@joel @jeffmcneill It’s excellent for low/no-light reading. It can even be set to auto based on time-of-day (or location, I don’t remember)

@joel @helgztech If it helps your use case: you can tell calibre to organize books on your device in any way you wish. So you could have it fill your kobo without author folders at all. Or into folders by series, whatever you want.

I'm thinking about getting some dedicated hardware to be a home server instead of just using an old laptop (that used to be my distro-experimentation laptop—a role I'd love it to resume). Any suggestions? I'm currently thinking I'll get a refurbished ThinkCenter.

wdavery,
@wdavery@fosstodon.org avatar

@benjaminhollon I’ve been using an old Dell Optiplex for years. Optiplex 7010 I believe. Super cheap and plenty of power without crazy electricity use.

wdavery,
@wdavery@fosstodon.org avatar

@benjaminhollon @chrisdoestech Can always swap that SSD into a new machine too.

My optiplex was $90 CAD, and that wasnt a crazy good deal either. SSD is a must, extra RAM eventually and I swapped for an i7 from the stock i3. Ended up putting it in a rackmount server chassis to hold more hard drives too.

I see that @Tutanota no longer offers the €1 Premium plan. Now the €3 Revolutionary plan is the cheapest offering. My existing plan was grandfathered in.

But you know what, I upgraded anyway. I always felt that the old price was amazingly cheap. If we all upgrade to the new plan, maybe some excellent work will get done, that wouldn't otherwise be within reach?

wdavery,
@wdavery@fosstodon.org avatar

@expatteacher @Tutanota @tulpa General inflation I imagine, other providers have done the same recently. Mailbox.org scrapped their 1€ plan for a 3€ now as well.

Just too cheap now to be sustainable maybe.

What percentage of polls you see do you need to leave a reply to explain your answer or point out a missing option?

wdavery,
@wdavery@fosstodon.org avatar

@benjaminhollon the real question is how many do I give up interacting with when I don’t care to fully explain myself when there isn’t a suitable option

My Waveceptor WV-200A

Not as barebones as the common favourites here but I got this as a gift ~ten years ago and it has the features I need. A countdown timer is a must for me.
Just replaced the battery yesterday and haven’t had a chance to get a successful atomic clock sync yet. Even without sync the built in calendar until 2099 makes sure the date is always right.

A bit bulky and the band isn’t my favourite choice of material but its been reliable.

wdavery,
@wdavery@fosstodon.org avatar

@joel I love a watch that has the date prominently. I’m checking the date constantly.

I searched for a new watch, just wanting to update to something newer and it’s hard to find one as full featured as this. Incredibly reliable and can take all kinds of abuse in stride.
