I have a ROG Ally and a Steam Deck. The Steam Deck experience is miles ahead. Windows is such a limitation on these handheld devices (and dare I say PC gaming in general). SteamOS is the real MVP behind the Steam Deck, it makes everything feel seamless.

The Ally feels like a crappy ASUS launcher stapled on top of an unoptimized Windows desktop, since that’s exactly what it is.

Also, the ASUS ROG Ally controls are nowhere near as nice as the Deck’s. The Deck sticks feel better. The touchpads allow for mouse control.

I'd like to second what Veraxus said. I have a steam deck and the ease of use factors are off the chart. At this point my gaming PC sits nearly entirely unused, I do everything on my steam deck, even playing Caves of Qud lol

I’ve been running NixOS for the past four years in all my computers. It’s really, really the end game of Linux distributions for me. But it’s not for everybody. The Nix language can be a tough thing to learn, if you’re not a programmer and haven’t done anything with lazy functional languages before. It’s a dynamic language, with not super great documentation for practical things and missing a good language server that would let you to jump to definitions when learning how nixpkgs work and how to build things.

Also, what I think is a serious problem, is how flakes are not yet enabled in the default installation. So first you learn with the basic template, and some helpful person comes talking about how great flakes are, and in a few weeks you might have written your own system flake finally and got it working. Flakes are really important to understand as soon as possible, because with them you get the lock file that gives you real reproducibility between computers and full control on which version of packages you get.

But, when you learn all that, and get your company to go full-on with nix, having flakes in all projects, it’s the best programmer’s operating system out there. Here’s my config to steal stuff.

I’ve played all the Souls games and Elden Ring to 100% but Sekiro I couldn’t make it more than a few hours into before it became unbearable. I decided to install a mod to slow time down by 50% so I could better understand the timing. I still couldn’t fucking play it!

I recently bought Hi-Fi Rush and spent a solid week absolutely hating myself. I realized that my timing is piss poor and I have absolutely no rhythm and every time I played the game I lost a little respect for myself, until… I installed it on my SteamDeck. Now suddenly I’ve gone from D rankings to S rankings?

So I went back to my PC and dug out my old Xbox 360 controller, plugged it in and… yep. I’m fucking great at Hi-Fi Rush. It was the damn latency from the wireless controller. Weird thing was none of the latency settings in the game helped. Because Zeus knows I tried every one hoping it wasn’t me.

Long story short, I really need to reinstall Sekiro and give it a try with a wired controller.

As was already stated, capitalism is unsustainable. It seeks infinite growth in a world of finite resources. Capitalism will almost always place short term financial gain over long term issues.

There are only two financial classes. The owner class and the working class. It doesn’t really matter if you make 30k a year or 300k a year. If you sell hours of your life for a salary, you are part of the working class. Capitalists make passive income off others labor. Being “pro-capitalism” is essentially saying that you’re okay giving all but the littlest amount of value you produced to someone else. This is paraded as a good thing in the United States.

We don’t know if they do, but they certainly can. Especially if you are on x86. I’m sure Android (which comes from OEMs) and iOS devices spy on you.

No, you have no respite unless you switch to custom. The good part is that this process is much easier than before (especially on the desktop), and will keep getting easier. Graphene already has their Web installer when you plug your mobile into your computer and let it do its job. Installing Linux is the easiest it has ever been, and I would argue that this trend has creeped into even the more advanced distributions like Gentoo/Funtoo (their guide is extremely well written and easy to follow + forums).

The only thing you are losing is time. If you don’t have the time, then no, you should stick with the easier ROMs/Distributions. I would never espouse using Windows/MacOS/OEM Android/iOS unless forced to by circumstance.

Generally listening is best but there’s no universal answer to a question like this. People are complex. Some people want to be consoled, some people want feedback, some people want to be challenged, etc

But a general first line of defense is hear them out, comfort when appropriate, and don’t make it about you (“oh that’s crazy it’s like this one time I…”)

They can already access the data, it's all federated and it's all publically available effectively by definition, they don't need to launch a platform that interacts with Fedi in order to scrape it. And Meta will only be able to scrape user profiling data on the people accessing Fediverse through their own tools and platforms. In the large term, all data is useful and getting the additional facets of how their users interact with a twitter-like platform is good - but I don't think that's really why they chose to federate.

But...

What joining Fediverse does offer them is a way of launching their Twitter-rival product with genuine and organic content or activity already present.

Facebook & Instagram's primary demographics are not internet pioneers, they don't tend to build new things - they feed off existing activity and build on top of it. They access the platforms to consume content, and only move to creating or posting content over time as they develop networks on the sites. Meta cannot realistically launch a Twitter competitor whole-cloth. The sort of people who joined Twitter early to build that space aren't joining a Meta product, likewise the people who join new platforms or normal fediverse.

If it launched empty, it would remain empty. People would check it out, see almost no content or no content they care about, and not come back. Meta can only realistically launch a product like Threads with activity already occurring, and things like AI content or fake profiles aren't necessarily convincing enough to lure in the punters. But Fedi is preexisting and active and there's already A Thing there that Meta can point their users at, there's already content to consume and people to interact with.

Valve really has contributed to Linux gaming so heavily. It felt insane playing through GTAV on my steam deck and it ran really well. I honestly don't think anyone expected it to ever get this good. I certainly didn't.

+1 for the 'selfhosting' communities.

If the battery is so shot it's basically tethered, you could use it like a server. My gateway drug into that world was spinning up some Docker containers to do some of the neat things others have suggested (media server - Plex/Jellyfin; DNS adblocking - Pihole; home automation - Homeassistant).
