I just... don't care about reddit anymore. I really wanted these protests to succeed, but both the mods AND site admins revealed their true colors, and I ended up here. I fucking love kbin, and wouldn't go back even if reddit fixed its shit. Whatever happens with that site doesn't bother me one bit anymore.

I hope the protests go well, but I'm 100% certain that this is more a case of going out with a fizzle than with an explosion. I almost feel bad for them.

These are actually pretty cute, but again with the fucking app and online connection. I'd never have one of these in my house, let alone give one to my kids to play with unless I've disabled any network connectivity (but the simplest solution would be to just not buy one.)

Bingo. If Meta get their foot in the door, then the writing will be on the wall and the Fediverse as we know it today will slowly disappear. These huge corporations have extremely covert and efficient methods of influencing change and instilling their evil values which aren't fully-apparent until it's already too late.

If Meta get involved, personally, I'll be leaving, and will just accept that the internet will never again be allowed to exist in a free state; the system won.

EDIT: I also left all social media over two years ago, and this was largely because Facebook was making me remarkably unhappy and angry. I don't want them in my life full stop and have gone out of my way to rid my digital identity of any ties to corporate proprietary bullshit. I like it here precisely because it has no corporate overlord, and it makes me sick to think that Meta can just waltz back into my life in a space users largely want to be left alone in.

What shits me off the most about the push to return to the office by so many employers is that there's zero logic to it. I wish they'd just come out and say "we just want to be able to monitor and micromanage you at all times, also we need to justify this building lease we've signed." Fuck the HR script, just be honest about how little you care about your employees' happiness and preferences, even when WFH arrangements have been proven to only provide benefits to both parties (the issue is nuanced, I get that, but for the most part, work from home is very popular because workers largely prefer it.)

I'm being overly-dramatic here, but seeing one of the very few upsides to the pandemic being thrown away for no reason legitimately pisses me off. I've worked for myself for years now (as someone on the spectrum, I'm just incompatible with the illogical rules and weird workplace politics a lot of people either don't have a problem with, or are able to more effectively tolerate, as my varied job history will tell anyone), but if work from home was the normalized approach, I'd have likely been able to hold a normal job. I have seen a majority of my friends return to the office, despite things working really goddamn well for both them and their workplaces during WFH. None are particularly happy about it, but also none of them seem to care enough to raise the issue.

I get that people can find him annoying, but that plonker's video on dashcams actually helped me make a properly informed choice that literally saved me hundreds of dollars AND ensured I got something that actually had higher fidelity recording than many devices multiple times its price.

They could abandon their plans, apologize and then give everyone a cute puppy as a sorry, and I still wouldn't go back. Spez and his group of admins have shown their true colors, and it's because of them that I refuse to ever rejoin. Their actions this past week have been downright dictatorial, engaging in doublethink, hyperbole and creating rules when it benefits them despite no prior communication with the communities they've steamrolled by force.

As someone who recently had a 12 year old account, reddit and Spez can go fuck themselves.

A fucking laser gave me what I still maintain is my weirdest memory ever.

I was in my upstairs bedroom, shining my little handheld laser into the park across the road from my house. Since it was so dark, the laser dot seemed to travel an extreme distance compared to what I was used to during the day, so I was just enjoying pointing it at anything interesting - just random shit like reflective signs, trashcans, anything shiny or metallic.

After about five minutes, I decided to start toying around with the dot on a little sign that was sitting next to a small lake in the middle of the park, when all of a sudden, and I'm not really sure how to explain this, but I'll try; for a split second, the red light from the laser reflected off EVERYTHING in the vicinity for about 700 meters in all directions - all the reflective signs, any water surfaces, all the houses on the other side of the park, car windows, metallic objects, etc. I was so fucking taken aback, that I stopped and tried to contemplate what the hell had just happened. I was wide awake and this happened clear as day right in front of me.

To this day, I've still found no way of explaining how such a weak laser was able to a) reflect so much light off so many (hundreds) of surfaces simultaneously, if only for a fraction of a second, and b) if this is somehow a physical possibility, how perfectly everything in that park, alongside my own positioning from my house, would have had to align for each object to then perfectly - and without losing any luminosity - reflect the light into the next surface hundreds of times.

It's this shit that makes me think that just maybe those 'glitch in the matrix' people are onto something.

EDIT: So I guess to stick to the topic at hand, another use case for lasers is making me question the laws of physics.

Agreed. kbin has been thoroughly enjoyable so far, to the point that I kinda hope it remains a small, niche thing. I loved forums and smaller communities when I was younger in the early-mid 2000's, and this really is the first time I've been able to capture that feeling again since. I'm glad reddit is run by an egomaniacal dickhead, because without him, I'd never have gone looking for something better. It feels like people are slowly, but surely becoming tired of the 'corporate centralized internet', and are looking to branch out to smaller, but more meaningful free communities.

I'm actually excited for the first time in almost 10 years.

imo, simplifying your digital life is completely worth it. I personally have no social media outside of this site, have ads blocked on all my devices, use Brave as my browser (it has its issues, but for the most part, it does what I need it to), use GrapheneOS instead of Android, use ProtonMail instead of Gmail, and access YouTube through a NewPipe fork that integrates SponsorBlock, use Signal as my messenger (or SMS otherwise.) This generally has kept me from doomscrolling and wasting my mental energy throughout the day, and now that I no longer have a reddit account, I'm even better off than I was before.

At some point I realized that life with so many modern conveniences and centralized power just made me unhappy. I absolutely believe there's merit to the idea that not everything needs to be made as easy and accessible as possible. Humans need time away from the internet, and they need some kind of challenge, even if it's as simple as needing to use SMS instead of Facebook Messenger, or have an algorithm shove what it THINKS you want to see in your face 24/7.

Anyway, I'm rambling. Basically, I agree with you haha

I don't care if it gets even remotely as popular either, and almost hope it doesn't. I've been having a great time here, and the userbase is a fraction of the size of reddit. I believe this is a huge reason it's so refreshing; anytime the majority flood a platform, the quality of discussion and content drastically drop. This place is small and niche enough to allow meaningful communities to form.

I haven't enjoyed the internet this much since the mid-00's.

This kind of thing is very Black Mirror. I chose to remove social media from my life years ago for my own mental health, and I've been much happier since. This shouldn't create a barrier for anyone who has also decided to make an informed personal decision regarding their online presence for whatever reason.
