Actually, there are more cases of domestic violence than false accusations. How come we’re not worried about false accusations of robbery when they happen at the same rate as false accusations of sexual assault? Trust me, there are not karens lurking in every corner trying to make fake reports.
In our society where sexual assault is underreported, and one in 4 women experience domestic violence, why are you putting a comment that wouldn’t help this society improve on this front?
I'm a bit confused at the explosive growth of Lemmy and the slower growth of Kbin. Do the stats reflect the reality or is there a problem with the data being fed back to the various stat hubs?...
It iis easier to sign up for kbin I think because kbin lets you sign up with google or facebook. I did gmail google sign up because I like being lazy.
Kbin is slightly more confusing (they named everything a little weird), so if you do make a kbin.social account lmk or ask many questions about how to do stuff. It’s easy once I knew stuff like magazine = subreddit
I do think if they open with malicious compliance, it’s better than if they open with moderators that wanna replace and wanna do their best to keep the sub going
It probably goes against the philosophy or whatever of FOSS or Lemmy itself, but why not be a little evil so that you can actually sustain yourself? Donations can bring us far, but small non-intrusive ads can be a bliss in the skies for the people actually hosting the instance. Especially if there are millions of users uploading...
I think the instances themselves don't feel much different (for example the UI for lemmy.world and lemmy.studio is like exactly the same), but I feel like maybe there needs to be some quality of life tools to help a new instance succeed with more ease.
Like it's hard to know that the instance exists, so it'd be nice if the UI makes signing up for one as easy as possible,
One big con at the moment too is it's actually kind of hard for me to find communities in a small instance. The large instances somehow people already added like all of them, so I can search for pretty much all of them. I think to encourage joining new instances, ideally should give the creator an easy way to like just add every single community across different aggregators. Maybe even a bot that just automatically does this so it doesn't have to be updated, or at least give the creator of that instance that option if they so choose
Give easy way to migrate account. For example today I just learned about a website with a list of the kbin servers, and thought maybe I should move from kbin.social to put less strain on it. However, I made my kbin.social account with my gmail, and I prefer to be lazy and just log in through gmail. I can't make a new account on say kbin.chat with that same gmail account actually, so I'd have to use another email account, and I didn't want to do that. Also in my 2 days on kbin, I made a community, and if I just abandon my kbin.social account, I don't know who would be the "mod" of that community now. There's already some data I'd like to not have to start over on
that's fair, since the instance owners are hosting for us. The only thing is, I feel like the users might not know about this. I didn't really think about it until a little later that oh yeah, there is no [search for something "fediverse"] google search, and we're encouraged to join new instances and for the most part think of them as just servers to build the fediverse. I know I shouldn't try to box the fediverse ideas like reddit, but I am finding it frustrating that the decentralization is having these cons.
The only thing that'd be cool is if these community browsers could add the search for other communities as well, like for the kbin aggregator's communities. There's one called RedditMigration (https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration or @RedditMigration) that has more than 250 posts, and it's started on kbin.social. It would be cool to be able to search more easily other communities so that it's easier to find the content on the fediverse.
Kbin can improve its community search too but I am finding it easier to know about other communities not on kbin on its search. Whereas, on lemmy, maybe it's because I'm on a lower population instance, but it's very hard to find a community if it's not on lemmy, and I didn't already just know about it from the kbin account
I don't know if you've noticed this, but threads or comments about Lemmy or the Fediverse get downvoted a lot on Reddit and trolls who claim that it's "dogshit" and "not going anywhere" get systematically upvoted....
yeah that's what I'm struggling with too, like it'd be great if we could encourage people to try these, but at the same time I don't want to give them a bad first impression to turn them off forever if they can not stand it's still a baby project (understandable). I honestly don't think it's that hard to start using these fediverse products though, and I feel like the posts saying "lemmy will never take off", "kbin is too hard to use" only gave me barriers to start using it. And then when I did start, I was like oh this is great, everyone's talking, it's a close community
Why YSK: You don't need to load down the instance by uploading the image to the instance. You only need to know the syntax is on the following line:...
I don't know completely what you mean. I'm on kbin, so currently for me it shows a blue link "image" but it doesn't seem to do anything when I click it. Wonder if it looks different on lemmy
I've heard you can do a google search and append say kbin.social to get results just from kbin, but if I wanted to treat the fediverse's content like reddit's, is there a way to do the google search on just everything that's on the fediverse?...
aww that's kind of a bummer then, I'm a little sad since I thought this made it equal to reddit's search. I don't really care for reddit becoming good for stuff like tiktok/youtube shorts, but I like it a lot for being able to search easily for real people's inputs. I thought there was no con for federation since the content is shared, but the decentralization seems to make it harder to search that content in the fediverse
maybe the thumbnails will get better. kbin is very new still I think, so the site is more barebones atm probably compared to lemmy
What do you mean by community? Like the magazine?
I think microblogging is more like a Tweet, I think kbin is trying to integrate more with Mastodon which basically does tweets.
By the way if you want to add a Thread, which is reddit's "post", then I think you do it by Add a New Article. I was confused cuz there's no Add a new Thread, but I'm guessing you can do it with Add new link, photo, video, or article. Article means a text only thread I think.
Lol sometimes just being the one to bring others to the content is good though. I appreciate the content bringers on here, even if it’s just cross posting something else
“They’re shooting themselves in the foot,” Mir says. “The content of the users is what makes the platform worth visiting. These hosts kind of run into this confusion that their hosting is the reason people are going there, but it’s really for the other users on the medium.”
I think that is true that most people will not leave reddit. I’m in a subreddit called redditalternatives, and lately not many people are posting in it anymore. It definitely feels like a niche thing, but I think it’s okay. Reddit won’t last forever, and in the meantime, we can be seeing if fediverse is the way forward. This isn’t the first time reddit screwed up and it won’t be the last.
They’re also I think trying to become like tiktok and give lots of forever scrollable content, but I think tiktok/youtube shorts already fill that niche
So, I'm new to the Fediverse as it seems that Reddit is a sinking ship. I've been trying to figure out how to customize my feed so I only see content from the Magazines that I subscribe. Like how you can customize your feed on Reddit to only show posts from subreddits that you were in....
Glad you were able to find it :) I think one thing they could add for kbin is the ability to list like in a panel like reddit, the magazines you subscribed too so you can navigate to them more easily. Right now I have to search for the magazine I wanna go to each time.
Also at first I did the aame as you and selected to only show my subscribed for my feed, but later I realized since it’s still small, there’s not enough content yet, so now I just use the default All for my feed to get new stuff like every 30 min or so
This place has roughly 3,000 people and was intended to be an entire replacement for DaystromInstitute and StarTrek as they were going dark indefinitely. Give it time for sure, OP. I’m new :) I actually made an account 2 days ago, but it was bugging due to server load so I couldnt stay logged on.
Today though, I tried again and it works great, and I’m finding so far, it’s not as complicated as some redditors made it out to be. I think that was the reason for my hesitancy, so I think because of the cautions, people will be slower to try it out
Yeah for me I made the transition today feeling the same way as you. It sucks that just because mods try to go on strike, on behalf of everyone really, the users try to help reddit instead.
For me I’m making the change after being sure I won’t regret/miss too much the content on reddit. I might still go back sometimes for a google search (appending reddit), but for the most part, I’m not using it as a platform I browse.
Even if this fediverse stuff doesn’t pan out, I’m happy to tread these waters and see if it’ll be our future solution to avoiding these greed induced social media self destructions.
Today was the first day I just felt so sickened by how reddit just wouldn’t budge, no matter how disatisfied its users are. I just didn’t even feel good about using the site anymore, even if I love the content/lazy content there

Seems like a good portion of the activity in the communities is reddit oriented. If the goal is leaving/hurting reddit, it seems we should be continuing on like it doesn't exist, instead of continuing to drive interest to the site. Thoughts?
I've been seeing a lot of angst and emotion on the Reddit migration, which results in either defeatism or blind optimism. In the end, it probably doesn't matter, but I wanted to do more fact-based research into the subject....
