But why would you need to get all possible clients to work? Just get the ones that are actually on your network working. And don't open your Internet-facing firewall unless for some bizarre reason you have to print from over the Internet (can't really see a critical use case for this except for outliers).

Unless you're running a web cafe or something and have to support random laptops that people bring in. At that point security is out the window anyway because who knows what will be going on your network.

gorillotaur, to fantasy Swedish

1 favorite/boost = an honest opinion about fantasy, science fiction and other genre culture.

@gorillotaur Man, imagine writing that any other way: "Not to mention the Jew stuff" or "Not to mention the Muslim stuff."

Do you have problems transferring other large files, such as archives in different formats or large video files?

My ancestry.com experience in a nutshell (lemmy.world)

I don’t know if I’m just doing something wrong but I built my family tree and the website seems to have barely any information about my family at all. I found out more just checking out our national archives then what I found on this website. It’s maybe worth noting that I’m not in the US and it does appear to be...

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make. Your paragraph of dialog doesn't make any sense to me.

I think you got a lemon. I don't know if I've ever heard my fan on mine under Ubuntu 22.04. The fan does get quite loud when I boot it into Windows, though.

What happened to the French colonists in the US. ?

Something stunning when travelling to the US is the number of cities called some something Ville, Nashville, Jacksonville and all the small ville you’ll see when going at a random place on google maps, let alone a state called “vert mont” which can’t sounds more french....

BaldProphet,

Oh, hey, that makes a lot of sense.

BaldProphet,

Yeah, I think it just sounded foreign and exotic to them.

Overactive moderators

My very first Lemmy post for this ultralight community quickly received several upvotes, yet within a couple hours it was deleted. There was nothing offensive in it. I simply shared some ancient poetry relevant to ultralight backpacking. It is not the role of the moderator to remove things they don’t like or possibly that they...

There are ultralight communities on other instances (such as ultralight@kbin.social) if this one doesn't suit you. That's the beauty of the Fediverse.

No, I have never believed that Russia and China tried leftism. It sounds like you're using a different definition of "liberal". Liberals comprise the majority of voters in the Democratic party and are not in favor of imposing their viewpoints on others. They are referred to with contempt and derision by the the right.

The "anti-hierarchy" faction is defined with the term "progressive" and is probably the group you are calling left wing. Progressives tend to be illiberal and favor the imposition of their social philosophies on others. They are anti-free-speech and support a more powerful, more intrusive government. Many also support alternate economic models, such as communism or socialism.

Keep trying to read my mind, maybe if you guess enough times you'll get it right.

How to create a sandbox folder, restricting write access to all files contained in it to that folder itself?

Hello! Let’s say I have an executable file, but I’m unsure of the source, and may contain bugs/errors/malwares/bad things that can mess up my machine. I want to execute it anyway, but I want to make sure that it does not mess things up. Is it possible to create a “sandbox” folder, place the executable inside it, and then...

What you want is a virtual machine or container. Check out KVM.

Of all the wealthy nations, we have by far the highest levels of inequality. The rise of excessive economic inequality can be fairly closely tracked with the rise of violence and mass shootings in the United States.

I believe that reducing inequality and making life here less of a gamble will be most effective at reducing violence and suicide, without weakening the protection of the 2nd Amendment.

BaldProphet,
BaldProphet avatar

What "well-organized militia" are you talking about? If you're referencing the 2nd Amendment, it mentions a "well-regulated", meaning well-equipped, militia consisting of the people of the United States. Nearly a century of the federal government consolidating power has weakened the militia, but it should still fear crossing lines that the people won't tolerate.

Sadly, the acts of tyranny you mentioned are mostly applauded by the armed demographic and largely opposed by the same group arguing for Americans to be disarmed. If they armed themselves and became proficient in their weapons of choice, perhaps it wouldnt be so easy to ban abortion, abuse the power of the state, and lead a coup against the democratically elected government.

Just sayin'.

Wouldn't the fediverse work better if it was like a drive array rather than independent communities on independent servers?

I get the impression that we’re headed for the same issues that pop up when we put all our eggs in one basket with Reddit/FB/whatever. People flock to the largest instance, and someday that instance could go down due to cost or the host losing interest....

BaldProphet,
BaldProphet avatar

There are some peer-to-peer projects that work more like a "drive array" using blockchain technology. They're the more extreme version of "decentralized".

BaldProphet,

If this service provider is located in the US, it won't be a legal issue thanks to Section 230.

I'm having a similar experience. When I last posted about it, instead of discussing the problems with the reputation system and how it can be (and is currently being) abused, everyone just wanted to complain about my prior comments.

The Kbin community feels more toxic than Reddit, oddly enough.

Psalm 34:14: "Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it." (NIV)

BaldProphet,
BaldProphet avatar

This is exactly what I believe, that God is able to look into our universe as if from outside, seeing the whole of it (including time) all at once.

BaldProphet,
BaldProphet avatar

Probably, especially in the Old Testament. They had very different ideas of morality back then.

You're right, some repentance after death is technically an LDS doctrine, however it isn't widely accepted. But yes, our concepts of heaven and hell are more inclusive than the standard Christian binary.
