Nov20. Do you have an author's website specifically for promoting your writing?

No, though I have thought about it recently. It just seems like a waste without a finished book.

And I'm really not sure how necessary it is anymore. I think you could do more direct promotion for your writing on social media. Maybe you want to have something come up when someone googles you, but at that point they have already seen you somewhere. Just not sure.

willelm,

@NaraMoore True snd I've been convinced by hearing others' opinions on it. But maybe I'm not ready to spend any money on it until I actually have a book completed

Hi, I'm an as-of-yet unpublished YA author and high school math teacher who just joined Mastodon. I'm looking out for suggestions of who to follow in the writing/teaching community!

@bookstodon @edutooters

willelm,

@writeplace @bookstodon @edutooters Welcome! Another couple of daily prompt hashtags for writing are and if you like that sort of thing. You'll find a lot of authors there as well

willelm,

@floofpaldi @writeplace @bookstodon @edutooters How embarrassing for me! 🤣🤣 Thanks for catching it and correcting

@bookstodon

Finished up edits on another draft of the novel. Hooray!🎉🎉🎉

Any takers for a beta read for a 175k word low, dark, fantasy? I know it's a heavy lift and would gladly swap or help out in some other way. Thanks!

willelm,

@Lionesslady @bookstodon
No specific timeline, though if possible, I'd prefer to have it by the end of the year. Looking for any comments one would have. It has gone through a few drafts at this point so I'm more interested in pacing, whether there is any pressure to keep reading, do the arcs work and if payoffs feel earned. More plot/character focused, but anything is welcomed.

Book promotion. I think I'm in about the same situation as others I've read today. Self-promotion is hard. I think most of us would like to do the writing bit and hand over the promotion piece to someone else. I can't picture myself aggressively promoting. Maybe a reverse psychology campaign of "you probably wouldn't like it." More seriously, I think my first step (after actually publishing something) is to identify an audience, then figure out where they look for books.

willelm,

@Saposcat I'm beginning to notice a trend with these posts today 😂 . I keep waiting for someone to post the answers but it sounds like we're all in the same boat

willelm,

@Saposcat @courtcan Welcome to the "We don't know what we're doing club" 😆

willelm,

@Saposcat @courtcan I also wonder how much of it comes down to luck. Like even for people who have been successful, are they doing something different or just getting lucky with it?

willelm,

@TheSurrealAri @bookstadon Ah! How did I forget to list Dirk Gently's? My favorite Douglas Adams. Great list!

willelm,

@TheSurrealAri @bookstadon Yeah, I didn't necessarily do all my favorites but I tried to think of books I've read a lot or seem to always go back to for one reason or another. But you're right, it was always going to feel like I was leaving out books because there's just too many good ones to leave at 13.

@bookstodon

willelm,

@philip_cardella @bookstodon I haven't read a lot of the Star Wars books but I really enjoyed Thrawn. It made me think I should read more of them. And then I got distracted

willelm,

@philip_cardella @bookstodon Maybe I should check out the Ahsoka book since I haven't started the show yet

willelm,

@philip_cardella @bookstodon I haven't and I know I should but I just don't have the time, 2 young kids take that all up. Maybe I'll get around to it someday but I like that I can read some of the stories

willelm,

@philip_cardella @bookstodon this is great, I'll check it out and maybe get caught up without watching every episode. Though that goes against my more obsessive desires

willelm,

@philip_cardella @bookstodon Yeah I remember seeing that when I looked into it, but still I want to see everything. What if I miss some easter egg or something? I don't want to be out of the loop. 😄 Just gotta keep those tendencies in check now
