the only thing that's worrying me about the subreddits closing indefinitely (even though I wholeheartedly support it), is that people are going to use even more closed off, unsearchable platforms as alternatives. /r/unixporn mods say their only "official" alternative is currently their Discord "server".
edit: the message on /r/iPhone also directs people to their Discord. sigh.
the problem we're talking about is that that won't be possible if communities will move to platforms that require creating an account in order to access.
I used to play a lot of PUBG on mobile. one of the most active players in our group was a girl and she was an absolute beast. doubly so if she got her hands on an M762.
You underestimate the hatred people in Fedi have for FB
I wish. I've seen many a Mastodon thread about it, with people both knowledgeable and passionate about Fediverse definitely not being negative about it. Evan Prodromou (https://cosocial.ca/@evan), for example, has had a discussion a while ago claiming that embrace-extend-extinguish actually doesn't work, and how Meta is going to be "locked inside with us" rather than us with them.
they're heavily pro-Russia and pro-China, remove comments criticizing violation of human rights by China, and use phrases like "Ukrainian invasion" and downvote people who say that hey, it's Russia who's the bully.
This question is especially for people who have joined in the last week. Have you used other fediverse platforms or is this your first time really using one? What do you think of it so far? Are you aware that you can comment on Lemmy posts with a Mastodon account?
I've created my first Mastodon account five years ago, but wasn't using it too much until 1-1.5 years ago if I remember correctly, when it pretty much replaced Twitter for me.
Personally I think not having karma limits is nice currently! I understand why they were used but grinding karma as a lurker on reddit was frustrating.
I prefer the looks of Piped (accessed through LibreTube on Android, so I get to sync my subscriptions on desktop and mobile and still have no ads), but Invidious is pretty great as well.
I remember there was a similar front-end before Invidious, but they got shut down by Google. I can't remember the name for the life of me, only that it was similar to Youtube's so that you only had to change a few letters in the URL to open the videos through it. Newtube? Viewtube?
Specifically, I'm trying to post (an image) to boston@lemmy.ml from my account on kbin.social. The post shows up on kbin.social, but when I go to https://lemmy.ml/c/boston, it doesn't seem to be there. Is there something special I need to do to ensure it's viewable?
it looks like it's federating, but with a delay. the post I've sent from kbin to Beehaw's community wasn't visible on their website yesterday, but it did sync overnight.

okay, so I posted this via kbin to technology@beehaw.org, but when I view that community through Beehaw's website it's not showing in that community. am I tripping, is it because of the current traffic issues, or is my understanding of the Fediverse completely wrong and I'll have to set off on a journey of finding myself all over again?

Is Lemmy your first time on the Fediverse?

What kinds of things from reddit would you like to see Lemmy avoid as the user base grows?

so, which Big Tech company do you think is going to shit the bed next and popularize its Fediverse/FOSS equivalent in the process?
I'm personally crossing my fingers for Discord.
