I'll second Ubooquity. I have a lot of experience with this, as I've been self-hosting my eBooks and Audiobooks for many years now. Ubooquity is not perfect, but if you're willing to tinker with it, you can get it set up pretty nicely. There are themes, and the Plex theme actually makes it look really slick.

Kavita is the new kid on the block for me - I have been testing it out as a general-purpose eReader but I'm not ready to give it my recommendation yet.

AudioBookShelf is awesome for audiobooks. I can't speak to its capability as an eReader but I thought I'd throw that out there for anyone wanting a second opinion. I use it daily and the Android app is great too. My go-to audiobook server for life if it stays just like it is right now.

When it comes to personal stuff I only use Firefox, regardless of device. But as a web developer I end up having to use them all at various times, and Safari isn't too bad.

Are artists and creators not welcome in this community? (sh.itjust.works)

I decided to do a bit of a dive into this platform, and while I think it is an interesting idea, I am yet to find a space on Lemmy where I am welcome. I am an artist. I have a Patreon that pays my bills and puts food on the table. Generally, I give the majority of my stuff away for free to the community, but that usually comes...

I personally don't mind seeing a link to the artist's patreon or website or whatever on a post, as long as it's not over the top or inserted clearly as an ad for whatever is being sold. I feel like it's OK for that to be there for the people who want to see more of your work or purchase something. What I don't like to see is my feed getting filled with what I perceive as advertisements. So I think there is a happy middle ground.

SO and I are going out to dinner tonight. Tomorrow if we feel like getting up early enough we may go check out some local farmers' markets or garage sales. Besides that, no specific plans. Maybe grill some ribs I've got in the freezer.

Understanding hibernation is actually likely going to be a critical component of space travel - "cryo" sleep might actually just be a form of induced hibernation. These kinds of breakthroughs get us closer to that.

Looks great. Bet it feels great too, like there's a whole new space back there.

Optimum Internal Temperature for Pork Butts

Is there any community input on pork butts cooked via smoking or oven. I usually finish mine in the oven until center hits 205 ºF to render fat and reduce connective tissue. For me that means removing from the smoker after ~6 hours and finishing in the oven with an embedded temperature probe....

I'll typically pull the butt from the smoker when the temp reads anywhere from 195 - 205, just depending on what it's looking like at that time and how quickly I get to it. Then I wrap tightly in aluminum foil and let it sit for 30 - 45min. This finishes it off and renders the fat nicely, then it's easy for shredding or whatever you're doing.

Yeah I generally do the 6-8lb size as well, and I have a charcoal barrel smoker so I like to do the snake method and go all day (10-12 hours). I'll typically get set up around 6am, that'll put dinner around 8pm. Perfect excuse to sit outside with a beer and watch the day go by.

Curious, if you were/are a Reddit user, will you be leaving the platform for good or have you already? CEO has called unpaid moderators' concerns "noise", that will be "passing soon."

There's a lot of noise with this one. Among the noisiest we've seen. Please know that our teams are on it, and like all blowups on Reddit, this one will pass as well. The most important things we can do right now are stay focused, adapt to challenges, and keep moving forward. We absolutely must ship what we said we would....

Yeah I'm effectively off of there. I will still be looking at some of the tech related subs as they are relevant to my career, and there's also a lot of really good info buried in some of those subs. Hopefully people are scraping them - I may do so myself when/if they come back up, before the API armageddon hits.

Timeline World History - awesome youtube channel with tons of full-length history docs. WWII, Romans, Egyptians, ancient history + more (www.youtube.com)

This is a great channel which I have followed for a long time and still find new things to watch from. I really enjoy their WWII stuff. They seem to have a ton of different docs from all kinds of sources, some old and some new.

As I've gotten older I've tried to even out my sleep schedule - it used to be much worse than it is now. That said, it's pretty rare for me to get more than 6 hours of sleep, and typically that's enough.

Most nights I go to bed between 11 and 12, and I get up between 5:30 and 6:30 weekdays. Weekends I'll sleep till around 7 but never later than 8.

Of course it won't shut down.

Reddit can remove the mods of any sub at any time and simply open the subs back up. They are allowing them to remain shut now as a PR move because it's a worse look if they take them back by force. But make no mistake - that's what will happen in the long run.

The thing that is really going to hurt Reddit in the long run is that all of the Reddit links on Google are "breaking" - if someone searches something and a Reddit post comes up as a result, there is about a 7/10 chance that the sub is private and the post isn't visible. This will hurt Reddit badly in the long run because Google will remove these results if they stay that way for, say 2 - 3 weeks. Then Reddit loses the ad revenue and new user capture they were getting from organic Google traffic. They can't simply get that back by reopening the subs, either - once those pages are downranked on Google, it will be difficult for them to rebuild the traction to get a high listing. Some have been there for 10+ years.

It seems strange to me that someone would not want to understand something which affects their SO's life so inherently.

I'm sort of regretting not scraping some of the more important tech subs on there before the blackout...some really valuable info could be lost. Hopefully someone else already has that covered.

Ubuntu Azure AD Authentication

I recently found: AAD Auth from Canonical/Ubuntu for native AzureAD auth for Ubutnu systems. For the past bit we've mostly been Windows/macOS, and never really entertained linux for business use - mostly because we've never had the tooling for it. We exclusively use Azure AD (no on-prem AD), so in the past when looking the...

Cool - I was actually just thinking about whether this was possible recently. I'm setting up Active Directory on my home network to make a few things easier and I wondered about how to mesh that with my Linux systems.
