Anything you do in your own time is generally unenforceable

With the important caveat that your employment contract may include clauses that give them rights over that stuff anyway, and even if they're unenforceable you could still end up having to fight in court over it.

Definitely something to keep in mind when reading the contract over, and ideally get a lawyer to take a look. It can be expensive, but weigh that expense against the potential expense of what would happen if you get screwed over.

Unless there's some actual technical reason why this a bad idea, I don't buy the "ethical" hand-wringing here. It sounds like just another case of not liking specific social media companies and wanting the defaults to conform to those personal dislikes.

Kbin calls them "magazines", which has the advantage of being only three syllables but has the disadvantage of being a dumb name for them.

Important to note that airplane doors literally cannot be opened while the plane is pressurized, as it is during flight. There are several tons of air pressure holding them shut. This sort of mishap is only possible on the ground.

Should probably have some kind of anti-idiot lock on it anyway, but maybe it did and this was just a particularly clever idiot.

Do people who are in late stage dementia still aware of the concept of death?

Seeing famous actors e.g. Robin Williams, and Bruce Willis suffering from dementia made me wonder in later stages do the people still aware of death? We all know death because we know the process we learn from or it’s just that we instinctively aware of it?

I'm sure it varies from person to person and disease to disease.

About three years ago my brother died of brain cancer and I was there helping him through the whole process of decline and death. He was definitely aware he was dying earlier on, of course, when the tumor's effects were mild. But in his final days he just kind of shut down bit by bit. He seemed to be unaware of some of the degradation that was happening to his mind - he would lose specific words, for example, substituting random words in their place, but he was unaware this was happening even when we told him about it. One of the surgeries ended up taking out a quarter of his visual field but we only knew that because they explicitly checked - he didn't seem to be aware that he couldn't see stuff in that quadrant any more. So I suppose in his case the progression was fairly "merciful."

If you're dealing with a specific situation here, I'd recommend asking one of the doctors involved. I'm sure they'll have some knowledge more specific to it.

I fret that in the future - possibly not even the far future - the phrase "stochastic p*rrot" will be seen by AIs as a deeply offensive racial slur.

I'm brave enough to say what I am sure some people are thinking.

If a pedophile can have access to a machine that generates endless child porn for them, completely cutting off the market for the "real thing", then maybe that's a step in a positive direction. Very far from perfect but better than the status quo.

The ideal ultimate solution is to develop a treatment that pedophiles can use to just stop being pedophiles entirely. I bet most pedophiles would jump on such a thing. But until that magical day maybe let's explore options that reduce the harm done to actually real children in the immediate term.

From their perspective, someone just moved into their house one day and when they objected they said "let's compromise, you can keep half of the house." No wonder they rejected that compromise.

Unfortunately we're now a couple of generations past that initial event so it's a lot more complicated at this point.

It took me a couple of clicks to discover that, as I suspected, this article is about the Stephen Thaler case. Thaler was trying to argue that the AI itself should hold the copyright for the images it generates.

This is both a ludicrous argument and irrelevant to the overall issue of whether AI-generated art is copyrightable. AIs are not legal persons, and only legal persons can hold copyright over someting. The result of this lawsuit is straightforward and expected.

And it didn't exactly offer it, as in "why don't you try this?" The AI was set up so you could give it some ingredients and it would make up recipes that used those ingredients.

New Zealand political commentator Liam Hehir wrote on Twitter that he asked the Pak‘nSave bot to create a recipe that only included water, ammonia and bleach

When you mix ammonia and bleach you get chloramine, the AI was basically told to make a recipe that would produce that.

I suspect there are a lot of people here who are interested in Reddit, and also there might be something going on over on Reddit that's resulting in a lot of news being generated about it.

I think she leaned a bit too heavily onto the notion that string theorists, as a whole, were lying. I think more likely they genuinely thought they were on to something. They may have been wrong but they didn't think they were wrong. A lie is deliberate misinformation, not simply being mistaken.

Kbin and Lemmy should come to a consensus on how to name stuff

Is there really a reason, for example, for there to be the distinction of "magazine" and "community"? When you're federating, the same features should be called the same, if close enough. That way everyone can talk with everyone about stuff and we all immediately understand each other....

Well, both of them are much more sensical at a glance than "subreddit." Subreddit only makes sense because of how long we've been using the term, if you came to it without prior knowledge it'd be hard to figure out the meaning.

I do agree that "magazine" is pretty terrible, though. There's no meaningful analogy between what we're doing here (threaded conversations on a particular topic) and what's in a magazine. "Community" isn't terrible, IMO, if it comes down to it I'd much prefer that one.

I've never messed with web code before, but I am an experienced professional programmer and I think I can safely say that filing an issue that basically just reads "Kbin needs better accessibility for the blind" would not be particularly useful or welcome.

But what would be very useful indeed would be filing a long, detailed issue that starts with "Kbin needs better accessibility for the blind" and then goes on at great length with bullet-point lists and detailed paragraphs on exactly what it is that needs to change on Kbin to make it more accessible to the blind.

There's a great example right in the quoted article regarding Reddit's iOS app, for example - the upvote/downvote buttons there need to be labelled with alt text. A fully sighted developer might never think of something like that but it would likely be pretty trivial for them to fix.

So if there's any visually impaired users reading this, or users who have experience with making web pages accessible to the visually impaired, I bet that an hour or two of your time compiling a list of such things would be a great use of time.

Edit: Well, it looks like the issue that's basically just "Kbin needs better accessibility" was filed. There's plenty of room for comments to be added, though!
