password 😬 and login. After that authorized keys work, and can be seen correctly in .ssh/authorized_keys . But if I remove the password (which isn't prompted for) it stops working. Aaaarghhh! So then add authorized key and remove password. It finally works. Why me, Oh Lord?

Ok, running. I have installed a wifi switch. I've discovered I need to add it to a dashboard and it doesn't just magically show up on the Overview (which you'd kinda think...). It has many monitoring options and they take up much valuable screen real estate. How the f**k do I tell it to only show "ON/OFF" ? Manuals entirely unuseful.

vik,
@vik@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

@secupriv Yep, exactly what I need. I think they make have slightly over-egged the warnings they give when you want to edit a card. I thought I was about to do something really drastic when I looked at it earlier!

Things they don't tell you in the manual: When connecting your Raspberry by to the same router as your PC, the router needs to be connected to the internet.

V2 Prototype of the μRepRap is in the printer. A proper XYZ block stage rather than a delta this time, with higher resolution.

Why on Earth do households exporting electricity not get paid more for it at peak rates? Surely that would reduce the need for carbon-fired peak power plants?

vik, to random
@vik@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

Simple solution here: Of you're a power plant, stick on carbon capture by all means but also burn biomass. You'll get carbon credits for the biogenic carbon you sequester.

I'm discovering how distracting balancing your power can get once you have a solar/battery system. Now in a mode where the system is topping up battery with enough off-peak power to avoid using expensive peak power. It's like a train set but with more volts...

vik,
@vik@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

@tj We've got the system more because our power is unreliable. Our prices are set in advance for peak and off-peak, so the sums are easier. However, the API sucks rocks and does unexpected things like setting values to zero all on its own. Still working on it.

One of the interesting side-effects of the ongoing supply chain shortages is that I'm trying out lots of new types of bean, largely due to the regular types not being in stock.

vik, to random
@vik@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

Phew! Solar back on again. I think I found a race condition in turning backup power on and off (in an attempt to get the backup power reserve deployed during peak rates). Won't do that again!

@vik@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

Great. Our solar power system has thrown a wobbly, on ANZAC day of course. As soon as I switch the panels on, the inverter cuts output power, even from the mains! But it looks like if I leave the panels off we can power the building. Sub-optimal but survivable until repair guys come back on stream.

vik, to random
@vik@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

I was given an Athom WiFi-connected plug at which connects to the Open Source Home Assistant. This has necessitated buying a Raspberry Pi 5 to run HA on which in turn led to the discovery of a) it has an API to our solar inverter system, and b) what the engineer's ID and password is. I'm in...

Some genius has stuck a flamethrower on a robot dog and called it The Therminator. A second apocalypse becomes apparent when trying to search for details because all the clever search engines either go "you really meant Terminator" or shadow-ban that kind of content.

Bloody hell, is that the time? This RepRapMicron is creating the same chronon-rarified atmosphere that the original RepRap Project did.

Better control of the Z axis essential. This is what a probe head crash looks like on my μRepRap. The square is 50μm on a side, and the huge (well, 40μm) gash top right is where I ploughed the 5μm probe head into the slide... Ho hum, takes 10 mins to make a new one.

Looks like all Sharpies are not created equal. Found another one with a much finer-grained substrate, so hopefully I'll be able to substantially increase the definition on my micro-etchings.

Nearly every company I’ve come in contact with has asked me to:

A. Install their App
B. Give Feedback

First, why do I need the app? Very few had an actual good reason beyond what you’d expect from an email or Wallet ticket. One provided some minigames and additional context, which was very neat. Another added some animated tingles to the ticket to make it harder to copy, but nobody ever checked and it could be exported to an Apple Wallet anyway.

vik,
@vik@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

@futuresprog Big talk on about apps and https being largely about big players ring-fencing their data, preventing adblockers, and shifting functionality of the web onto their own regional servers for distribution while cutting data transfer costs.

vik,
@vik@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

@futuresprog When the talk comes out on video I'll give you a link. The presenter is more capable of expressing the issue in a 45 minute presentation than I am in a Mastodon toot.

Reddit signed a deal with Google to use its data to train LLMs. To celebrate, we made a firefox extension that lets you replace all your comments with any text of your choosing. All we ask is that you not choose something copyrighted. The New York Times is currently suing OpenAI for training ChatGPT on its copyrighted material, and we wouldn't want Reddit's uniquely valuable data to become hopelessly intermingled with that of litigious copyright-holders.
