Today kbin.social is blocking a huge list of domains just to get federation working again.
The reason for this temporally block is not to defederate, but rather to get the large backlog of 500k messenger queue processed again. Anyway, this does mean that kbin.social is federating again with other instances.
This is a temporary measure. Several users / developers are looking into how to better optimize the failed message queue, as we speak. Hopefully Ernest has eventually time to dive into solutions as well instead of workarounds, once his instance is migrated to Kubernets. So, just finished reading an article on WaPo about fireflies/lightening bugs and got me thinking further... Car headlights suck. They mess up our night vision when we pass another dickhead running white/blue lights. We mess up the habit(at) of many animals/bugs. So why not red lights? My hiking/camping headlamp has a...
The lights, themselves, aren't always illegal. Some of them are. The ones that are obviously emitting blue light are definitely illegal, but the ones that are just so bright that they "feel" blue are typically completely legal.
The problem with those lights is that they're often not installed properly. A lot of inexperienced car owners will install HID lights without the proper housing device, causing the lights to point at an incorrect angle (causing the blindness when one of them tailgates you) and making it so that they don't disperse the actual spectrum of light properly (causing the blueness).
It's often further exacerbated by the fact that the people who do these shoddy installations are the same people who drive pointlessly lifted vehicles and like to really ride your ass at night, blasting that laser beam of blue death straight off your rear-view and into your retinas.
Unfortunately, enforcement on these things is basically nonexistent.
…but I don’t want to get rid of it! Been using RIF since 2011 and it’d feel so weird to take it off my home screen. I tried the Reddit app but it pollutes the front page with so much unnecessary shit that it becomes a chore to browse. Liking the look of Lemmy so far though.
I looked at the lemmy stats again today like the last few days (since the 1st of July), apparently tonight there has been another wave of bot signups.:...
Perhaps, but how do we separate inactive bot accounts from inactive accounts by people who are checking out what all the commotion is after the Reddit fiasco and just lurking in the new spaces? I feel like that's a really inconclusive data point right now.
Due to racist propaganda in the US during the 80s and 90s. Crack cocaine was portrayed in the media as a "black" drug, and many of the news stories about crack were specifically about it's effects on black communities.
While the name isn't inherently racist, in and of itself, it does still carry some racial connotations behind it. Maybe it's different these days for zoomers, but growing up during the "crack epidemic", as it was called, and seeing the way it was covered in the news, I can understand why some people are resistant to the name.
And even if in the US it does have this connotation (IDK I’m not American), why should Europeans care?
The same reason you'd probably care if an American said something ignorant about Europeans. I feel like this is like saying "The N word wasn't used in my country, it doesn't mean to us what it means to you, so why do you care if I use the word?"
Obviously that's taking the example to an extreme, but I think you get the gist.
why should the mainstream culture of a foreign country dictate what I can or can’t say (or name my project)?
I don't believe that anybody is suggesting this. Obviously you can name your project whatever you wanna name it and use whatever words you wanna use. Nobody is taking that from you.
But just know that there world is a big place, and not everybody shares your viewpoints, and some of them are going to tell you why they disagree with you.
You'll have a choice in that situation. Either you change yourself to fit in with others, or you stay true to your beliefs and stick to your guns. There isn't an inherently wrong answer here. Whichever you go with is a personal choice that nobody can make for you, but you'll need to own your choice, whichever it ends up being. If you change your ways, you need to accept that you changed yourself, and that nobody else changed you. If you remain undeterred and choose not to change, then that's also on you. Nobody chooses your thoughts for you.
Sorry, that was a bit of a tangent, I know. It just irks me when I see people suggest that they can't say what they want to say and suggest that it's anybody else's fault, so I wanted to point that out.
I've been seeing this for quite a bit, and thought it'd resolve itself once CloudFlare was taken off, but I'm still seeing it on many external communities from e.g. Lemmy. Not all posts or comments are visible from Kbin. Any idea on what's going on?...
I've noticed that sometimes new threads from federated magazines sometimes don't show up for me in Kbin, as well as older ones. I think there may be some sort of syncing issue that causes that, perhaps Kbin refreshes data from other instances at set intervals or something.
