I play strategy games, write software, and stream on Peertube (not necessarily in that order). Also, sock monkeys! Preferred pronouns: he/him/his.

Oh no, my favorite Bluetooth headphones are starting to disintegrate. I had these for a while, so I'm not too surprised. They still work fine but those little bits of fabric are falling off everywhere, including onto my clothes.

It is s bit interesting that people tend to assume that the level of technological socialization that exists today has always existed.

A lot of the weird byproducts of the web we see today are the result of someone (or a bunch of someones) taking a protocol designed to serve hosted text documents structured to allow for hyperlinking to other documents and turning it into an applications platform.

Now, people are like why do web addresses start with www? It's so pointless! Well you see...

I've just been thinking and musing, and I want to share my uninformed opinion. 😅

It's kind of interesting that while this platform (Mastodon and the fediverse at large) is far more vibrant and bustling than it ever has been in any point in its history, people feel obligated to post about how this place is bad and it's dying because it's bad or the people are bad somehow.

EDIT: forgot to mention this was on Twitch

Today, I saw that some people were complaining about "soft porn" showing up under recommended channels when they went onto the main site.

So I logged on, and sure enough at the top of my recommended list I saw the streamer in question under the "Art" category. She was essentially nude from the waist up, and she was recording from her shower.

I don't know if there was some sort of weird A/B testing going on in the platform, but it was very odd to see.

Immediate reply: "How big a trebuchet are we talking about?"

One of the downsides of self-hosting your own video platform is that you pay for everything out of pocket. It's not prohibitively expensive, but the costs do add up.

Today I'm deleting old streaming videos, but first I'm downloading them and sending them to a my local archive. Eventually I plan on backing everything up to optical drive, but for now the RAID 10 array I have set up will have to do.

Thankfully lets me do this easily.

So I think Discord is doing a thing now where it's monitoring conversations in channels and sending notifications with the topic being discussed.

I was just sent a phone notification not because I was tagged in anything, but because some people were talking in chat and I got a summary of the conversation. I strongly suspect generative AI was involved.

I'm 48. 😂

I guess there are worse things. 😅

I'm going to update my video intro clip to include a little bit more verbiage including my real name.

I'm not Batman, after all. Heck, my LinkedIn profile is right there in my bio on Mastodon. I think that having my real name in the intro for my recorded content gives a clearer idea about who created it. "Zalasur" is my online nickname, but it's not really a persona.

I don't mean to yuck on anybody's yum but I sort of feels like there is a lot of premature celebrating with regards to Trump's indictments and grand jury hearings. He hasn't been convicted yet, and he's still the Republican front-runner for the Presidential election. Hell, he's even beating Biden in some polls.

I'm not saying people shouldn't feel joy at his misfortune (I certainly do), but I sort of feel like people are setting themselves for a huge disappointment down the road.

A little for your

So people have been noticing that you often don't see replies to posts on Mastodon. This is especially true if the post originated from a user who's on another instance from your own.

How to rectify the situation? Go to the source. On Mastodon, in the "three dots" menu next to each post there's an option to "Open Original Page". This will open up the post directly from that other instance and you'll see all the replies there.

I know that weather forecasting is more of an art form than science at times, but I sort of have to believe the models are broken when they continuously forecast a 50% chance of rain three days out that consistently fails to materialize.

We were forecast to have thunderstorms all week this week, or at least a better-than-even chance of them each day this week. So far? One slight drizzle. That was it. The rest of the week doesn't look too good, either.

I want to take aside the people who think 80 column layout rules should be enforced by the typescript linter and ask them, "What is wrong with you? Did your parents not love you enough?"

For any computer manufactured after 1986, 120 column works just fine. The theory that 80 columns forces developers to "write cleaner code" isn't working. It's making the code harder to read and maintain.

I'm going to upgrade my instance to 6.0.2 (a bugfix release). There will be a minute or two of downtime.

The Vue3 composition API feels like it was built by developers who hated object oriented programming so they decided to reinvent it, badly.

A weird thing about social media was that it kinda showed me that there are an remarkable number of people out there who really do exist and who know like 30 of the same people I do.

...and I've never met them once in my entire life.

Who are these shadow people who walk around out there???

You know, here's something that's always kinda bugged me as a web developer. It is the year 2024 and still the primary function of every commercial website in existence is to get you to sign up to their email subscriptions.

Email.

Subscriptions.

Like, why did they even bother with the website in the first place?

This weekend I'm going to do some long-overdue updates to the peertube server. I need to update my "About" page and clarify certain terms and conditions especially as they pertain to financial contributions. My channels could use a little sprucing up to make them a bit more visually distinctive. I also need to create a new channel for tech uploads where I'll post my vlogs to. And finally I'm going to create a redirect URL to make it easier for people to find my streams.

Then lunch, shower, and dwarf fortress adventures later? Well see how quickly I can get all this done.

Oof, so I did a dirty deed today.

We have rabbits that like to hang out in our back yard. They are a pair we see quite often and a few days ago I saw one of them gathering grass over on the side of our house.

Neat! They are building a nest!

Not so neat: they popped off the cover of our window well leading to our basement and dug a hole under there. I would have missed it had I not been looking for it. It looked like a small pile of grass until I pulled it back and saw the hole (cont'd)

It's fun when you edit code that's been written by someone with the job title "Software Architect" and there are so many mistakes in it that it takes you two days to clean it up. 😅

Today on Dwarf Fortress: The Sinister Start in the Plane of Myth, my citizens has a sad! 😢

I keep sending them outside to build the outside fort and they are getting fed up. But not to worry, I finished the roof so now they con complete their work in a smelly goo-free environment. Or, at least until I decide to build the fishing hut.

On my agenda for tomorrow (my day off):

  • Laundry
  • Change air filters
  • Clean dust out of smoke detectors
  • Laundry
  • Update my resumé

If I can get all that done early enough I'll also do a stream. Maybe. We'll see how tired I am. 😅
