With spez ascending the last few remaining levels of becoming an absolute wanker, it's about time I got more active and I have been wondering how should I be using Lemmy efficiently? Like many I migrated from Reddit and I was primarly using Apollo to browse through my subscribed subreddits....
I would actually try to not subscribe to any beehaw communities if you’re not planning to be on beehaw since they’re defederating. I think that means anything you post on those communities can’t be seen by other servers?
You can browse on lemmyverse.net/communities for a list of every single (Lemmy-only) community.
There’s no equivalent browser site on kbin.
However, another way you can search and get pretty much/nearly all results is by using the community search on the large servers of lemmy and kbin. These large servers try to add every single community, so you can search for both kbin/lemmy communities on these
So for kbin, I use https://kbin.social/magazines
and you can search lemmy.world’s communities too. You can do searches on these even without an account
As me and many others, you might have encountered the problem, that tapping on a comment in your inbox doesn't get you to the comment and it's context. However, you can actually directly jump from the comments inbox to the correct comment + context in the post....
Oh I browse on mobile on the browser too. I think you can click the button with the 3 lines and click Subscribed instead of All to get your subs.
This is also janky atm, but if you want to see your list of the magazines you subscribed to, there actually is a way xD You click Profile, then there's a bunch of metrics (number of boosts you did, threads you made, etc. ), and you scroll to the right until you see "Subscribed". When you click that, it shows your magazines so you can go to them. I'm sure they'll make this a lot easier to get to in the future
What notifications do you have?
I have this
X Notify me of comments in my threads
X Notify me of replies to my threads comments
X Notify me of replies in my posts
X Notify me of replies to my posts comments
Notify me of new threads in a subscribed magazine <- I actually deselected this because I got too many notifications for me to look through
Ahh I see, yeah on your instance, I saw it's already called ADHD memes. Thanks, maybe I can contact the first person that subscribed to update the name displayed on kbin.
I don't knoww haha, because I would have to check on the original instance, and most of the time I just subscribe and move on.
I think on kbin.social one of the developers is adding the new communities very quickly so the display name is based on the address one.
When I do search on kbin.social however for a community, ones on lemmy won't show with the display name anyway I think; it will show the address like "adhd@lemmy.dbzer0.com"
I was able to find and add this community because of a reddit migration directory to show me this community is for adhdmemes :)
Thanks for responding so fast! I think you already did everything you could. I'm sure it will be better once someone is able to change the display title at least. I'm glad this community is taking off :)
you can click the Search button for the entire site lemmy.world (not search for community), and type the whole website address https://midwest.social/c/succulents , and then wait for it to find the link to the instance itself. Then you click Subscribe. It would add this to the communities search for lemmy.world if no one had added it yet
Won't that defeat the purpose of going on smaller instances to reduce the load on the servers though? I think I'd also have to make an account on that other instance if I wanted to make any comments/replies there.
Thanks for your answer. It's making sense to me. I do think this kind of thing might encourage more users to congregate on the large instances, but who knows, maybe it wouldn't be that bad if we continue making a new large instance if one fills up. Like how we have lemmy.ml, and now filling lemmy.world, and lemmy.world has a good experience.
I also am not entirely sure too how exactly the posts get populated, because I'm visiting some communities I added on that smaller server only a day ago, but it does show some posts from 7- 9 days ago (they don't have any new comments or anything), so yeah maybe I also don't completely understand how it works still. I added this one to the server I'm on - lemmy.studio - and I think I only added it today, but it's showing some from a few days ago: https://lemmy.studio/c/kbinMeta@kbin.social/data_type/Post/sort/Active/page/1
Do you think it's not good though that we might have to append those different filters to be able to get all the relevant items on the fediverse? Btw what exactly would your search query be? I'm curious because I don't actually know the rules for making the google search queries
I've heard you can do a google search and append say kbin.social to get results just from kbin, but if I wanted to treat the fediverse's content like reddit's, is there a way to do the google search on just everything that's on the fediverse?...
I guess my only concern left then is for the different aggregators, since I thought there wouldn't be any difference really between kbin and lemmy (or the others)
I think it won’t be able to get everything since the search result is the webpage that’s gonna be on different communities.
I tried these searches, and they have different results. I’d be missing some content on the fediverse on the topic if I didn’t remember to include all these
so complicated :o that's true, it's kind of another con of making an account on and staying on a small instance then. If the instance makes its own communities, and the instance plans to stay small ish to be a lot of decentralized servers, then the content might not be well searchable for the small instance. idkkkk, it feels like there's pros of the fediverse, but then sometimes it's like a double edged sword or something.
To see more magazines/communities, I click Magazines and then that page has a search bar for magazines (I search for the names of my reddit subreddits) and a list of a lot of them.
I think on redditalternatives, there's also a migration directory to show the corresponding subreddit to community/magazine
I hate the damage that Apple seems to have done in this regard. I also hate it when apps hide features because "they're for power users and regular users won't understand them"....
Maybe you can reword your title/description cuz I do get what you're saying. Many people are like "the fediverse sites/apps are so hard to use", but I think some of the features are just really new so it's like awkwardly placed just so they can at least get the feature out. Once I knew how to properly search for magazines on kbin (I think the regular search bar doesn't search magazines well, you have to hit Magazine tab and then do that search bar), create a thread, set my notification settings (the default is like no notifications, and no showing of NSFW), find what magazines I subscribed to, I started to have lots of fun, and I could see they are building these sites well.
