FaceDeer

@FaceDeer@kbin.social

Basically a deer with a human face. Despite probably being some sort of magical nature spirit, his interests are primarily in technology and politics and science fiction.

Spent many years on Reddit and is now exploring new vistas in social media.

A couple of weeks back there was an article making the rounds of the fediverse about how people with reasonably decent incomes were nevertheless living "paycheck to paycheck", and a number of examples were given in the article with their individual stories of woe about how they were baffled by how burdened with debt they were. Most of those stories, when you dug in with just a slightly critical eye instead of an automatic assumption of victimhood, revealed people making foolish choices to take on debt and support the maximally lavish lifestyle that they could manage.

The comment section was weird. It turned out that there were some people there who thought this was perfectly reasonable, giving examples of "necessary expenditures" from their own lives that were just as excessive when examined. If you think that building a deck or buying a new bed simply because it's "time for a new one" are necessary expenditures then it's kind of hard to be sympathetic when you complain about how you have no money for long-term savings.

Is there just some basic personality type that finds it hard to be responsible with money, or is this a failure of education somehow? I have ideas for how to help but help will be unwelcome by people who refuse to recognize that they have a problem.

US government may sue PacifiCorp, a Warren Buffett utility, for nearly $1B in wildfire costs (apnews.com)

The U.S. government is threatening to sue PacifiCorp, a unit of Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, to recover nearly $1 billion in costs related to the 2020 wildfires in southern Oregon and northern California, though the company is trying to negotiate a settlement....

It's interesting when I see headlines start popping up identifying particular individual billionaires as the owners of companies that have done something bad. Usually it's just the company itself that gets called out, since investors usually have little direct control over stuff like this.

It's the "peer-reviewed" part that should be raising eyebrows, not the AI-generated part. How the gibberish images were generated is secondary to the fact that the peer reviewers just waved the obvious nonsense through without even the most cursory inspection.

FaceDeer,

I've lost track, is AI a good thing today or a bad thing?

Poland's new government deprograms its once far-right public media (www.npr.org)

WARSAW, Poland — It’s 7:30 in the evening in Warsaw, and public news broadcaster TVP Info is about to broadcast live to millions of viewers across Poland. Producers in a crowded control room scurry in and out, sometimes stopping to peer through a narrow window into a studio where the host reads from a teleprompter....

Nice to hear some solidly good news like this.

Israel Says It Will Not Force Gazans Into Egypt, as It Searches Major Hospital (www.nytimes.com)

Israel said on Friday that it would not try to force Palestinians from southern Gaza into Egypt, seeking to calm Palestinian fears of a mass displacement even as Israeli forces pressed ahead with a military operation inside the largest hospital in the area....

FaceDeer,

They're not going to force the Gazans, no. They're just going to systematically flatten Gaza and shoot people and if the Gazans choose to flee to Egypt, well, that's out of Israel's hands.

Except our walled garden!

Or, you know, clicking a button in the settings to turn it off.

The face-eating leopard is eating its own face. Fascinating. If thousands of Ukrainians weren't dying as a result I would be enjoying the spectacle.

You're not going to stop hearing about AI. Perhaps AI companies won't be so high-profile, but AI itself is being integrated into lots of things and it's not going to go away. The only thing that's happened here is that it's proving to be not quite so profitable as expected being an AI-specific company.

Edit: Perhaps not even that, the article appears to be neglecting to mention that this is part of a trend across the whole stock market rather than something AI-specific.

Why do some websites have a "Continue Reading" button?

Some article websites (I’m looking at msn.com right now, as an example) show the first page or so of article content and then have a “Continue Reading” button, which you must click to see the rest of the article. This seems so ridiculous, from a UX perspective–I know how to scroll down to continue reading, so why hide...

My guess is that this gives them data they can analyze on how many people actually read the page that far.

Aha, there's source of the problem. Those phones weren't set to airplane mode.

If you're really that sick for that long, I would honestly call a doctor for some advice. Where I live there's a number, 811, for non-emergency medical advice. Maybe there's something like that where you are.

A while back my dad almost died from the flu because he couldn't eat well enough to keep his electrolytes balanced, you'll want to avoid that before it becomes potentially life threatening.

At the end of the article:

Younger firms and CEOs also tend to be more enthusiastic about hybrid work arrangements, meaning they’ll get more popular over time as existing business heads retire, he added.

So don't worry, those fragile ego managers will die out over time.

I don't think sites like Reddit or Lemmy are for "connecting people." The opposite, in fact. I'm not here to connect to people, I'm here to connect to information and ideas. I follow communities due to their subject matter, not due to who is present there. I don't respond to people because I recognize them, I respond based on what they wrote in a specific comment.

Things like Twitter or Mastodon are for "connecting people." That's their purpose, you follow a person because you want to see what they want to say. That's why I avoid those parts of the Fediverse, I'm not here for that.

There's a little bit of something for everyone, focus on the bits that are suited to you and don't spend too much time messing around in the other parts.

Not at all. From what I understand of this article, it wouldn't stop you from doing anything you wanted with the image. It just generates a signed certificate at the moment the picture is taken that authenticates that that particular image existed at that particular time. You can copy the image if you like.

Amazon's drone delivery program is the joke it always sounded like. (news.yahoo.com)

Only one item can be delivered at a time. It can’t weigh more than 5 pounds. It can’t be too big. It can’t be something breakable, since the drone drops it from 12 feet. The drones can’t fly when it is too hot or too windy or too rainy....

And it will keep on being a joke until, suddenly, one day it's not.

Ukraine expands conscription, removes medical exemptions for HIV, hepatitis, mental disorders and more (archive.ph)

Now, the words and figures “with the exception of articles 2-c, 4-c, 5-c, 12-c, 13-c, 14-c, 17-c, 21-c and 22-c” have been removed from the Regulation, i.e. everyone will be recognised as fit under the “controversial” articles:...

One fraud happened and therefore everything with the word "conductor" in it is fraud afterward? The Jan Schon scandal was about single-molecule semiconductors, which have nothing to do with lead apatite superconductors.

Rebranding was so urgent that he didn't wait for a finished logo? I have to admit, I'm baffled. With his other changes I can at least imagine a thought process behind it, this one seems to be something he just woke up and decided to do all of a sudden.

Oh, neat. I did a lot of librarian work on Goodreads over the years but I eventually wore out when I realized I was working for Amazon for free. I'll take a look at this and see if any of the old librarian itch still needs scratching.

It seems clear to me at this point the Reddit admins are just making up whatever spur-of-the-moment idea they can come up with at any given moment. They had no idea that this shitstorm was coming and have no actual plan in place for dealing with it.

Keep the shitstorm spinning, I guess. The creativity of Reddit users collectively exceeds that of the admins.

I'm a fan of cryptocurrencies, and I would dearly love for the "speculative investment scam" aspect of it to be dead. It's been a massive drag on the technology's reputation for many years, preventing it from being used for all kinds of applications that would really benefit from some form of cryptocurrency integration. Unfortunately even if the "speculative investment scam" aspect dies the bad reputation will linger, so hopefully those applications will find ways to sneak it in where useful without drawing too much attention.
