A lot has happened in the graphics community in the last ten years, especially when it comes to physically based rendering (PBR). It started to become popular around 2009, as hardware made more powerful models affordable, and really took over … Continue reading →
A ton of moderators have been making changes to their subreddits' rules (e.g., only allowing certain posts, going NSFW, loosening rules a ton) to protest without getting kicked out. Do you think this strategy of turning a subreddit into shitposts is effective or not?...
Seeing the response from reddit admins, it clearly has had some effect. It may not be as impactful as everyone may like but anything is better than just rolling over and submitting without a fight.
Two U.S. food companies have received the go-ahead to sell chicken grown from cultivated animal cells in a production facility. It's the first time meat grown this way will be sold in the U.S.
There are some setting for reply notifications. I enabled them all and get notifications for replies. It might be good to have them enabled by default tho.
Around 2017-2018, there used to be a huge circlejerk online about how Fortnite was the dumbest thing ever, to the point where "Fortnite bad, Minecraft good" was part of the infamous Keanu Chungus 100 meme. Why did it get so much hate, and why did it stop?
I think it was a combination of it being new at the time and there being a lot of kids playing it. Older teens/young adults often tend to not want to play with young kids. I remember everyone used to complain about, and make fun of kids (aka twelvies) playing COD. I seem to also remember people making fun of Minecraft because it was for kids. As for why it stopped, I think it just got old. The hivemind moved on to hating something else. People grew up a bit, the 12 year olds are now 17? (bloody hell time flies).

We're getting towards the mid-point of the year, and (unless I've missed it) I can't seem to find a thread for discussing what our favourite games of the year have been....
No Man's Sky. It had a really rough launch but the devs have put a lot of work into it these past few years and its pretty good now. Excellent game for just chilling, flying around and exploring.
My ex from Norway mentioned how unusual it was that so many places and people here fly our flag (USA), so I was curious to hear what it's like for others here on the fediverse.
Yeah every time I see someone with a flag at their house I ask myself why? Whats the point? Everyone here knows we're currently in Australia and flying a flag doesn't really do anything otherwise.
If you love adventuring as Lara Croft or want to see why Tomb Raider has been so successful, you can grab the action game for almost nothing on Steam right now.

I love what @ernest has built and I'm amazed at the amount of work he is able to put in kbin.
I've seen a couple of questions about third-party apps for kbin, and while that would be nice in the future, I think the mobile version of the site works pretty well.
I was wondering if there are plans to make the web version an installable progressive web app (pwa)?
#kbin works like this: Upvotes/downvotes do not cross instances. Lets say this post has 100 upvotes on kbin.social and no one on kbin.social votes on it ever again. Over on anotherInstance.net it gets 222 upvotes. Those votes only stay on anotheInstance.net and kbin.social continues to show only 100 upvotes. Do I have that right?
Found the kbin-mobile GitHub, cloned the repo and tried to build the app with flutter but it keeps running into errors with the Google dependencies. I'm not at an expert at these things and idk why they didn't just provide an apk in the releases section.
Has anyone successfully built the apk who would be willing to share it?
@sauron They haven't provided an apk in the release section because its not finished yet. Its unlikely anyone will have a usable version for a while. Most development work is currently going into server and infrastructure support. If you want to support the development I'd recommend donating at https://www.buymeacoffee.com/kbin.
I ask that people modmail subreddits that have privated in protest (you can see which ones here: https://reddark.untone.uk/) and ask they put a message about kbin migration into their about section so users trying to see those subs will come here and start communities. It will help grow kbin as well as contribute to the protest....
