For someone who loudly dislikes most of Star Trek, I have spent far, far too much time thinking about how good a Section 31 show could be.

I've now distilled it to this:

If the story's ending doesn't either destroy Starfleet or show it to be fundamentally evil, they blew it.

yoz,

@Rycaut thank you! i feel overwhelming dread

yoz,

@Rycaut Michelle Yeoh is amazing in everything, no argument there.

My dread mainly comes from:

(a) hearing mostly negative stuff about Discovery (never watched it) and

(b) my expectation that Trek's runners mostly lean more towards Stasis, and reinforcing Trek's ideals, than the Revolutionary Progress it needs. >>

So I'm trying to install a piece of software on Linux, and I run a "./launch_installer.sh", and immediately it prints a message suggesting it is unpacking a JRE so it can run the installer inside the JRE, and I wonder if I am going to a dark place here

NOTE TO ZOOMERS: That's Java Runtime Environment not the other thing. "Java" is a programming language people used in the 1800s, when programming meant making punchcards for Jacquard looms

yoz,

@mcc on a related note: check out the Steam demo for Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom

yoz,

@flyingsaceur @Binder wooow, thanks for this! I remembered it last month but without enough detail (e.g. that it’s about the iPod) to find it

I wasn't paying attention to the IGF this year and uh… wow, this actually sounds pretty great https://xylemstudios.ca/

yoz,

@mcc I tried the demo (Steam) and struggled to get to grips with the game’s intended flow. It’s a neat idea, should probably give it another go

401 I’m so sorry, I seem to have forgotten your name

402 I hate to beg but the council tax bill is exorbitant

410 all things must pass, but I apologise for imposing such cruel finality on our otherwise charming conversation

200 Sorry for not having more to say here

I think DoorDash might be running on a Gateway over a DSL line.

It's probably in the Dash family’s den.

Near wall the safe where they keep the Dasher Rewards.

@hotdogsladies it was Laura's turn to update the menus but she keeps saying she's got homework

well this certainly decimated my annoyance at the increased use of definition #1

Red line: Estimated average number of daily active users on Twitter in 2013.

Green line: About the time Twitter introduced the algorithmically sorted home timeline that users where up in arms against.

People today: Social media without algorithms just doesn't work! We have to let the ruling class control what information we receive, there's just no other choice. Deciding for ourselves, hah, so naïve!

@forteller sorry; I don’t follow - what are you saying the graph proves?

We thought he was ours now.

We were wrong. So wrong.

This year, Mickey gazes also into you.

yoz,

“At the beginning, he had character. Watch “Willie”, there was definitely some there.

But we got big, he got big and we didn’t see the problem until we noticed how people describe him. Or rather, how they don’t. The ears, the voice, the hands… that’s all.

We spent millions trying to give him personality. Nothing. Then the characters around him started… paling. But he wants more.

Now, thousands more idiots will feed that void and it’ll just grow. It wants EVERYTHING.

Can’t you see… HIS EYES?”

Hey @simon, how's this for some uncanny timing:

"A marketing team within media giant Cox Media Group (CMG) claims it has the capability to listen to ambient conversations of consumers through embedded microphones in smartphones, smart TVs, and other devices to gather data and use it to target ads, according to a review of CMG marketing materials by 404 Media and details from a pitch given to an outside marketing professional."

@jameswallis While playing a fairly forgettable card game with my daughter, I wondered: what are the most memorable game instructions you’ve seen that tell you what to do once the game is over, e.g. what the winner should do to celebrate, that sort of thing?

yoz, to random

congratulations, "Ulysses pact", you are the Phrase Of The Day

(thanks mainly to @pluralistic)

yoz,

@pluralistic I'll try and recreate Cory's definition of a Ulysses Pact:

A leader creates a Ulysses Pact to prevent themself (or their successors) from both
a) doing specified Bad Things in the future, AND
b) rescinding the Pact

... in a similar way to Ulysses having his crew bind him to the mast, then ordering them to ignore his pleas and screams until they were safely past the Sirens.

The aim is to instil a set of founding values in a project/organisation so they survive leadership changes.

I should have followed Elizabeth Lopatto’s coverage of the FTX trial much more closely.

Her latest piece opens with:
“Sam Bankman-Fried is so fucked.”

Later:
“Defense lawyer Mark Cohen did his best. Unfortunately for him, the cross-examination was conducted by Sassoon, who looks like someone who uses “summer” as a verb, and often appears deceptively timid, with her hands held close to her chest.
In her cross, she simply unhinged her jaw and ate Bankman-Fried.”

When I get some time free I'm gonna program a version of Pac-Man where you play as the fruit

Tight close-up on the part of the maze where you appear

When you appear, you have no control over anything

All you do is wait

And wonder

If you're going to get eaten

You can hear, in the distance, the sounds of the game; see the ghosts go by; hear the approach of Pac-Man, hear him fade further away

If you don't get eaten in that round, you score one point

If you do get eaten, the game's over

yoz,

@clive @danhon you should definitely take a look at this year’s GMTK Game Jam: https://youtu.be/tYxZ_LOlFnU

Please forgive me for boosting The Orange Site here but this is for my fellow alter kakers who still get lost in nostalgia for early web dev:

Someone posted the original Netscape & Sun press release announcing JavaScript, and all the commenters are responding as if it’s 1995, which is lots of fun in itself

but it also produced this comment about Java & JS that needs some kind of troll award

The thread is now so long it is increasingly breaking Mastodon, so I am making a new thread, starting here.

To recap, here's the entirety of the year-one thread in the most impractical possible format: A YouTube playlist containing 246 songs and running for just over 47 hours:
