I play strategy games, write software, and stream on Peertube (not necessarily in that order). Also, sock monkeys! Preferred pronouns: he/him/his.

Based on what I've read so far by the mods' statements and by multiple third party accounts, I've decided to put lgbt dot com on my listed of limited instances on the fediverse.

Seeing as mine is a single user instance, this is largely a symbolic move on my part, but the next step is full suspension.

If I see the owners of that instance start taking concrete steps to right some serious wrongs then I will lift the block. (cont.)

I forgot to update my mastodon profile to point my streaming presence at my new instance. Unfortuantely, from what I can tell, there's currently no way to verify my account over there due to Mastodon not supporting links embedded in JS-generated content so you'll just have to trust me that it's totes legit.

I'm going to definitely join a lemmy server, but I'm not sure which one. There are some programming-focused ones but I'm hoping for more of a general tech flavor. 🤔🤔🤔

Now that I think about it, a very useful technique for avoiding the unwanted attention from the sandworms in Dune would be to employ the use of Monty Python's silly walks.

Looks like Halloween is a bust tonight. 0 trick-or-treaters, which is a first since we moved into our house nearly 4 years ago. I blame the fact temps hovered around freezing all day right after we got three inches of snow overnight.

I'm tellin' ya, they don't make Minnesota kids like they used to anymore. 😅

I just saw that YouTube ad for the LGB alliance that attacks trans people and I'm a little less than pleased about that.

And then following that was an ad for some Christmas movie called "The Creator" and I'm like guys, you are seriously barking up the wrong tree.

Also, I really need to stop going on YouTube. This is getting out of hand.

If there's one trend in web application development I've come to loathe it's the concept of eliminating "friction".

Now, don't get me wrong, I think it's beneficial to simplify interfaces, but some have decided to take things to the extreme and go as far as eliminating interfaces altogether.

Go on a website to research contractors to work on your home, for example. You click a link to learn more about them, but instead you go straight to the scheduling assistant.

No, I did not want that.

In attempting to create a video intro I may have been overthinking the problem a little bit. I'm searching websites to see if I can create a clip for use in my videos (nothing fancy; just a 5 second clip as a way to announce the video has started playing). Most of them are like "Upgrade to Pro to access our 50,000 styles and elements to personalize YOUR channel for the low low price of only $10/month" and I'm like I literally just need you for exactly one thing; calm down there, skippy 😅

So, sad news today. , my favored streaming platform over the past couple of years during the pandemic, will be shutting down July 1st. That means that my streaming activities will be moving back to while I formalize my long-term plans for my online presence.

In the meantime, I'll be doing a few more streams playing games and talking about more serious subject matters. Today I will be resuming my base. Come visit me here while supplies last!

For all the Millennials wondering what being online was like after the September 11th attacks in 2001, go to an online forum. They're recycling the old "memes" right now.

We're gonna get our booster shots this morning. Combination flu/COVID. We'll see if this kicks our ass. It's an odd-numbered spot for me and if the pattern holds I'll probably be fine. I'm crossing my fingers. 😅🤞

We may order Asian food takeout tomorrow, as is the tradition in our house whenever we get our COVID shots.

I saw an article that claimed that the software industry's "dirty little secret" was that software engineers "hated" code.

This is absolutely not true. If we hated code we wouldn't have dedicated our lives to a career in writing it. I mean, who comes up with this drivel?

What we do hate is poorly written code.

It's like if an architect looked at a shitty building and said "I hate this", and everyone concluded "Wow, architects really hate designing buildings!"

Oh my god.

I just learned that Annie Potts, the actress who plays Sheldon's grandmother in Young Sheldon, also played Janine in the Ghostbusters movies. Yes, the woman who answered the phone as their receptionist.

That is AWESOME. 😂

Okay. I really need to get this out in the open and off my chest because I see people making this mistake all the time and it's driving me nuts.

"web3" is crypto shit. The brain trust behind that scam co-opted that term for their own benefit with zero regards to whether it was already being used by someone else. It was a stupid power play, and nearly everyone in the relevant technical spheres knows it.

The true "Web 3.0" is the semantic web.

One of my favorite things about Discord for Ubuntu is how it now makes you download and manually install a new deb file twice a week. "Today's you're lucky day!" Is it, Discord? Is it really?

My observations of a certain segment of IT:

Infosec Professional, 2023: I am an expert with years of experience who understands best security practices and the most urgent vulnerabilities plaguing the Internet in the modern day and age

Infosec Professional, 2024: This is my farm. I grow potato. I do not live within a five mile radius of a power line or any other functioning electronics.

The electricians are here and they are going to replace the base board heaters upstairs. After they are done I'll move my desk back and get my computer up and running again. We might have a stream tonight yet, if I feel up for it.

So, about the StackOverflow/openAI announcement:

I'll be honest: SO's utility has, along with a number of online resources for technical information, degraded considerably in recent years. It's hard to put my finger on when this started happening, but the days of "I just copied the code off of SO" are years behind us.

Partly this has to do with the proliferation of web platforms. When everyone was using jQuery it was easy to consolidate common questions and answers. Not so much anymore.

Sometime around 10PM tonight the Twin Cities is about to get hit by Canadian wildfire smoke.

Take care, especially if you're going outside tonight!
