Howdy, everyone! Where are my fellow users at? Hoping to connect with a new group of people.

Iโ€™m @QuillDriven, and Iโ€™ve had a but of a typewriter problem for about ten years now. My current daily drivers are a 1938 Royal Speed King, a late โ€˜20s Royal Quiet Ten, and an . Currently working on a nonfiction book and some short articles.

@lowqualityfacts A highly cultured take on headwear that I fully agree with.

Indiana Jones and Flash flopped hard. Could this be the beginning of the end for franchise films?

For the last few years franchise movies like star wars, marvel, etc. made money regardless of quality. However now it seems like audiences are being choosier when it comes to these kinds of tentpole releases. Iโ€™ve seen some people online say that the movie/theater industry is losing people in general but I donโ€™t think...

@echoplex21 After Endgame, the only Marvel movie that interested me was GotG3. Now that I've seen it I'm done.

What I think kbin needs to do to survive, and why I think it has a better chance than any other Reddit alternative I've seen yet.

Iโ€™m a Reddit refugee who was on that platform for 10+ years. I saw not just a tremendous amount of controversies, but attempts at introducing alternatives to Reddit during all of them. The 2015 blackout saw a ton of alternatives suggested, and if you go back and look at them many have either not survived or never achieved...

@RemembertheApollo I'm putting 'binheads' forward for consideration. Easier to say than 'Kbinaut' and only slightly straighter laced than 'binners.'

These are roughly the books Iโ€™ve acquired this year, some of them studied the shit out of, some left untouched.

Thereโ€™s been a distinct shift back towards philosophy and politics, after 10 years of mostly technical and scientific stuff, and Iโ€™m ok with it. I feel I now have the tools to really build on it (zettelkasten, blog, adderall, peace of mind, autism).

@mnl Save the peace of mind, blog, and adderall, Iโ€™m in the same boat! My studies are aimed more in the direction of sociology/gender studies (incredibly useful, I know) than psychology but I have some books on my list. What zettelkรคsten resources have you used for your practice?

@mnl
Iโ€™ve never actually come across that site before--Iโ€™m gonna have to give it a good once-over. Thanks!

I took a gander at How to Take Smart Notes, Luhmannโ€™s paper, and zettelkasten.de in order to figure it out. Itโ€™s been going relatively well, Iโ€™d say. Mine really took off around the first of the year.

@asteroidrainfall I spent pretty much all morning binging his videos waiting for my new syphon filters to arrive. His voice is so soothing!

QuillDriven,

@asteroidrainfall I inherited a 1940s Silex syphon coffee maker and was making do with the original fabric filter until it just couldnโ€™t hold on anymore (general guidance is to fully replace the filter once per month when used daily). I was able to order three ten-packs of replacement filters from eBay and thatโ€™s doing the trick!

I freakin love this coffee maker. It makes the smoothest cups of coffee that I have ever had, hands-down. Completely worth the extra work in my opinion.

A question for anyone using a or similar system - How do you know when to link one Zettel/note to another? And how do you find where the material you want to reference is? Does it not really break the flow of creating notes?

QuillDriven,
QuillDriven avatar

@conorf Something I caught in your question:

`Does it not really break the flow of creating notes?โ€™

I donโ€™t try to add links while writing; I wait until Iโ€™m integrating the note to add them. Itโ€™s functionally similar to the practice of separating writing from editing. If you want a more focused zettelkรคsten community, zettelkasten.de has a forum!

How do you retell the idea in your own words?

That's a big struggle for me. When I was learning about Zettelkasten, the idea of immediatly writing in your own words the summary of a chapter feels daunting. What if I use the wrong words and wouldn't understand later? What I want is to have notes from the book and then use them to write summary maybe in a week after reading a...

QuillDriven,
QuillDriven avatar

@PsychrolutesMarcidus Itโ€™s definitely something that you have to practice, so donโ€™t feel overwhelmed!

I personally donโ€™t write a summary immediately, instead taking little notes of specific thoughts in the text I want to remember. Those little notes are in my own words. Then, I scan the notes to see how many talk about the same idea, and use my short notes as a framework to build a zettel.

Itโ€™s important that you understand the idea. If you lack understanding, itโ€™s hard to write a zettel that encapsulates the idea well enough to sensibly use it years down the line.
