So the work I do is 100% remote now. I moved to Southern California because of an industry that has in part moved to remote work. My only requirements are a temperate climate, nature access and hopefully a blue-ish state. Is there a place out there that makes sense financially? I’m hoping to buy a house less then 500k. I...
I'd say the best places to reside in Michigan are going to be in the lower half of the Lower Penninsula if you want a temperate climate. Doesn't mean winter won't fuck your shit up at least two or three times a year.
Beautiful nature spots are a day trip or long weekend away and quite lovely, though smaller in scale than the sprawling, mountainous naturescapes of California. We don't have anything quite as epic as Big Sur, Lake Tahoe, or the Redwoods here (souece: Michigander lived 13 years in the Bay Area), but we do have some very lovely areas and they're imo much more accessible for the average Joe. Oh yeah and when fall comes in, the color is AMAZING. It's a rather flat state all in all, though. Most places you have to drive to see anything rolling lamdscape-wise. It makes winter with all of the leaves off of the trees rather bleak if you're in sputhern Michigan.
But, there's a lot of interesting lore that you don't really get anywhere else like Great Lakes shipping/shipwrecks, bootlegging hotspots, a fucking shit-ton of musical history, tons of breweries and local agricultural festivals. If you're willing to pick and choose your urban areas, you can definitely find those spaces that have a Californian vibe about them, but they're not really centralized.
Not to be one of those people that yaps on about that aggregator site that makes money leaching off of content provided and moderated by users or anything, but this would be my first instance of hopping onto something posted to the Fediverse that was unexpected and awesome and so much fun!
@Fuzzy_Dunlop
It's more like if you find the Lower Decks characters in the crossover amusing, then you'd probably enjoy Lower Decks, but the episode isn't written in a way that you have to know that show to enjoy it.
@Greedy_Refugee I could not figure out Soundgarden. I would have drawn a more botanical garden looking thing if I was the artist. I was all "music plants? Note field? Field notes? Music plot?"
@massive_bereavement Yeah, Night of the Hunter is what I'd call suspense with horror elements. It definitely crosses that line into horror at a few key moments. And it's a classic not a lot of people mention nowadays.
Another oldie that I really like is Whatever Happened to Baby Jane. It's super campy but so creepy, and I'm not 100% on that one really being a horror movie either but it does that same kind of thing Night of the Hunter does where it veers into horror at several moments.
@thesebits Definitely. I remember as a kid in the 70s all of this innovation and research into getting us off of fossil fuels being taught to us and a real sense of optimism about the future and science. So much changed for the better or was moving in the right direction then fucking Reagan and the Bushes and greedy cronies like Gingrich come into power and ripped all of that away.
@demvoter That thread is the only thing I've visited Reddit to look at since RIF stopped working. Glad to see they're ditching Twitter. It's such a hateful shitshow now.
@Lord_Fluffington this angle doesn't look real to me. At this point JFK has pretty much half his head blown off and Jackie wasn't trying to get away.
Morbidly enough it's pretty obvious if you watch the Zapruder footage that she's having an irrational traumatized response and trying to gather up all of the bits and pieces of his head that had been blown off.
…but I don’t want to get rid of it! Been using RIF since 2011 and it’d feel so weird to take it off my home screen. I tried the Reddit app but it pollutes the front page with so much unnecessary shit that it becomes a chore to browse. Liking the look of Lemmy so far though.
The world can be a pretty strange place, but it's good to look back and find at least one thing that was good to you today. Be that a nice conversation, a cool picture you saw, a song you heard... whatever! But if you didn't find anything good today, here's your sign: go do one thing for you, right now. Even if its just a moment...
I think the biggest thing we need to figure out is how to make it sound easier than people say it is. People get too hung up on the technicalities of how the fediverse works, and they never try it out and see that it isn't as confusing as it sounds. If we could write up a simple blurb to help promote kbin to subreddit moderators...
That's me! It reminds me a lot of browsing reddit for the first time way back in '09 or so, or the chans before they went to shit. There's a lot of different stuff on different instances, but I figure the longer I spend navigating and posting/commenting, the clearer the communities/magazines I want to be a part of will become.

How can we smooth out the migration and help promote kbin/lemmy to subreddits and redditors?
