All five Mississippi deputy sheriffs accused of beating and sexually assaulting two Black men before shooting one of them in the mouth have been fired.
Moving over from Reddit, I don't want to just lurk here, so I thought I'd introduce myself by mentioning the last science fiction novels I read along with how I enjoyed them. I just reread what I wrote and I believe they are spoiler-free, though I may be corrected on that point....
I liked Translation State as well, though for me, the midsection was the drag. I noticed she started doing a lot of time skips and admittedly during that point there wasn't a lot going on, but it got tedious. Finally they got to the Treaty station and then things picked back up again. I know she was developing the character's internal world and opinions and expectations, but with how mysterious the Presger faction is and all the talking around a point -- it dragged for me.
This headline is clickbaity over exaggeration. It didn't "gut protections". The protections were already pretty terrible so this was more of a clarification. Prior, the court had sort of waffled on what "true threat" meant. This... didn't really help a great deal but it did clarify that both the reasonable person test and the reckless disregard tests had to be applied. I recommend reading Ken White's article https://popehat.substack.com/p/supreme-court-clarifies-true-threats. The big takeaway:
So. To the practitioner, or to the internet tough-talker, what does this mean? It means that the law of the land, at least 7-2, is that a threat is only outside the protection of the First Amendment if:
A reasonable person, familiar with the context, would interpret the threat as a sincere statement of intent to do harm, and
The speaker was reckless about whether the threat would be taken sincerely — that is, they “consciously disregarded a substantial risk” that it would be taken seriously.
Colorado's law played pretty loose with the reckless disregard aspect.
All that said, we need a better test, or better criteria to sort between some kid on LoL forums who trash talks and gets some mother in Canada worried (this actually happened) and when a woman reasonably fears for her safety based on persistent stalking.
I will admit that I rather liked the subreddit distinction between 'scifi' and 'printsf'. My interest is almost wholly in books. Reiterating what the best SF movies of the last month/year/decade/century isn't really anything I'm interested in. I probably saw it. On the flip side, the 1000th recommendation of why Dune is amazing is also pretty old. I realize I'm coming at this after being an enthusiast for a long time and I don't want to deny anyone their entry point into the genre, so we need a balance of ideas.
I guess that's a long way from a recommendation of what to do. A currently reading weekly thread might be good though. I do like finding new authors -- new to authoring and older-but-new-to-me -- and maybe that would be a good way to get some traffic going. Could split it into a separate weekly "what are you seeing?" kind of thread too for those who are finding or revisiting shows on video.
The Supreme Court rejected the independent state legislature theory in a bombshell decision Tuesday, turning back a right-wing attempt to vest the sole power in administering federal elections with state legislatures.
I honestly don't know. Nothing Alito or Thomas has said recently has made any sort of logical or philosophical sense. I think Roberts is trying to preserve some semblance of legacy of unbias with the current court reputation which is why I think he's sided the past few cases where he has.
As I said in another post, I believe Justice Roberts is trying to haul the reins back from the stampeding conservafascists. Not that his own tendencies don't lie that way, but he's widely reported as caring about his legacy, and right now the reputation of SCOTUS for corruption and poor decisions seems to me to be at an all time high. (That is to say, I'm not a deep SCOTUS scholar, just an observer -- there might be a time when the organization was worse.)

Holy crap, thank you. I was thinking of the top bar as the shortcuts on Reddit (or Reddit Enhancement Suite) and I turned it on. I have no idea why it would remove the search capability for Magazines since it's functionally impossible to actually show everything on that line. However, we're in a new world now. So glad you figured that out. This is the way.
Babylon 5 : The opening monologue and music score was amazing every time. Definitely an older vibe with this one with flashing images of the cast up as it progressed, but it was very good.
Westworld Season 1 : I think it was mainly the same for later seasons with slight variations. The simple piano tune building for the whole intro was beautiful and while watching back to back would absolutely let it run maybe every other episode, or every third.
Eureka Season 1 : The score by Mothersbaugh and quirky art is really fun and conveys the definite style of the show.

I ask because I like console, but at the same time have difficulties remembering all the commands. I'd like to try a GUI that is comfortable to use with only a keyboard....
I use GK for everything and usually only use CLI when there's something a little exotic. I like seeing it update in real time on another screen and I like the diff engine for quickly assessing changes and making sure everything I expected was altered and nothing I didn't. I know there are other tools but GitKraken is the fastest for me.
Also have found it a good tool for teaching other engineers (usually older) how Git works. We tried out Sourcetree but it was super clunky at the time.
If I had to find a tool between pure CLI and pure GUI I'd probably recommend Emacs Magit porcelain. Works quite well.

This is tough since it's a part of the executive branch and as a result not wholly independent of who is in office. It'd be nice to have a wholly impartial investigation organization, but even then it's still staffed with humans, all with their own virtues and vices, perspectives and prejudices.
I"m about 1/3 to 1/2 of the way through Translation State by Ann Leckie. Pretty good story set in the same universe as her other Imperial Radch novels.

That's the same sensation I found with leaving Twitter and joining Mastodon. I found that I was more inclined to engage rather than simply read information, and it was more straightforward to curate the information and people I wanted to follow.
Yeah this matches my usual interview advice. If you're feeling nervous about the interview, try to turn it around in your head. Pretend you are interviewing THEM. Assume they're going to want you, what do you want to know about them that's going to make you say yes to them.
I know it doesn't always work that way, personal pressures and needs can make it hard to flip that script, but I really think if you approach an interview believing it to be an equal stakes conversation rather than one side having all the power, it goes a lot better.

I honestly don't know. I only just found out about BookWyrm from that post on Mastodon. Interestingly, the text of the toot was autoposted into the text box when I put the link into the link box. That text is from Rambling Readers! I don't want to misattribute things.
That said, I think there's a chance. It would probably show up in the "Microblog" portion of the magazine. That is setup to pick up on hashtags in the Fediverse and so if BookWyrm federated made a post that had a particular hashtag, it might show up here.
But in short, I simply am unsure all the intricacies of the fediverse here. I've really only interacted with Mastodon up to this point (and it's gone well)
