If you're in the mood for a 5h22m documentary (big if, I know, but for those of you who are into this sort of thing), Bismuth's The Complete History of the A Button Challenge is phenomenal.

For the longest time, the biggest obstacle to a full 0x 70 star run was Bowser in the Fire Sea. 70 star routing can just pick out 70 stars that don't need A presses, skip the ones that do, but Bowser levels are required to beat the game (the sequence breaks used in true any% would require pressing A to Backwards Long Jump). In this level Mario has to climb a pole and press A to dismount.

Five years ago, a glitch was found with how the Wii Virtual Console handles floating point rounding. If you enter the level and leave the console on overnight, moving platforms will slowly drift upwards as floating point errors propagate, eventually getting Mario to the top of the level without having to climb that pole. Now we had proof that 0x is possible.

AFAIK there weren't any new discoveries that went into this run since then, someone just had to pick out 70 stars that were humanly viable and then sit down and do the full run. But it's still a huge achievement to see that full run finally happen!

ABC is far from over though, a full 120 run still requires 13 A presses, and uses a lot of TAS-only tricks that a human will never do. Some of these may be saveable if new discoveries are found. That pole relies on Wii VC, while three A press saves in Tick Tock Clock rely on JP 1.0 which is only on console, so a different glitch that works on N64 would be the holy grail. You may have also heard memes about "half A press notation", referring to a few stars that require the A button to be held down - since other stars still require A presses, you just keep the button held down afterwards without having to press it again, but if all other A presses were saved these would still be another barrier preventing true 0x 120.

Many still are, but 70 star offers a lot of flexibility in routing to just pick the stars that are RTA-able.

I'm curious what the A count for RTA 120 could be. TAS is 13x, but humans will need more.

Pannenkoek does have a few videos documenting stars that can be beaten with No Joystick Allowed strats (these are old and there are more on the secondary UncommentatedPannen channel but I don't see a playlist compiling them). A full run is definitely not possible, but at least some stars are doable.

I really miss the keyboard on my old Motorola Droid 2. Still wasn't any good for gaming honestly, but it's way better for typing than a touchscreen.

Bear in mind that Kirby Air Ride came out in 2003, on a console that's only meant to be hooked up to CRTs. How many users back then do you think would've had access to this feature in the first place? Or would still be playing this game if/when they upgrade later?

Gamecube doesn't have enough RAM to preload everything at startup like that, you have to go through the menus and pick a game mode and map to load.

Surely if it needed that startup load anyway, then Sakurai wouldn't be saying he turned the license down in order to get players in the game faster. I'm going to trust Sakurai's word here!

Puyo Puyo. The three best games in the series were Puyo Puyo 15th Anniversary, Puyo Puyo 20th Anniversary, and Puyo Puyo Chronicle (25th in all but name). None of these games ever got released outside of Japan, but after the crossover did well overseas there were high hopes in the community we'd get a similar mainline game for the series' 30th anniversary.

I wrote a very long essay about how that didn't happen, and the state of the series ever since. And a more recent followup video on Sega's newest blunder.

Refusing to treat people with the barest minimum of respect is not a "personal opinion", it's behavior that no space should tolerate.

Desktop audio streaming has never worked. Bug report has been outstanding since the beginning and Discord has just... never addressed it.

I saw a recent post that 60% of playtime in 2023 was spent on games 6 years or older. What 6+ year old games are you playing?

I haven’t stopped playing Overwatch since it came out, still getting on with friends 2 or 3 nights a week and putting in a few hours (and I’m still awful lol). I also still log on to Battlefield 1943 from time to time to get in a few matches....

I'm never not playing Skullgirls. Somehow still going, Marie DLC just dropped last week.

While my 2021 essay did aim to be as thorough as I could in criticizing PPT itself, all of my criticism of the game is secondary to my greater criticism of how Sega handled the series afterward. I wonder if being too thorough may have caused that thesis to be lost in the woods, but I hope this video today hammers that point back home.

If Sega had followed up PPT1 with a full mainline game, using its commercial success as a jumping off point for the series to go onto bigger and better things, I wouldn't be so frustrated today. But instead of doing that... we got Apple Arcade.

Yeah, the online being fake is appalling. Sega knew in advance that this game would be completely dead online, meaning no one's playing it. They knew what would happen and they took this deal anyway.

What do you define as them "winning"? You can say that out and open neo-nazis will never make up a majority of the voting populace. But they don't need to be a majority to do real damage, and they shouldn't be ignored just because they're under 51%.

Look at everything that's been happening already. Trump. Bolsonaro. Brexit. The repeal of Roe v. Wade. The erosion of LGBT rights. These are real issues, and they will not go away if we close our eyes.

And outside of just legislation they pass, consider a more human perspective. Each and every impressionable person that gets suckered into their ideology, that they teach to hate, that's a tragedy already. We need to do everything we can to save people from hate.

All of these issues absolutely are cause for concern. The more I read you trying to pretend they're not, the more I'm beginning to wonder if you're just a fash in disguise.

Important point of clarification, the level isn't truly impossible, a TAS proves it's theoretically winnable. Bombs5 by the same author turns out to also have been TAS, but was beaten anyway.

The issue is that if the author themself couldn't do it humanly, then the community doesn't consider it legitimate. It's disqualified, the author even came out and said Team 0% should be declared victorious.

That said, several players are still grinding it anyway. They've come too far to stop now, consider it the optional postgame superboss so we can get the True Ending. And I really hope it happens.

I'd been on the microblog side of Fedi for a while, when Reddit shat the bed I went to check out the link aggregator/forum. But it's a long way from ever being able to replace what I used Reddit for: communities for niche microinterests. And I'm not optimistic it'll ever get to that level. We have a slow moving frontpage for memes and world news but that's about it.

I still keep the tab open and poke my head into it from time to time, but I don't do much more than lurk because there's not much for me to see here. I'm still not going back to Reddit either, but that just means I'm a hermit living in a cave now.

There were a lot of valid conversations to be had about journalistic integrity. Which made it all the more damning that Gamergate never once had any of these conversations, ever.

What answer would have satisfied you? You started off aggressive and combative in the OP, then acted surprised when you were met in kind.

What's (are) the funniest/stupidest way(s) you've broken your linux setup?

Tinkering is all fun and games, until it’s 4 am, your vision is blurry, and thinking straight becomes a non-option, or perhaps you just get overly confident, type something and press enter before considering the consequences of the command you’re about to execute… And then all you have is a kernel panic and one thought...

Built a new desktop, backed up everything on my old laptop, next step was to format an Arch installer USB. Instead of formatting the USB, I formatted my laptop's /boot partition. No big loss since I had the backup and was done with that old toaster, but oops.

I picked up a Miyoo Mini Plus earlier this year as an impulse buy, and ended up liking it enough that I regret not buying a higher end model with analog sticks. Still, don't know if it's worth trying to upgrade now - I'm waiting for the day we can get a full SteamOS device in this form factor.

Youtube has a captive audience that isn't going anywhere. The platform is too big to die, and too expensive for any challenger to seriously threaten it. And the only users they stand to lose with this move are the users who are costing them money, they don't care if adblock users leave as long as they keep everyone else.