Like many people I'm here because of reddit going to shit. Twitter has increasingly been shit. gycat is shutting down in September. To me it seems like lots of bastions of social media are crumpling, but as a previous active reddit user, I've been personally effected. Is this just a frequency illusion or has something changed...
It's definitely frustrating. I've been finding myself really missing the internet of the 2000s/2010s, when new and interesting things were popping up and were worth talking about to friends. These days, it just feels like a chore to do anything online, like I'm just ticking off boxes on my to-do list but no longer having fun with the discovery process at all.
Hopefully this shake-up of some of the big tech giants brings some of that back.
That's assuming that those algorithms are coded to be truly neutral reflections of a user's interest, and aren't deliberately weighted to push outrage-inducing (ie. engagement-baiting) content.
I marvel at social media algorithms the same way I marvel at the creation of the atomic bomb. It's fascinating, sure. But to imply that it was designed with neutral motives at heart is dishonest.
I tried Jerboa briefly and couldn't get it to work well for me. Then I visited kbin on my phone's browser and was prompted to install the kbin app!? I haven't seen any references to it, but it's exactly what I wanted...? Has anybody else tried it?
The version you've installed is the PWA (Progressive Web App). It's effectively just a stripped-down browser window that loads the mobile site in its own dedicated "app" on your device, even though it's technically just a separate Chrome window.
For a lot of users, this may be all they need. But because it's just the mobile web page, you won't get any extra features that you might find with a dedicated app (like notifications or custom UI elements).
Oh man, I forgot all about OC Remix! I miss some of the bizarre "techno version" songs people would make there. I remember having some really weird mp3s on my Zune of remixes from Diablo 1 songs.
I almost bought an iRiver after one of my best friends at school showed me how he could play music videos on his. This was back in like 2004/2005 or so, so that was super impressive tech at the time.
My clan finally got around to doing a catalyst run for Touch of Malice, and even though the weapon itself is very niche, we had a blast figuring out the puzzle, repeatedly dunking on the final statue, and being rewarded with the catalyst. I’m actually motivated to use the gun now and finish the catalyst, while other catalysts...
I'd love it if we had more creative catalysts, but I think it's more important for the new exotics to actually be useful, first. Touch of Malice is a really dope weapon, but its use-case is pretty specific. It's outclassed by a lot of other more useful weapons in that slot, which makes me hesitant to even want to make a build with it in the first place. I feel like several of the recent exotics we've gotten have just been too low-tier to really care about all too much; Vexcalibur comes to mind as another really awesome exotic that has no real use-case scenario that makes me want to actually equip it.
That's crazy! I wonder what the reason for the shutdown is. Given that Gfycat was used heavily on Reddit, I have to wonder if the recent Reddit changes are at all related.
I know scouts aren't meta and haven't really been meta for a while, but I've been having an absolute blast with a Taraxippos with Hatchling in Control matches lately.
I play Hunter and use Threadling grenades and the new aspect for the decoy dodge (which I mostly just use for even more Threadlings). Threadlings aren't that powerful on Hunter, but I'm going for quantity/frequency over DPS potential.
Because I'm constantly spawning in these little personal Screebs, and from long distance, I'm getting tons of tags on enemies that I'm even seeing yet, so if somebody else ends up getting the clean-up, I'm still usually getting a bit of ability regen for the assist, anyway, which lets me throw even more Threadling grenades and decoys.
The little chip damage from a Threadling isn't much, but it can shave off a shot or two from your TTK when they stick their head out of cover. And Threadlings are great at making people poke their heads out; nobody wants to just stand still and tank the damage, so they usually panic and try to challenge, where they're easy pickings from afar.
I've been pairing it with Foetracer, to get a leg-up on people trying to challenge my lanes from around corners. It's kind of a weird build to go for, and the playstyle really does require that you sit in the back of the map and play a bit more slower/calculated, but it's been a ton of fun to use. I get more hate-whispers from this than when I bring out the Jotunn. :)
Kbin federation change?
Was there recently a kbin backend change? I haven’t been able to see kbin posts all week but they’re populating now.
