FTA:
Apple announced it will permanently do away with the My Photo Stream album next month. The feature automatically stores pictures taken in the last 30 days.
Due to the impending shutdown, My Photo Stream stopped uploading snaps on June 26 — and everything in the album will be deleted when the service ceases July 26.
However, any pics that were uploaded to My Photo Stream before June 26 will remain in iCloud for 30 days from the date of upload and will be available on devices where My Photo Stream is enabled.
To ensure you do not lose any pictures, go into the My Photo Stream album in your camera roll and save your pictures to your device or to iCloud.
Beehaw doesn't have downvotes? What about if I post on a Beehaw thread from within kbin? Do my downvotes not register in that situation? Or do they just not have the option for themselves within their own instance?
I actually prefer having a visible scoring system in place. Things like that can be red flags that indicate whether or not somebody is participating in a discussion in bad faith. If you take a cursory glance through somebody's profile and see that they're constantly stirring up trouble and being a bother to people, you know not to waste your energy dealing with them.
Obviously it's not a perfect solution for that situation, and doesn't apply in all scenarios (trolls can also be good karma farmers, too), but it's an extra indicator that can help determine somebody's true motives in a discussion.
Scores will reflect popularity more than general quality consensus.
I think that's just an unavoidable consequence of having a forum that allows for voting like this. Even on Reddit, very few people upvoted/downvoted according to the "official" guidelines (based on whether or not a post was of quality/contributed to the discussion) and instead just upvoted what they thought was funny or downvoted what they disagreed with.
That's a people issue more than it is a UI/UX issue.
Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are both fantastic games - and Tears of the Kingdom really does feel (to me) like they just took Breath of the Wild, and added a few more years of dev time to it....
I've heard that Illumination is already in talks with Nintendo on a Zelda movie. Sounds like the Mario movie did well enough that Nintendo wants to make more.
I feel like the VC/investor money that's kept huge swaths of the internet afloat for the last 20 years is finally starting to run dry. All these huge platforms who have been in "burn mode" since they were founded never figured out how to become profitable earlier on, and are now scrambling to keep themselves sustainable.
It's hard to feel sorry for them, even in the midst of their downfall. They've all had plenty of time to prepare for the day the their corporate sugar daddies leave them, and instead sought short-term profits over long-term sustainability.
I do feel bad for the communities, though. We've basically seen the Walmart-ification of the internet, where a few big corporate entities moved into the neighborhood and basically took over the landscape with their presence, effectively strong-arming smaller competition out of existence. So it'll be good to see more homegrown communities sprout back up in their place again.
Maybe we can see something like this happen with actual Walmarts soon, too. :)
Is there any hope? Or is it inevitable that big corporations will take over what started as a way to escape big corporate platforms and to focus on real communities and discussions and replace it with a toxic shithole pumped full of ads?
I'd have to imagine that Meta would be locked within their own little bubble. I find it hard to believe that many of the current instances out there wouldn't immediately opt to defederate from Meta out of principle. I don't think it'd be difficult to find a community that's blocked all interaction with Meta.
they did not respond to a request to use the app with screen curtain on.
That's pretty damning. If they can't even demo it while simulating a real world use-case, then that tells me how little faith they really have in their product.

One of the best things about reddit was looking for answers or other users with the same problem as you, and since Google didn’t really help with that anymore and instead insisted on giving you business results, the best practice was to put your search terms in followed by ‘reddit’ and you’d find your answer.
I think OP is asking about a broader, Fediverse-scaled search. So using the site: search tag will only search a single Lemmy instance. I don't think Google will index cross-instance content in those searches, otherwise it'll end up with a ton of duplicate results. So if what you're looking for was actually posted to a different instance, it may not be found with that search.
I'm just theorizing, though, since this is all still really new and untested.
Hopefully it's not permanent, I love his videos! But if he does decide to retire, he still has my support. The dude's absolutely earned a break from over a decade of grinding out videos.
The fact that I can open up ChatGPT right now and say "Write a Kotaku article about why Tetris is racist" and get a 100% believable result out of it should be a sign that they've been replaceable for a while now.
A few of these appear to be remakes and spin-off titles, but that's still a crazy amount of new projects. It's honestly kind of insane just how much content Ubisoft has been putting out in recent years. It's legitimately hard to even keep track of anymore.
I noticed that when I was logged in, whenever I refreshed I would get a 429 error. However after clearing my app data, and opening the app as a subconscious abatement of boredom, I realized I was still being fed live content....
I don't believe this is going against the dev's API usage. I believe TalkLittle has said that he's already revoked the token RIF uses for Reddit's API (which was what prompted the 429 errors), so I imagine the app is falling back to a free, limited-use API functionality to show content but not interact with it.
Yep, I'm inclined to believe this, especially considering that currently notifications seem to be delayed in many cases. My notifications will show empty for hours, and then I'll see new notifications for replies I've already seen by that point.
Likely gonna be a few weeks before things start to stabilize after the influx of new users.
I really want to believe you're the real Margot. The idea of AAA-listers being early adopters to super nerdy, niche web platforms like Lemmy tickles me.

I don’t understand how Lemmy.world developers managed to surpass both Lemmy.ml and Beehaw.org instances in user activity.

Are upvotes counting towards your reputation now?
Logged in a few minutes ago and noticed that reputation in my account was much higher then before. Guessing it might be counted now.
