When encoding UHD for YouTube, what codec/format settings takes best advantage of my M3 Max MacBook Pro?

wplate, to macos
@wplate@postchat.io avatar

I am setting up my new M3 MBP, my first laptop with a notch. What app do you use to manage and/or access menubar items in that small space?

Big media management issue in - you can not specify "incoming footage goes here and proxy media created from it goes here". In many types of productions you rarely if ever have all media ready before editing.

Edit: this is a complete brain fart - disregard. I do as @wplate says below. Leave media on place so proxies get created elsewhere

wplate,
@wplate@postchat.io avatar

@stooovie I try to always import media left in place, even when the media arrives later, so only proxy/optimized media gets created in the media storage location.

I’m at the phase of my edit where the 40 minute timeline is mostly in place, I’m tightening edits, adding and tweaking audio crossfades, and finishing up titles. My 5K iMac really starts to struggle here. Every action feels sluggish. Excited for better waveform drawing in announced FCP 10.7, but that’s for Apple Silicon. I need a new desktop computer.

wplate,
@wplate@postchat.io avatar

What you think about this, plus a display?

wplate,
@wplate@postchat.io avatar

@stooovie Thanks for bursting my bubble. 😉Whenever they tout the number of 8K streams a new computer can play I get annoyed. I just want to smoothly edit one stream of UHD thank you very much.

@dominicvfx 2019 iMac 5K. How much RAM did your new iMacs get?

I think I want 64GB at least, I regularly have FCP, AE, PS, plus lots of other crap running.

An M2 Max Mac Studio with 64GB RAM and a Studio Display is $5k.

@WTL that’s awesome. I have ordered an M3 MBP to replace my 13” M1, very excited for it.

Thursday: 100 seconds of plank, 50 pushups, followed by 11km of in another sub-zero and windy morning in . Not complaining one bit - it's wonderful not not be suffering in the heat anymore!

Two images vertically separated: 1) dark Rideau Falls with lights reflecting off the water. 2) The Adawe Crossing over the Rideau River, with many ducks in the water below.

@WTL can’t do that on the trails around here, you’d trip on a root or rock!

Apple's really trying hard this time round to convince Intel Mac owners to make the switch to Apple Silicon. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if Sonoma is the last version of macOS that runs on Intel. Apple is beyond done and ready to move on

wplate,
@wplate@postchat.io avatar

@stroughtonsmith I have a 27" iMac 5K, I am not sure it feels right to replace it with a 24” 4.5K screen.

Trying to make timecode burns of some H.264 GoPro footage that has timecode, but the new H264 MP4 files from Compressor or Adobe Media Encoder don't have timecode.

Suggestions for how to get a new output with TC that matches the original file?

wplate,
@wplate@postchat.io avatar

@stooovie Trying it. Will report back.

wplate,
@wplate@postchat.io avatar

@stooovie Thank you, Shuttle Encoder's output worked as expected.

wplate,
@wplate@postchat.io avatar

@stooovie I also found that EditReady solved it, with H.264 in .mov

I started using LMNT powders earlier this year because it was the only one I could find that had a "raw" version as in just the electrolytes and no flavors, sweeteners, etc. I just discovered that it is owned by Robb Wolf. I'd rather not send him any of my money (or even clicks, view impressions, etc.). Does anyone know of another good brand of unflavored electrolyte powders/tablets?

wplate,
@wplate@postchat.io avatar

@hankg I like Precision Hydration for how subtle the flavor is in the powder products.

Do I have any friends here experienced in Mac development and building UI with constraints, disclosure boxes, and Objective-C? We're new to this more-complex UI and could use some some help getting over this layout speedbump.

Once in a while I use my NordicTrack incline trainer, then download from ifit.com the workout’s TCX file to add to Strava and TrainingPeaks.

Last week I tried to do this, but when I logged into ifit.com, there was no way to view workouts.

ifit support just confirmed that this is intentional.

“The iFIT website recently has some maintenance updates and unfortunately a few features are no longer available.”

Workouts are no longer available?? I’m so shocked by this. What is iFit doing?!

wplate,
@wplate@postchat.io avatar

@WTL I’m already a subscriber, so I’m sure they will introduce a new higher “Pro” tier to access workouts.

wplate,
@wplate@postchat.io avatar

@dominicvfx yes, the worst. Without the subscription the $2000 treadmill is actually less capable than a very basic treadmill from the 80s. I cover the screen with cardboard and watch YouTube on my iPad. I only want a feature that randomizes the incline while I run and hike as long as I want. The Google maps feature could be cool, if they allowed GPX import. It is all so disappointing. And now I can’t put my workout data into TrainingPeaks and Strava. What is the point, iFit?

wplate,
@wplate@postchat.io avatar

@dominicvfx @jaredbyrd @recollir @WTL

Another email from iFit “Hope everything is well with you. The decision to remove website functionality was determined by our usage numbers.

We want to focus on the areas most impactful to the most members possible! However, we have plans for an all new website that will be released in early 2024! Our prior website hit a point where we needed to make changes to ensure your experience working out with iFIT wasn't impacted by downtime or other issues.

Here is a link you can use to download the workout data to uploaded to Strava:
https://www.ifit.com/settings/workouts

At the end of the page you will see the option "ExportStravaut History"”

It works, but so wild that this is their designed experience for users who need their data in Strava.

Why would you remove the ability to view and export activities, without possibly replacing it for several months?

@wplate Great new video. Very nice captured. Great to see the map and the names of the other runners. And well done, again. What an effort. 🙌

wplate,
@wplate@postchat.io avatar

@recollir thank you! I’m glad you like those extra touches, the animated maps especially are some work. The shot of my leaving Sacandaga the first time was a challenge to show the runner names, but I was pleased with how it turned out.
